Superman: Legacy

You can in some cinemas here. Vue in Glasgow has a bar and you can buy drinks to take in to the screens.

Yer you can in the Odeons down here, they serve in plastic glasses though.

Loved the dog Krypto

I thought he looked pretty realistic, maybe not quite as polished as some of the Marvel offerings historically but no where near as dire as some reporting so either milage may vary with screens or people are watching pirated versions already.

Just got back - wow that’s a ‘busy’ film… there’s a lot to ‘mentally unpack’ with that one…! :p

Overall I liked it more than I expected, coming from someone that is well and truly ‘done’ with superhero films. The good outweighed the bad, but there are several aspects that weighed it down quite heavily.

I’ll mix it up and go with the bad first…

That dog. Put that ****ing dog down. I have no idea what the appeal of this is supposed to be - like, I suppose it’s aimed at people who like TikTok shorts of animals… or something? Is this film really trying to entertain me by just showing me a dog being a dog? Ugh. If you’re the type to roll your eyes when people give too much attention to pets when they are in the room, this film is just like that - it’ll make you want to claw your eyes out at points. It was twice the amount of dog exposure that the film needed, and I’m being generous.

The other thing that sapped away from some of the ‘fun’ was the reference to tiring modern day-isms such as social media and influencers. It just reminded me, set alongside the inexplicable audience laughter at the dog scenes (?!), that people are generally a bunch of morons.

OTHER THAN THAT… it’s alright! The tone is generally light as opposed to ‘brooding’, which extends to the aesthetic choices and character design - not taken too seriously. It’s almost the opposite tone of Nolan’s Batman films and, right now at this moment in time (after many years of trying to recapture the ‘drama’ and failing), that’s a plus for me.

The cast are likeable and well balanced. Lex is particularly good IMO, adding a bit of intensity where needed. I quite liked the supporting superheroes, and minor plus point for the ‘spin’ on the ‘origin story’, too… although I wasn’t actually too keen on the take with the ‘Earth parents’.

Sitting somewhere between the good and bad: Although the film succeeds when it is fun, camp, bright, ernest and goofy, it’s hit and miss when it tries to be funny. There were a few decent laughs, but there were quite a few misses as well - that’s beyond the dog scenes. I feel this aspect could have been polished a bit and some might criticise it for it.

So yeah, a mixed bag with a LOT going on. Ultimately, the ‘cheerful and we know it’ approach was a good call, as opposed to ‘brooding yet superficial’ which feels a bit dated at this point.

If I take what I like and leave what I don’t, I’d give it 7/10. I can see some people really liking it and some people hating it… and even if it’s not great, I’m still all for a film that takes some risk.

Nice honest review that mate.
Referencing things like influencers can GTFO. They're nobodies, leading gullible insecure people to waste their money and make the influencer rich, plain and simple!

I liked that they've cast him as Lex, I quite like him in many things that he's done.

I will still wait till it's streaming though ;) :P

At least you didn't have to use that cyanide pill after all mate

Anybody remember superman returns 2006? Nope me neither.

Likewise in a year this will have evaporated with no cultural impact.

Peacemaker only thing left for DC live action.

Thanks, I loved Krypto

Haha don’t take me seriously, I was playing up my super grouchy side for comedic effect :D

It wasn’t so much that I hated Krypto himself, he was fun at times, but I did dislike the amount of screen time and ‘humour’ that was put on him… it was just obnoxious, just like when adults are paying way too much attention to their dogs in real life, and then other adults encourage it!! Does my head in :o

I mean, I was looking at dog breeds that I’d be interested in only earlier today, but, what can I say, I’m a cat lover at heart :p

It has been the best Superman film since Superman II. Shame Brandon Routh never got another go at it (other than the Arrowverse crossover).

As for the new one, add me to the list of 'when it's on streaming'.

You'll maybe not like the Supergirl movie when its out as Krypto is a big part of that story, unless they change it up a bit.

Also you'll like that there is a super cat too. Streaky is its name :D wonder if he'll show up in this world at something along with the super horse;) 60s Superman comics were on another level.
