Mountain Biking

This popped up on my FB feed today - looks like a lot of time, effort and money went into this but ultimately seized by the police

Should have put deliveroo stickers on it. Would have been fine.

What are peoples thoughts on the Cotic Jeht? I'm flip flopping around from chosen bikes and nearly bought a Jeffsy last week when they were on offer but missed the sale. I'm torn between an Bird Aether 9, Whyte T140 and the Jeht. The Jeht is more than I'd want to spend ideally, but annoyingly I prefer it to the others and I can also get it in a colour I like. I just want one bike to replace my Pitch, which although old, does everything I want from easy rides with the missus to big natural stuff in the Peak and Lakes.

Haha, well my budget keeps going up the more I look at things! I was originally looking up to £2k, then that stretched to 3, now I'm eyeing up things more than that. If it lasts me another 15 years or so like my current bike has, I'm not too bothered.

Friends cotic rusted through, he got a frame replacement mind you. I just don't really see the benefits of steel really.

You should plan to spend some time on a Cotic before buying one - they ride very differently from the other bikes you are mentioning and you might not appreciate their quirks.

FWIW you'll find that YT are like DFS - there's always a sale. You just need to wait for the model you want to come up.

Unfortunately they haven't had a demo day near me recently, but I'm over in the Peak quite often so was going to stop by one day to take one out. I wasn't dead set on the YT either, it's just a good deal at the time as it would have been a much better bike for less that I'd planned on spending. I'd rather get a British brand if I can, but equally I'm not in a particular rush to buy anything. I'm just aware that parts are harder to get for my old bike and after breaking my mech and having to pay over the odds for a second hand one, it's time to think about changing.

Ouch, didn't even consider the rust aspect!

Sadly whilst their British owned, there isn't much british about many British mtbs.

The only thing British about cotic is the steel, and that isn't British it's just regarded as such because it's rolled in the UK.

I'd love a British built bike, but there's a lot of sacrifices to own one.

I think even cotic are made in tawain now? I believe starling frames are fully built in the UK, but the price very much reflects this.

I bet it's impossible to get one where everything is UK traceable.
Even Atherton get there carbon from Australia I think some fancy yacht maker. Can't imagine the Titanium powder is made in the UK either.

Cotic definitely did have a run of UK-manufactured frames at one point during the post-Covid boom, but I believe their frames are made from a mix of tubes sourced from in and outside of the UK. Only some of their frames are made completely outside of the UK. Five Land do a lot of their stuff now, as Cy wanted to move production back to the UK as much as possible.

Starling front triangles are made from UK steel, rears are made in Taiwan for a lot of their range.

I bet it's impossible to get one where everything is UK traceable.

Hope are pretty close, the HB916 is made from mostly UK-sourced carbon, using UK-manufactured moulds and hand-laid by the folks in Barnoldswick.

Plenty of other boutique frame builders making steel bikes, but while some of the tubes are drawn in the UK there is not a lot of choice for the type of tubes you would usually want to use.

Sadly so. About the best you'll get is designed by a British engineer.

Shame really.

it is a shame because if they spent time attending engineering design show or Advanced engineering for example they would be able to find companies here in the UK that can do exactly that but I’m sure there is some technical detail that is deterring businesses like Atherton from doing that.

Good job I missed out on that YT sale the other week as they've just gone into administration!
Another one.. Such a shame really as they had a superb line-up!

On another note, Bosch Gen5 update with 750w/100nm is wild. Its useable and strong in delivery. Loads of fun. Ill turn it down in a week or two but for the time being I wont be using uplift service as it really just isnt needed.

Looks like many were not so lucky. People have paid and have no bike. Will have to speak to payment providers or hope administrators keep business running and can honour orders.

Yeh, could be a nightmare for some people. No money and no bike. Hopefully they can just do a charge back on credit cards, but still a lot of faffing about. Bit scummy to have a sale knowing this might happen.

It looks like it’s “self administration” where by they’re restructuring internally and looking for external investors. Hopefully this allows the business to run as normal until such a time as it’s either relaunched or dissolved.

FR541 on Hope5s with Kryptotal front and Argotal rear. I’ve got a cushcore ready and waiting just incase I decide to use it but I think these are about as bomb proof as you can get.

Absolute weapon of a bike with the power update and EMTB+ mode. 100nm and 750w with everything else bumped up to max with over run. This thing absolutely trucks.

Fitted the tubeless valves and went tubeless on the Scout whilst I was messing around with the one77. I’ve also added the oneup v2 dropper with lever on to this bike as well as deity grips and carbon chrome bars with a Nukeproof Stem in silver and some silver dress kit for it. A very free rolling hard tail with decent enough grip on those “wicked will” tyres to do most trail type riding than you would usually use an XC for or similar. So glad I kept it.
