I currently have an AM4 3600 with a 1660Ti, though I have just bought an RX 9060XT 16GB.

If I were to upgrade to AM5 what would be a good CPU to go for.

As some background, I tend to buy mid-range, ‘best bang for the buck’ components. I do 1080P gaming though if I were to ever replace my monitor I would be tempted to get 1440P.

The 7600/7600X is a good shout, as are the 7400F, 7500F and 7600X3D chips.
The 9600/9600X is also another option to add to the mix which is decently priced.

Depending on the model, some of them may require a cooler to be bought separately.

Me personally, I'd probably favour something like the 7600X3D, though this might be more than you ideally wish to spend. It's still a great VFM processor, however.
I'd check out benchmarks first and see the differences. :)

Just had a thought, as you are on AM4, have you considered dropping in something like a 5700X3D or, if you can find one, a 5800X3D?
That would save buying a new motherboard and memory.

I do like that idea. But on a thread where I was exploring what GPU to get, I was originally just thinking of a GPU-only upgrade, people suggested that I change my CPU, some suggestion a 5xxx and other saying I should sell my AM4 stuff and move to AM5.

I quite understand what you mean. I have similar thoughts about whether to stay with AM4 and simply drop in a 5950X, or move to AM5 and go for one of the 9000 series chips. I'm still not entirely sure. :D

I suppose what you could do is to see if/how much the new GPU is hamstrung by, game depending, and then take it from there. In the meantime, watch as many reviews and benchmarks as you can to form more of an idea.
I'm poor at maths, but I suppose what you need to do is compare the cost versus the performance gain. i.e., the 5700X3D is around £210 vs the difference in cost/performance of XYZ motherboard + ram + AM5 7600, or whatever.

I'm getting a new GPU quite soon, and that's probably what I'll be doing, though I do expect the new card to be held back at least somewhat by my CPU.

That is definitely my plan, install the new GPU and see how it goes.

On the one hand, it does seem silly spending money to stay on AM4 but then again I have never had much luck selling second hand.

Can anyone recommend a good tool for displaying FPS, utilisation, temps etc. when playing a game. I’d prefer seeing performance in real world use rather than running benchmarks.

I’ve got MSI Afterburner working, the only thing that has me stumped is the frame rate display.

I’ve select frame rate, average frame rate and 1% frame rate for on screen display, but when it runs it just shows the frame rate.

its news to me that there is only £20 difference between a 7600x and 9600x

i would have expected more of a gap

I'd say it's worth it at that point too, even for gaming.

The difference in FPS on average between the two is around 5%, however there is the odd title that can see as much as 20-30% uplift such as Assetto Corsa. Obviously for other workloads there's some nice uplift there to boot, as long as you're willing to import I'd say the only 7000 series chip still worth buying specifically for gaming, is the 7600X3D which is a very strong offering for under £280.
