Golf Thread

It has been a while since I last posted, but the golf has been a bit mixed over the last couple of years - got down to 5.0 but a recurrence of my back problems has seen it creep back up to 5.6 currently but I expect it to go up a bit further still as I have got a couple of low differentials dropping off in the next couple of rounds (a 2.5 and a 3.4)

This year has been mixed with some good ball striking but just not able to score for some reason, although I have had some good results in our league team fixtures playing in the scratch section this year. The worst result was when I ended up playing someone off +2 and he buried me on the 13th (at his home course) with a 25ft putt for yet another birdie in that round which I think had him -3 for the holes we played

Managed to get a half this week and my opponent gave me a compliment saying it was the hardest match he had played all year and that I was a nightmare to play against - probably something to do with how well I scrambled and putted whenever I got out of position to either save a hole, or in some cases to win them

Range practice has been going well and it definitely helps having Trackman and being able to play courses rather than just hitting balls, so I just need to transfer that to the course as I don't quite feel I have got the same confidence but it is getting there
Good to hear it's going well for you dude, can't wait to play you again!

Had a mini golf break with some of my mates this week, went down to St Mellion, played the Nicklaus first, 2nd time I've played it and loved it! It's a monster. Next day played the Kernow in the morning then in the afternoon headed up to the Ashbury. Played 4 rounds there 2nd day we played the signature course Kigsbere, was really nice and a real challenge as there are so many blind shots. Sadly my game wasn't up to my normal levels due to 29c temps and zero wind. Worst of all the horse flies were out in abundance. Never seen so many, must have been bitten 20-30 times and killed 100 plus! We all had a shot routine of practice swing, hit the flies away, hit the ball then slap the flies off. Funnily enough every group you saw was doing the same thing it was rather funny but irritating at the same time.

Played twice over the weekend - Friday afternoon and Saturday.

Played well on the Friday, at our course's sister course - Aldwickbury. Tidy through the front, was 1 over through 7, but then lost a ball on the 8th, walked off with a double, then bogeyed 9 to leave me 4 over. Finished with an 85 after a couple of messy holes.

Went out Saturday morning, still feeling some fatigue from Friday and it showed - couple of triple bogies on the card! All went a bit wrong on the back 9, fatigue kicking in - but came in with a 91, managed to scramble to eliminate some bad scores.

Lesson learned, 2 days on the bounce in 30+ degree weather does not lead to good golf!

Out later today, match against a mate, giving him 5 shots

Played at Shrivenham yesterday in the society I play with, overall an ok day, nothing special but some really good shots and some less good :p Got 32 points, the society keeps it's own handicaps and it's ~3 less than my EG one after a stunning victory last time out so it feels 'ok' as a score but just as seems far too common just a little bit too scruffy in places throwing away good looks at birdies/pars into bogeys and doubles.

Looking back at booyaka posting the other day and saying 24/25c was roasting hot, it was 30+ yesterday  which was just too much, even by half way we were all walking along the edge of the hole to try and stay in shade as much as possible etc

In other news I just booked some more of the NCG Top 100 tour events, it was kinda in the plan to do so (actually wanted to do Burnham and Berrow but left it too late for that one) after the last events even though the vouchers are a bit awkward it was a good day out and realistically I never expected to win anything. Anyway I booked the Frilford Heath and Pyle & Kenfig events which are both ~1.5-2 hour drives so doable in a day then also booked the "Ayrshire Autumn Package" which is in September playing Kilmarnock Barassie, Dundonald Links and Prestwick St. Nicholas, bit pricey but looking forward to it and it'll be my first time playing in Scotland.

I think the plan will be to drive up to <somewhere> on Saturday 20th (got an even at my club so be after doing that), maybe play golf at the <somewhere> on Sunday AM before driving the rest of the way up to Ayrshire. Might also add some golf on the Thursday/Friday before heading down, might as well make a holiday of it :p

Anyone got any thoughts/reccomendations on the '<somewhere>' for golf, ideally not too expensive but 'decent'? FWIW the route will be basically up the M5 from the M4/M5 area with just past Manchester being around the halfway point.

Also, @booyaka am I right in that you live somewhere up near Ayr/Troon? Any reccomendations on places to play at the end of the week and/or places to stay etc?

Indeed stay in Prestwick

3 great courses there -

Dundonald is excellent - I love it, big ballpark, huge greens but wide enough to be not brutally punishing. High quality golf course - Ladies Scottish Open 24-27th so course should be in stunning condition.
Barrasie - Another quality golf course (literally next to Dundonald) - Usually in stunning condition - very very nice place to golf
St Nics - 5 minutes from my house - nice course, not quite at the level of the other 2, but very enjoyable and great views with some interesting holes for sure.

Let me know your dates/times outside of these and I'll happily get you a game on my course as a visitor at Belleisle if I can make it along as well.

