5 best looking aeroplanes

De Havilland Comet

Pretty much nailed the commercial design proportions so early on and those integrated engines are so sleek it’s beautiful in BOAC guise with silver wings. Basically a pioneer of modern aviation laced with plenty of tragedy unfortunately.

Would have been one of my picks - quite a forward looking design which kind of looks like it was backported from some alternative future.

Seeng as I'm not allowed to mention Concorde, I'll mention another beauty that was once regularly visible in the skies over Bristol.

The Guppy.

From memory, it flew Airbus wings and other oversized parts from other Airbus facilities to the Airbus site in Filton.

Last time I went to Filton, the runway was being turned into a housing development & hence all large Airbus parts are now shipped in by sea via Royal Portbury Dock.

There's progress for you

I did my work experience week at Airbus in Filton as a teen. I had the pleasure of seeing the Guppy in person that week.

Also got to sit in the cockpit of a USAF F-111 and stand nearby as they did a full burn test of the engines. The thing that sticks with me is the speed at which the bomb bay doors snapped shut, truly ferocious and not something you would want to have a mishap around.

It is a real shame that the runway isn't being preserved. At least we might eventually get a decent concert venue in the Brabazon Hangar (they have applied to increase the capacity by another 1000, so new planning required again).

Is Bristol finally getting a concert arena? They've been talking about that for almost as long as they've been talking about Rovers getting a new stadium.

Yep, been so long. All part of the Filton redevelopment. It keeps slipping back, currently a 2027 target. Two phased upgrade of the railway station too.

Sorry for the derailment, on topic always loved the Tornado. Watching them fly past below you in the Welsh valleys was always my favourite part of school trips.

Love the Tonca, worked on a runway when they were still in service.

Also have a massive love for the U2, just watching it takeoff and land was a sight to behold.

The A-10 Thunder Bolt and the Avro Vulcan bomber. The latter of which I've been lucky enough to sit inside. Both amazing planes, both aesthetically and mechanically.

A bit of plane porn is always good for the soul.
Planes are hot. They are also amazing. Whenever I fly it always blows my mind. Especially when I did the microlight experience. That was insane. Didn't feel you should be able to fly with what sounds like a moped engine in the back
