Almost ran over a small child

If only our government would think about good road layout. Instead of tryng to bodge it and only make things confusing.

They would rather waste millions on stupid projects like that ridiculous "Dutch roundabout" in Cambridge.
The irony is that Dutch style roundabouts are much safer than U.K. style roundabouts and all the evidence shows they actually work.

Segregated pedestrians, cyclists and cars with lower speeds lead to less accidents, less near misses and less fatalities.

I’m sorry this doesn’t compute with nasher logic.

The actual problem here is not the driver. We've had decades telling us 'Speed Kills' and (responsible) drivers have responded as per the OP. The funding for that social engineering exercise? They pulled the funding from the (most successful government campaign ever, bar none) Green Cross Code. Now, children are not taught 'Road safety', unless you are very lucky and the now privately funded Green Cross Code has visited your local school.

Another Dutch roundabout built too recently, but in Hemel Hempstead. Built in one of the least busiest parts of the town, AKA at an industrial estate where there are virtually no pedestrians or cyclists

Likely on purpose so that they can say "look it made no difference to accident figures, so let's not waste any more money on these".

"yes we installed one and we've not had a single accident since, pls give us £500m for another two"

"Yacht? What yacht? No mate, not my yacht"

Pretty sure it’s been built in an area that’s about to see thousands of houses built but let’s not get facts get in the way of a good story.

So, hypothetically, if you hit that child and caused serious injury, or worse death, would you be prosecuted?

Yes, you have killed a child. But it was 100% not your fault (assuming you were driving completely within the law, responsibly etc).
Unless you were speeding - no.

This unfortunately happened to one of my Wife's friends about 8 or 9 years ago (iirc), where a child of similar age bolted into the road from between parked cars.... sadly she had an Audi SUV and the child died as a result of the impact.

The mother said that the kid had managed to get free of her hand at the time, and sadly the worst outcome happened.

The friend of my Wife was investigated by the Police, and it took quite a few months, but she wasn't prosecuted or banned in any way. Though we never knew the exact details, as it was such a traumatic event - I would imagine that there were witnesses that confirmed she wasn't speeding, and the mother of the child confirmed that the child just ran into the road.

Such a horrific event - she didn't drive for about a year or so, as she couldn't face it, and to this day, has a handwritten letter from the mother that she cannot bear to open.

Not sure the law has changed since this event, but I expect if it can be proven that you weren't speeding, and couldn't have time to react, then you might only get a driving ban

The way they have been built here is not quite the same and it looks more dangerous.

OFC stats will be spun and one of them is in a place with practically no foot traffic.

They are fundamentally the same.

You just don’t like it because you in your car has to give way to the ‘lesser beings’ that don’t have one.

No the stats are not spun, you just can’t accept facts and evidence over your own internal biases which are not based on either.

I was only referring to the Hemel Hempstead roundabout that was built recently anyway. £2m spent to build a roundabout in a poor location doesn't sound like a waste of money to you?

And on another point, building houses right next to the Buncefield Oil storage depot sounds a bit mad, considering what happened there in 2005.

The conditions being it's a road with a speed limit and you're driving within it.

If anyone should be prosecuted in this scenario it's the parents.
I mean technically pedestrians have right of way on those sort of roads so no. Would you also buzz past a horse at full speed as well. What's the big issue with taking your time and driving to the conditions.

Not when there are thousands of houses to be built in the surrounding fields.

I just checked, 11,000 houses and an additional 10,000 jobs are planned for the empty land surrounding the existing industrial estate by 2050.

People complain the infrastructure doesn’t get out in before the houses. They put the infrastructure in and people complain it’s a waste of money because the houses are not built yet.

They have been building them on flood plains in my area (next to the Ouse) which have flooded at least 3 times in the past 10 years, so not suprising. The council and construction companies don't care about safety.

One part of an estate was flooded pretty much right after they built it. Did they stop and think maybe it was a dumb idea? Nope they carried on building more lol
