Superman: Legacy

Thing is Superman Returns and Man of Steel really didn't do too well at the box office. MoS was quite far removed from what people expected from a Superman movie and it didn't hit the spot with a lot of people.

Returns had a hard job as it fitted too closely with the Reeve films and have it ignore 3 & 4 and follow on from 2. So Routh had a tough job of having to try to live up to the standard set by Reeve.

So this new rebooted DCU headed up by James Gunn also has a lot of work to do, it needs to bring back fans that have loved Superman for a long time and also start to build a world and get people on board for the future projects.

I do think its gone in the right direction but will the cinema going public enjoy it? From early reports it does seem to have gone done well with fans and also early press/media previews have good things to say about it.

You could say the same for Batman Begins, and look what it spawned, TDK1/2 - both near 10/10 perfect Batman, on such a believable and serious level that we always wanted, and then the grittier one after that was also great in it's own way.

It's crazy though that as with Batman Begins that MOS/SR didn't do well given the awesome casting and how well done they were, I mean Man Of Steel was literally Batman Begins for Superman, i.e. a perfect Nolan version of something we love.
Pair that with Amy Adams being spot on, Michael Shannon who never disappoints, Russell Crowe, and then pairing it with Nolan and Snyder!

I think Henry did very well, but I really liked Brandon Routh's portrail of Clark - as if you expect Henry to be very good, as he usually is, but I think Brandon was perfect for his role too, as was Kevin Spicy - I genuinely would have happily watched more with Routh!

Yeah it sounds very hit or miss doesn't it.

I wonder if the cinema will just be full of purist trolls or easily pleased people say it's the best one yet because it's the newest - you know how that can go :cry:

I really did enjoy Routh's take and gutted SR never got a sequel. However Routh did get to reprise his role in the Arrowverse Cris storyline as the Kingdom Come Superman.

I think that as good as Henry was it taking the Superman character in a mark darker and gritter version put off many as Superman traditionally has been a lot lighter in tone.

It was a big gamble which ultimately didn't work. As an example we never really got to see Henry in the Clark persona much at all and when we did he was basically just the same person but with glasses. He didn't have the usual bumbling and clumsy Clark which is a big part of his 'disguise'.

I think James Gunn seems to have a better understanding of the world of DC, his Suicide Squad felt a lot more on point compared to the previous film and his Peacemaker show has been doing well, so much so that he is including it in this new DCU.

Of his previous movies and screenplays he gets a lot of the source material and what works. He wrote 2002s Scooby Doo movie and its sequel. Yes financially some films flopped but weren't actually terrible, Slither and Super were actually decent from certain aspects too.

To be fair the only negativity I see online is from those fixated on Cavill and MoS with those being their only exposure to Superman and they can't get on board with humour in the new movie when a lot of content of it has been part of the comics for a very long time.

So it will be interesting to see how this film does. Marketing can only do so much for a movie. Audiences have to get behind it and word of mouth will do so much more.

Yeah same mate, he really deserved it, I think I actually even prefer him over Henry, although Henry was awesome - but you expect that, whereas Routh, I'd never seen/heard of and he knocked it out the park! A sequel would have been great!

I know what you mean but I think that's just to ignorance of cashing in and making it child friendly for more profits - as you say MOS was the true proper story with all the dark bits that are usually glossed over when it's all smiles and heroes. That's why bits of Batman V Superman were actually good in places IMHO.

Yeah that's true Henry was just slick and confident all the time, Routh definitely portrayed it better overall.

Haha yeah the stoner movies that got him into loads of trouble lol I thought I recognised that name!

Yeah, I'll definitely watch it regardless and see, my moneys on it wont beat MOS/SR though ;) Place your bets, haha!

Gunn was these conditions SS movie, which i personally liked a whole lot more than the first one.

The extended BvS definitely makes for a better watch. As much as I do enjoy parts of it, the film was still a bit of a letdown. Doing the death of Superman as your second movie featuring the character was a bit of a misstep. Should have been a build up and maybe happen in a 3rd MoS movie.

I can certainly see where Gunn has got a lot of his inspiration from for this new film. He posted a load of pictures on Instagram citing his main influences for the story.

Yeah I enjoyed the extended version the second time round, bar the Tesco value CGI.
Yep, bit rushed with barely any build up!

Interesting, we shall see how it pans out then mate, hopefully it's a pleasant surprise like The Batman, and Joker was.
 
I just hope they don't bugger it up. Been so many problems with previous reiterations. Man of Steel was far from perfect but still enjoyed it.

I'm looking forward to it. I've seen Reeve, Routh, Cavill (I prefer Cavill's Superman) so I think the reboot will be interesting.

I'm a little surprised at the anger shown towards Lois in the trailer, so maybe not all "sweetness and light". We'll see.

Prefer Amy Adams in that regard although I am biased in this regard as I knew a doctor that was a virtual twin of them, so bonus points there. Would optionally take Erica Durance as alternative for next best. Others is not what I'd call eye candy in the same fashion.
 
Now the gunns are in videos on twitter saying the movie is about how we treat immigrants, and not comic book characters apparently. :o

Isn't that always what it is at its core? An alien living among us. MoS treated him like a God. Lex always wants to harm or kill him.

Its really not a big deal. Many comic books have messeges in them or as part of tge key plots. X-Men is all about bigotry and hatred of a minority that is different to you. Think about when these characters were created.
