Almost ran over a small child

30mph speed limit. High street.

I was doing approx 20-25mph when a ginger kid approx 4 ran from between two parked cars causing me to break suddenly.

Closest ive ever come to accidently hitting someone with my car.

Same thing happened to me, except the kid bounced off the side of my car. He was fine, but had he run out just a split second earlier then he would have been toast.

Reminds me when we were in Rome getting a taxi to the train station. We approached a pedestrian crossing the driver accelerated towards the people crossing before slamming his brakes on. He then looked over his shoulder to me and my wife and said "striiiiiike".

My brother used to do that. I was scared to go in a car with him. I remember one day he accelerated towards a woman crossing the road and he missed her by inches. The husband chased us down the road screaming.

So, hypothetically, if you hit that child and caused serious injury, or worse death, would you be prosecuted?

Yes, you have killed a child. But it was 100% not your fault (assuming you were driving completely within the law, responsibly etc).
Just because the speed limit is 30 doesn't mean the law would protect you, you could be done for driving without due care. You drive to the conditions not the speed limit.

So everyone drives at 5mph when passing parked cars lining a street?

What is 'due care'? Surely then, when passing any object you can't see behind, you should drive at a snails pace?

If you don't know the answer, it's in the highway code so maybe worth refreshing your knowledge of it.

expect the unexpected, and widen the angle - does seem car manufacturers have gone off the boil on pedestrian detection systems, versus more esoteric stuff.

where is the green cross man these days ?

If only our government would think about good road layout. Instead of tryng to bodge it and only make things confusing.

They would rather waste millions on stupid projects like that ridiculous "Dutch roundabout" in Cambridge.

Can't be this bad

There is a village not far from me which has a couple of mini roundabouts you can't actually drive around as they are so tight. A bit like that. Everyone just drives straight over them and every year or so the council comes out to re-paint them after they are completely worn away and covered in rubber. Should just be normal T junctions.

The conditions being it's a road with a speed limit and you're driving within it.

If anyone should be prosecuted in this scenario it's the parents.