You have 5 "council" courses which are fairly cheap but decent to play to add on - in Ayr - Belleisle (my home course), Seafield then in Troon - Lochgreen / Darley and Fullarton. Belleisle, Lochgreen, Darley are the best of those - Shouldn't cost more than about £40/50 but half that price if I book you on. Like I say - give me a shout and we can sort something out.

I'll let you know some food places based on where your staying.

Sounds good, thanks for the info :) I didn't realise about the Ladies Scottish Open, oddly this will be the second time I've played a course a day before a Ladies Pro event, last time was out in Marrakech at the end of 2023 when I played a course the day before part of the LET Q School, the course that day was tough! So should be interesting :)

As for dates/times for other rounds so I'll be driving the last 'bit' depending on my overnight stay on Sunday 21st and that may actually be the best time really? If I don't do a round <somewhere> where my stop is then I could get there for mid-morning onwards ish? Otherwise I think I'll have to leave Friday afternoon/evening but need to check that, and assuming that Thursday/Friday morning generally don't work great with work :p

....
Great tee shot up 9, pulled 2nd in to the bunker - under the lip.... couldn't get it out or move it at all... Took 4 to get it out - tripled bogie...

Normally solid out the sand but literally had no shot - nothing even sideways or backwards.
...
Shame you didn't think to take a drop :(

Strange one yesterday, just out by myself off the yellows to give myself a break. Again racked up a big score (7) at the first. Then played OK before going on a run of six straight pars from the 6th through to the 11th. Don't think I've ever had such a streak before now, ended by a bit of an unlucky bogey on the 12th. At which point I caught up to a couple of other members who were out having a social game. They invited me to join them at which point my game immediately went downhill

Out again last night, some matchplay against a couple of mates - win the hole, 3 points, half the hole, 1 point. Worked well, The winner with 17 points to the other 2's 14 points.

Played pretty well, but unfortunately some shanks crept in  I was standing over the ball on the 17th, aware I was only 9 over par, only needed 2 pars to break 80 (par 70 course). Of course I shanked it into a tree . More on the 18th, ended up with an 83 - a little disappointing but it's all progress! Back to practicing..

Yesterday afternoon I got a text that there was a space available at the NCG Top 100 Tour event at Burnham & Berrow which I was on the waitlist for, so of course first thing this morning I checked my client was ok with me sodding off and replied yes :p

Kinda not sure how to rate the course as it utterly kicked my behind today  Probably a pretty hard course generally but add in some 40mph winds and it was just brutal. Didn't help that my putting was pretty terrible, 40 putts total, they were fast but I also just wasn't getting the reads at all.

Off the tee was generally ok though, so that's something :p

Ah, the difference a day makes... Probably course and weather too tbh :p

Back at my local for a 9-hole roll up, didn't start great with a triple on the first then double'd the second with an annoying slight pull on my second leading to OB and the penalty for that. But then I went on a run of 5 pars in a row, not even striking the ball that well but just getting it in the hole, including some good putts. Did finish on 2 bogeys for +7 total but still pretty happy with that. 14 putts too, always take that :)

Gone from being a range demon to complete noob. I can strike everything well on course but the range makes my irons turn to pool noodles.

Shame grass ranges are so rare here

Beaten last night in match play comp - quarter final stage. (front tees) - Stutt Cup which I won last year.

Simply no answer to opponents automatic driver  - Never missed a fairway all night.

He's been a scratch/1/2 handicapper all his life - drifted up to 4.4 now as he ages a bit and distance falls off a touch but with solid/baked out fairways - ball is rolling out a lot for him and he was just middle of greens/2 putts all night.

Think he was level par for 15 holes with a couple of gimmies in there - I lost 4&3.

Shows big time that distance ain't it out amateur / club level. Just ground me down with consistency

Tell me about it, mentioned a bit ago I just don't seem to be able to hit decently off a mat anymore...

My local used to have a grass range but it got chewed up with little to no maintenance so they ended up putting mats down on it and now are looking to build a new range with all covered bays/toptracer etc, I get it financially but a nice and well maintained grass range would be so nice to have.

I imagine they might exist in some of the nice courses round me for members but yeah public ones aren't feasible I guess. I am inching more and more towards a Spornia net and launch monitor in my garden but I can't quite overcome being out in my garden in my terrace house with everyone able to see :D

Scratch 78 this morning (net 71)

Strange one again - +5 thru 6 holes.... then +2 next 12 including 2 birdies (38/39 for the year)

Was in 6 bunkers as well... Not sure what to make of my game at the moment...

Closest for a long time on a hole in 1... Hit a lovely high cut on 17th (8 iron) - landed a foot from the flag and hit the pin... Bounced away to about 3ft. Holed for a nice 2.

I don't know why. Maybe I'm just a huge grump but winning sportsmen aka Scheffler picking up their kids and carting them around after winning, really annoys me.

It started about 10 years ago in Football. Ruins the atmosphere for me, watching my favourite sports turn into a cresh.
