Does something need to be done about dogs?

Getting a dog for security is madness. The amount of effort to train that dog and generally look after it is huge. You don't get a pet dog for security unless you are an absolute oik who deals with the wrong sort all the time.

All I would like from dog owners is for them to pick up their dogs crap. Part of that includes actually looking at your dog and knowing when its ********. The number of people who don't pay any attention to what their dog is doing and just let it off the lead in a park and let it get on with it is amazing.

I was cycling through the park the other day and 3 dog walkers just had their dogs either off the lead or their lead was just dragging on the floor behind the dog. Had to slow to a crawl as a passed the dog and none of them batted an eyelid. Others just have their dogs on a lead wandering all over both sides of the path and again, not a care in the world when their dog is getting in the way or potentially going to cause an accident.

Well, bear in mind a lot of people probably dont realise it until after they have purchased the dog, and hence the number of poorly trained dogs out there.

Someone needs to work out the CO2 cost of all these dogs and their associated paraphernalia, the toys, food, all the logistics of shipping it everywhere.

Then people need to make the eco argument for people to stop with it. They are a frivolous luxury item to most people except those used as working dogs, guide dogs, sheep dogs, gun dogs, etc etc.
We've traded our kid carbon credits for a dog. It's all fine.

My neighbour has 5 Rottweilers. There was originally 2, then they had 5 puppies, they sold two, so currently there are the 5. I think its 4 females and 1 male. The male they have to babysit when it is outside because it will go mental at the slightest noise. I don't really speak to them so that's all I know, other than the woman is clearly the one in charge and is clearly one of those people who thinks having a big dog is important. Their previous dog was a massive Alsatian called "Diesel", so you get the idea. The bloke is actually scared of them. One of these days you will see in the news "Man savaged by pack of Rottweilers in own home whilst spouse looked on". Literally last weekend their next door neighbours kids were playing in their garden and a ball got thrown over the fence. I heard the mum say "Can we have out ball back please", and the guy says "You try getting a ball off four Rottweilers". The 5th one was kept inside at the for the reason explained above.

Why do you think you have more right of way than the dog owner and it's dog on paths? I mean I'm a cyclist myself and I nearly always move my dog out the way when I see a cyclist coming. But as a cyclist I tend to slow down/stop or circumnavigate dogs off the lead on the embackment. I just think it's a give and take scenario.

Most dogs absolutely need to be walked off the lead, because they need far more exercise than their owner does in 99% of cases.

As for leading to accidents, read the high way code, road going vehicles should always give way to pedestrians and animals at all times

For added info, as far as I know, the Rottweilers I mention above have never once left the confines of their back garden. They are never walked anywhere as I am pretty sure the bloke knows they would attack someone, and would probably try to kill any small dog they came across. So not much life for a dog to be kept cooped up so the woman can go "look at my big dogs (that never leave the house/garden)". Not a fan as you can probably work out.

Public parks should be renamed Dog Exercise Area because thats what they are.

FYI Rottweilers can be very friendly dogs to both family and strangers.

The Rottweilers you're talking about are being neglected/abused

I remember once my family had a rottweiler cross, people were scared of her because of her looks and 1 adult told her relative of child age 'stay away from that dangerous dog', to which the child replied 'that's not a dangerous dog, it's a Lucy (the dog's name)'. Everyone who knew Lucy loved her.

When I was a kid on holiday once made friends with another kid and they had an Alsatian called Diesel - absolutely massive dog that seemed to spend the entire week just sprawled the whole width of the front bench seat of their static caravan. I was pretty intimidated at first but it just didn't even care I was there - was kind of funny it was on holiday and it knew it.

Next up in GD "Does something need to be done about cyclists?"

Horrible, happy things cluttering up our green spaces. Dogs as well

Because its a shared use path with a side for walkers and a side for cyclists. Its also going through a park with massive fields for dogs to run in. So letting your dog off the lead on shared use paths and not bothering to control it or do anything is not "give and take". Most reasonable people who own dogs don't think they take priority over everyone else and have some consideration for others.

As for the highway code hierarchy, that doesn't mean that you can do whatever you want because you're at the bottom. Most people would consider it being a ***** if I walked down the middle of the road because I can.

As a cyclist you just have to accept if riding through parks etc you will have to slow down and you will have dogs running about. Its not ideal but its not going to change.
