Dashcams!

Nextbase is the market leader, so maybe look at their basic models?

Thanks @radderfire

I'm reading up on the Nextbase Piqo2k which looks perfect actually. And direct from Nextbase at the moment they are really cheap.

I can download the Nextbase software to my PC, and don't have to worry about the vagaries of any App.

One thing does concern me, in that the reviews state that you cannot make out a numberplate clearly beyond about a car length in front. That seems very inefficient for a 1440p camera these days. My 10 year old RoadHawk at 1080p was better than that.

Does anyone have any experience of the Piqo2k? TIA.

Ok silly question time.

It looks like our 8 year old Thinkware F770 is starting to fail (some weird intermittent issues with the video*).

What I'm wondering is, does anyone know if the rear camera module is compatible with other thinkware models?
It looks like it might be but I'm finding it hard to actually see an answer.

If it is I might just buy a new thinkware front unit rather than front and back.

*It looks like the encoder chip is dying as both front and rear camera videos are sometimes pixelated or missing the blue channel (makes them look like something for a sci-fi movie).

Not sure, but i know the blackvues aren't

I dont think there's are either. But don't quote me on that

I've had a bit of a think, and I'm just going to buy a new camera with front and rear:)

Anyone got the Thinkware Q850?
It looks like it'll do what I want, and isn't too horrendous on the price (£270 with rear camera), and should be a reasonable upgrade from the current one.

I'll try and have another look:)

From what I can tell the rear camera module definitely worked with several models of the same sort of generation as the main camera, and some of their new rear camera modules work with multiple main units (and look identical), so I think i'm going to have use bing* and see if I can find a compatibility chart that actually covers not just the current models ;)

*I'm finding bing better than google at some searches these days, which still feels odd.

I had a Thinkware U1000 Plus installed a week or so ago and it's a bit of a mixed bag.

Image quality from both cameras is very good, even in low light. What's not so good is the 10 second gap in recording between clips and the inconsistent clip length. Most clips are 1 minute long but I've got loads that vary between 10 seconds and a minute. The gap is a problem though, it's happening every single time. I've got a support ticket open with them so I'll see what they say. Firmware is up to date but I'm not using their branded SD card so I expect they'll want me to try that.

I had some issues with SD cards in my Thinkware (my Blackvue was even more of pain). If you haven't tried it already, use the branded card to see if the issue persists. If it works fine, check out various threads by owners as they usually recommend a card that works well.

My 8 or 9 year old thinkware F770 also has a gap missing between the recordings
I was always expecting a firmware upgrade to be released to fix this

For some reason the camera was saving the 10 second clips to the event recording folder. The varying clip length was also down to event recording, it was saving the remainder of the 1 minute clips into there.

With the event recording disabled it seems fine now.

Thinkware support were useless

Turns out the branded card was DOA so it's gone in the bin. The 512Gb Sandisk card is working fine now that I've tweaked the camera settings.

Needed an upgrade to our iiwey (4k front, 1080p rear) system, as the rear camera mount plastic failed and I couldn't find a replacement that works.

After a bit of Google-fu and a few YouTube reviews, I ordered the RedTiger F77 & hardwire kit (£188 in total). 4k front & rear (but will likely run the front at 1440p/60fps), Sony Starvis2 sensors, 128gb on board memory (I'll chuck a 256gb SD card in, too).

Had a bit of a play before it goes into the new car on Tuesday and I'm really happy with the quality for the price.

I fitted the Q1000 over the last couple of days.

Quite happy with it, but I may have made a booboo having spent about an hour carefully marking to fit the rear camera so it's lens is as close to the centre of the rear window as possible.
I then go and check the picture which is great, apart from the fact it's upside down.
****
I'm going to have to remove it over the weekend any refit it, the correct way up.

Go into the settings on the app and revert it

How well can rear cameras see through tinted rear windows?

We have a delivery date on the new van and I want to get a dashcam this time. Motability don't allow hard wiring but it has a dedicated USB port on top of the dash.
