Talk about jumping in at the deep end, silly you! :p

I'm sorry you're injured, but for the first ride in 13 months, something gentle under 90 minutes would have been far more suitable.

Kinda extreme there, even I would have moderated that, and I'm terrible at looking after myself in that way..!

PF, and metatarsalgia can be quite difficult, for me anyway, to fully recover from. Throw in a sprinkle of osteoarthritis and it can be challenging to get the right balance.
 
In my early 40s here and am still trying to be as active as the was in my 20s but do notice that my body physically is not the same.

I have a 2 year old who loves walking outdoors and just being outside so I get plenty of steps in each day which helps to keep fit.

Currently on holiday and the weather is so hot (30°c -33°c) he gets tired quickly and wants me to pick him up rather than sit in his pram. I've now got a pain down my back of my right shoulder blade and neck. Mrs. Says it's my fault but he prefers me carrying him than her or sitting in the pram.

I do stretches about 4-5 times a week this helps immensely for me not to get cramps, aches and pains.

I only ever ride a bike on holiday, so it's been once a year for the last 5 years.

Last year I did over 80km, and got a fine sunburn, too.

In my mid-50s, and now u can't just thrash my body in the way I could a few years back.

My getting old story.
Tweaked my achilles in early 2019, totally my own fault. Had a tight calf so tried doing stretches.
Then went shoppig to local Garden centre , picked up a number of heavy bags of gravel.
On to Tesco and by the time I got my shopping back to car could feel some discomfort.
Get home and I can barely walk. Left Achilles is just wrecked.
Cue 5 months of work on getting my achilles to an ok postion.
Shoud mention that my Right knee did not like this. ( was years before it got back to normal)
Any hoo.
Oct 2019 Eng v Nz at the RWC, For some stupid reason I decided to do a jig after Eng won. (some Alcohol might have been involved)
Ended up in a heap on the lounge floor after my Achilles gave up again.

Now in my mid 60's and realising that walking is really important to keeping everything going.
My Uncle recently died , he walked for roughly an hour a day pretty much all his life. He made it to 100.

I don't think it matters what exercise you do as long as your do something. my neighbour is also my swimming nemesis (said with a smile and she doesn't even know so it's not like it's a mad competition). but my goal is to by the end of the year be able to match her, the thing is .. she is 84. I am 49!.
she said her mum swam till ... 96 I think she said and she died within months of stopping... so my neighbour swims 5 days a week....
I have already decided when I retire I will be upping my swimming from 3 times a day to 5 and plan to get tennis coaching and golf lessons. (as well as crown green bowls ... but that is more about the fact it's at the pub rather than for fitness ;) )

not expecting to be tiger woods or Nadal but if I can have a knockabout that will do me. (who said retirement was boring :D )

I am fortunate as well that my local leisure centre is stupid good value. a fully loaded gym (which I will never use) tennis courts,.squash, table tennis, badminton, pickelball and a proper sized swimming pool all included for £460 a year. also comes with yoga lessons, and other classes all included.

very easy walking this weekend 13k steps fri and sat but had a couple of hours bodyboarding today at Holywell bay ,i do it seriously so its fins to get out back and duck diving so as the swell picked up it was quite a work out ,started missing the weights on a weekend ,see more results this way , muscle grows on rest days ?

I agree you've got to do what works for you and what you enjoy / can best tolerate. And one that you can sustain and doesn't damage your joints.
Weight training is incredibly beneficial as one gets older to maintain bone density.
One of the worst things is when people stop exercising or just move less after an injury or strain. It can be hard if you genuinely cannot do something you were really into. For a few years, I became really into doing burpees, but I gave myself dodgy wrists as a result. It must be so hard for elite athletes. Novak Djokovic reminded me of this recently in an interview. But you got to adapt, ageing and wear and tear are inevitable, it's part of the journey, maaaaan.

im 42 later this year and have congestive heart failure diagnosed a few years back and a few years before that i got told i was autistic plus the usual depression and major anxiety and some ptsd from major bullying and some other condiditons :P

the anxiety was more or less constant and didnt do my heart any good.

things could be a lot worse for you :)

i was cycling regularly 40 odd miles a day on a mountain bike twice a week or smaller 20 mile rides etc, and lifting weights in my room on the days off from cycling.

now im more or less just doing fishing for the last year and im knackered after 6 or 8 hours fishing especially if im using the big beach casters lol just constant fatigue

You are still active though, that's the important part. People think you actively have to train etc for fitness. Doing anything rather than being inactive in front of the tv would be good for you, better for keeping the joints good etc.
 
Did deadlifts on the weekend (after not gyming for 1-2 months), and have tweaked my lower back pretty good. I've had a very similar thing happen about 2 years ago. I can barely bend over to touch my toes, and sitting down for an extended period is pretty uncomfortable. Took me a good couple of weeks to get back to normal last time.

I'll be 36 in a month. I need to try and be more consistent with the gym, especially at this age.

You need then to look at movements like "Kickstand hinges" and technique, Your back should not be giving out at any point with the right stability in place.
Ill also add doing the Kickstand hinges just on their own can really help recovery or other hip based isometric exercises for recovering/ strength. They have been my secret weapon for years no and at near 45Im deadlifting the same weight without pains or aches.

yeh just little bits of been active helps, even gave up my fishkeeping as my standards were slipping and found it a bit hard to do and never wanted the fish to suffer, mostly kept american cichlids and cat fish.

had a lovely day earlier at park view trout fishery with my dad an sister and her partner, my dad caught 2 and i had one on but it slipped of the hook :P

the guys there gave all 4 off us a pass for a free 3 hours next time we go as it wasnt fishing to good because of the water temp at 22c lmao, that is awesome :)

there was a trout we named bob that spent the whole 6 hours we were fishing coming right up to the bank and he wasnt interested in any food :p

got one of these the other day to catch sprats and small fish for bait but ended up using it for trout earlier and thats the rod i had a trout on a little 6 foot ultra light ugly stick in orange, yay its ultra light but tough and casts good lol

I feel you. Back in June I rode the London 2 Brighton in aid of the British Heart Foundation (Shameless fundraising plug), got knocked off 1.5km from the finish (another rider got too close and his jersey caught my bar :( ) I landed hard of my right hip, nice stretch of gravel rash under my arm (landed cradling my head). That was nearly 8 weeks ago and I have only just got to the point where riding more than an hour is ok, not back to normal but ok.... this is after three physio sessions and doing bugger all other than stretching!

After getting my bike fixed and learning some new skills (fixing bikes is a science who knew!) I was desperate to get back out but the body just would not let me!

Oh I was 46 at the end of June!

ouch mate thank you so much for riding, bikes can be simple to repair if your used to them my road bike needs a octa tool to remove the bottom bracket, and the mountain bike needs a different one etc

im a bit drunk, yes my physical body is like this heart failure but alcohol is the only thing that makes me feel happy arrrgghhhhh yes it is a contradiction thasnks to complex ptsd im a bit hooked at the moment every few days i need drink to help either the anxiety or other thingsc :(

anti deprressants just dull you no highs but still high lows trhey try to balance it and fail......

think i have a sram square taper one on my mountain bike for the bottom brackek fitted and i wore out a chainng ring on it and had to replace the chain rings, after tousands of miles:P
