Are cinemas target audience now under-30s?

Last time I went cinema was about 5 years ago:

I feel there's not good releases anymore

and cinemas are more orientated towards families and under 30s.

Am I wrong?

The last time I was in the cinema was 2021 and particular cinema I visited has closed now.

I find the volume to be too loud in cinemas, but I appreciate that this is probably to try and drown out the noise of brats distracting other viewers. I think I'd rather watch a film at home these days - far cheaper and convenient.

The thing is the whole release to dvd/ streaming time is usually about 30 days or less after the film is taken off the big screen, so a lot of the time what's the point? Digital media killed the radio show....

I still go to the cinema a lot because it's more of an event up here, combined with dinner out or a shopping trip.

Back in London it was £3 quid to see any film any time but it wasn't worth the effort of it being ruined by talking kids and chavs just brings c words.

Waiting for the BFFC to rate a film at over 30s only just to prove the OP wrong.

It’s simple.. back in the days you either watched it at the cinema when it first came out.. or you have to wait months for it to come out on VHS/DVD to rent and then months again till you could buy the movie for your collection.

Now some films have a same day release as the cinema or just a few weeks before you can stream it.

TVs and sound systems are a lot better at home now than ever.. movie buffs will no doubt have a setup that’s better than most cinemas, unless your lucky enough to live near one of the 4D cinemas or true 4k ones.

Now kids and young adults who don’t have their own space will likely go to the cinemas as an “event”.. god knows how many dates I attended at the cinema. Once I got my “pad”, it was a case of “coming round mine for Netflix and chill? ;)

The last time I went was in 2005. I think there are a few reasons. Cinemas were often filled with idiots. I recall seeing Ghostbuster in 1984 and people shouting and throwing things around and generally being annoying. The price of a ticket is very high now. Home TVs are loads better now. You can get a nice 5.1 or 7.1 setup with a large TV screen. You don't have to go anywhere or queue up. You can pause it to go to the toilet if needed. You can eat/drink what you want at a price you want to pay. Most things released these days are rubbish but they are on some streaming network quite quickly after cinema release, so you can be annoyed at home for less money.

Even things that should be aimed at adults like borderlands and minecraft... average age of their fans must be like 35 surely... but they made the movies for 5 year olds
Parents and the kids double ticket sales :p

Just checked what’s on at my local place

Superman.. seriously, another one?
Fantastic four.. superhero meh and seriously, another one?
Jurassic world.. seriously, another one?
The naked gun.. Liam Neeson being Liam Neeson for the millionth time
Smurfs.. might be alright for the kids
28 years later.. didn’t everyone say this was crap?
Bring her back.. might be alright but too risky, just wait until stream

So yeah, zero need to go to the cinema.

The event aspect is overlooked. I find it really nice to go with my partner. Sort of a ‘date’ I guess.

No phones, no pets, so more immersion and focus… relax, talk about it on the way home etc. It’s fun and then it’s nice to ‘get home’ + retire, if that makes sense.
