Superman: Legacy

Would have loved to watch a Batfleck movie. It's a pity I reckon he would have been awesome. One of my favourite scenes was this.

By whom? It's rubbish.

Aside from the score, great Hans Zimmer score.
Didn't even rate the score, not that it's very memorable. I like Henry Cavill as Superman but I thought the CGI was **** and found the rest of the film to be decidedly average and if it's not the John Williams score, I'm out.

Yeah, my local is the same. Not many pre-bookings for it though.

Looking to see what’s on at the cinema this weekend and my local Vue has an astonishing 20 showings of this on the Saturday

Yer, stark contrast to Jurassic World Rebirth last week where a few days out, you couldn't get a seat despite showings every half hour. Even F1 hadn't been that easy to get a decent seat until last couple days.

Looks like it could be a disappointing box office opening.

Critics haven't liked Superman since the 1970s film.

Every subsequent Superman film has faced huge critiques, even Man of Steel.

Slightly paraphrasing from some of the reviews post Superman II.

*Slow and charming is boring and needs more action,
*Lex as sole villain then not enough villain
*Multiple villains then too many villians,
*Comic books brought to life makes it unrealistic,
*Singular Comic book based is always the wrong comic book no matter which genre / no. picked,
*No batman featured then having no batman is a problem,
*Batman included then its the wrong Batman,
*Superman turns up then its the wrong Superman, wrong suit, wrong build (too slim, too jacked)
*More Clark then not enough Superman
*More Superman then not enough Clark
*No backstory then not enough origin
*Origin then too much origin as been done before

DC can never win though.

Man of Steel was hated at the time yet heralded as brilliant now. Even Superman Returns is looked back on fondly.

Batman has it as bad as Superman. Heck the controversy over Tim Burton and Keaton went on for years as the DCU gear shifted from the cheesy DC TV shows.
You know it could just be down to the fact the Superman films are just not particularly good? Man of Steel is bog standard, it’s not amazing nor is it atrocious.

A film could be stuffed full with villains, have more Clark, have more Superman, but if it’s not good, then it’s not good. They’re just not great films and I’m not surprised that this appears to not be meeting people’s expectations.

Me and some friends won preview tickets so just back.
This was very poor IMO. Now I loved the actor and the overall " tone" of this Superman, less moody etc. But the overall story was a complete mess, mostly CGI over screen slop and really very boring fight scenes.
Theirs was also no real hero "Super man moment". The music was bad of didnt convey much emotion in scenes. And the sound didnt really feel weighty enough to what was happnening on screen. The dog is massivly overused as a comedy gimmick etc. As is the Lois character, daft insertion into the main sotry to be where she needs to be again.
Overall massivly dissappointed.

Just as I predicted cheap CGI-fest wise then :(

I actually sorta agree with this, I think half the issue with Superman is that it's hard to fit the duality he deals with into a movie. It works with Batman by and large because it's ultimately less deep and more visceral, you can boil his life as Bruce Wayne down to trauma driven hedonism intended to present a false face to the world which is easily done by his massive wealth. Attend a party or two, act like how anyone expects a super rich bachelor to act, pop out the odd press release on what his company is doing.

For me Superman works best as a tv show, Smallville was excellent for its time and I legitimately enjoyed (surprisingly given it was a CW show) Superman and Lois, you got to explore both sides of the character because there was enough time to do so. Hell, even Lois and Clark from the 90's was a lot of fun and quite endearing for its time.

I enjoyed the Reeves movies but I always found them so-so, Brandon Routh's outing wasn't terrible but it started in the middle of nowhere and there never felt like there was enough time to explore everything. Cavill was excellent in Man of Steel, I enjoyed the darker feel to the story and the more violent nature of things, but there just wasn't enough time to really get a feel for Clark Kent.

Offt Smallville was amazing, I never finished it :( I remember Kelly Brook in that bath though ;)

I personally really like both Superman Returns and Man Of Steel, for their own takes on Superman. I mean Man Of Steel was basically TDK or Batman Begins for Superman, Nolan spec, with a brilliant cast, I couldn't fault it? Really liked Routh's take too in Returns, especially at the time just after Batman Begins, I felt like we were being spoilt. But hey ho. Unpopular opinion I guess.

Routh's Superman was really Reeve's Superman though as it was a sequel to Superman 2. Following on from his time with Lois at the fortress and then he left Earth for 5 years.

Either way it worked and he pulled it off well considering he isn't Reeve. So it was a win for me.

Brandon R really deserved a more coherent movie, he did a fantastic job in the role much like Cavill, albeit for different reasons.

I think trying to avoid an "origin" story in this regard was a poor choice on behalf of the studio, he'd have nailed it if done right and had genuine enthusiasm for the role.

Which was ultimately confusing and messy, totally different actors and decades between the movies, coupled with the fact there was a third Reeve movie.

.
Fair enough :)
I think both, Routh or Cavill would nail an origins story :)
This new one seems to be exactly what I predicted from the start, a budget spec CGI-fest with no substance, that we didn't need nor did we request. Shame.

I watched it again recently, its still a decent movie and Routh was good in it. Shame it didn't do well enough to get a sequel. Though he got another shot in the Crisis story on The Flash tv show as Kingdom Come Superman.
I would have honestly loved a sequel. When Man Of Steel was rumoured, I was hoping it was Routh's sequel. Glad we still got what we got on both counts though.

My goodness thats embarrassing!

That is no longer Superman's saying. He denounced his US citizenship in the comics back in 2011. Here is a quote

I'm tired of having my actions construed as instruments of U.S. policy. 'Truth, Justice and the American Way' — it's not enough anymore. The world's too small.

Also hasn't really been used much since the 90s.

Who would read modern ruined versions of the comic though, in this day and age they're just poisoned to suit a modern BS narrative.
