OK I know the arguments for new, I am NOT asking that

I had my OPC die a few weeks back (I have been into IT since CP/M and started 2 computer clubs years back, I am not an never have been a "pro" just loved IT).

I have built mine and my three sons computers from 386's.

The one that died was my sons gaming computer, the one that died before that was his old, old gaming PC.

I use Pinnacle Studio 26 (been using Pinnacle since 10, 2005, I use Photoshop, and before that JASK Paint shop Pro since 2000) no gaming just 4k video and very large image files from a Hasselblad.

Now, I refuse where possible to buy new, preferring pre owned, so.

CEX (UK) FIVE year guarantee.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 8GB GDDR5X £105 (and remember yes I could buy new and get a ONE year guarantee !!!)

2x Seagate BarraCuda Pro 10TB 3.5" SATA £140 each (everything on the list 5 year guarantee.

Samsung 990 PRO MZ-V9P2T0B 2TB PCIe 2280 NVME M.2 £120

Corsair Vengeance RGB Grey (2x16GB) 6000MTs CMH32GX5M2B6000Z30K £100

Intel Core i7-14700K (12EC + 8PC/28T @3.40GHz) LGA1700 £250 (again I got a 5 year guarantee and I am happy with pre owned)

The rest (Motherboard, cooler, Power ) was new only because I could not get used with a good guarantee.

The rest carried over from the older computer

I've bought very few computer parts new in my time - namely HDDs, SSDs and fans/cases. Stuff like cables, fittings and accessories maybe.

But motherboards, CPU, RAM, graphics cards I think have always been used.

It's a bit like cars - there's a big discount for going used even if you buy last year's top product. And it's hard to go back.

100% no one "assumes" that everyone buys a new house or car.

I have been into Photography since I was 12, I also shoot "professionally" I am in fact NUJ, Welsh Press, accredited.

I did buy £18K of new gear 14 years ago, but I was fortunate to have been left a small inheritance, however most of my camera gear is pre owned.

I bought a Hasselblad H5D from CEX, £1400, (I don't smoke, drink and am a single father of three autistic sons 33,32 and 30) my ONLY passions have always been computing and photography.

We do!

(and FWIW, most of the components of my current main PC and mini PC, and my laptop are bought pre-owned! )

and just to show receipts:

it's a bit hard to recommend used parts as prices tend to fluctuate somewhat

but in general for £500 or so, used parts, this is what i would get if it were my money:

cpu: ryzen 5600, or intel 12400f
cpu cooler: thermalright assassin king 120 se (this is £17 new, not on ocuk, a quick google will suffice)
mobo: any am4 board for ryzen, or intel b660/b760 board
ram: 32gb (2x 16gb) ddr4 3200mhz
gpu: rx 6600/xt or rtx 3060
ssd: a reputable 1tb nvme m.2 ssd
psu: a reputable 650w psu
case: any case to your/their liking

A pre-owned system would be the best bet here.
Could get a Ryzen 5600 + RTX 2060 build for under £300.

buying pre-owned can be surprisingly reasonable (or expensive depending on availability of warranty ofc)
i just completed a 8700k + 3060ti build for the gf - total cost was £620 for the whole tower

if you go pre-owned, can get a very decent build for that kind of money

you can get this pre-owned for £150 and in stock

Budget of £140 for new parts is a tad unrealistic. 8gb ram itself eats up half the budget already.

Better off going pre-owned

talk to him about going used. personally for that budget would get a used 5600 (non-x), and a used 4060/7600 (non-xt)
that would likely be a bigger upgrade as the frametimes would be much much smoother

the utilitarian in me would suggest getting a used ex-corp intel 8th gen pc from ebay for £200 or so, but i would suspect you'd balk at that idea lol

if you're definitely changing out the pc in a couple of years then personally i would rather get a used ex-corp workstation, would work out cheaper up front, and you also don't eat the depreciation on the new parts
roblox and a bit of content creation on the side does not sound particularly taxing and does not call for a large sum of money to be spent

Honestly with that kind of budget...just get a used ex-corp computer
Anything with intel 8th gen or ryzen 2000 and above will be windows 11 compatible
(and more importantly around your budget or thereabouts)

People buy second hand all the time.

I think CeX doesn't get mentioned a lot because it's kinda a competitor? It sells all kinds of junk but it sells computer hardware and this forum is paid for by a shop that specialises in computer hardware and isn't keen on anyone talking about competitors.

I've recommended going second hand to people a few times, at least within reason.

I've bought and sold a fair chunk of hardware on this very forum, but you need Members Market access which is 1000 + posts and a few other things. I'm wary of dealing with places like ebay as it can often be more effort than it's worth, but local sellers and even the odd highstreet shop can be worth checking.

There are certain things that I prefer to buy new, namely power supplies and graphics cards, but I wouldn't be entirely opposed to the latter depending on the deal. Pretty much every other component I've bought used at at least some point over the years.

I'm a huge fan of the used market. Always will be!
Don't have anything against buying new for some things, but motherboards, CPUs and GPUs I prefer buying used.

If it's just for messing about then selling off quickly, used cases and coolers are things I'll always go to also.

I love pre-owned hardware. I bought a whole used PC off the forums during or just after COVID. Off the top of my head I've only got a handful of new parts across 3 PCs.

Both of my GPUs are used, two of my PSUs, all of my CPUs, one of my motherboards, all of my RAM, two cases, most of my fans, a few of my SSDs, etc.

I bought a bargain off here a couple of months ago when building a new system.
A member was selling a motherboard and CPU for a great price and he'd only had them about 3 months.

I do . I built a AM4 PC using parts I bought from here in the MM and also the bay, it's great fun and feels more rewarding when it all comes together and works.

I don't buy 2nd hand parts, I just don't want the hassle if it goes wrong or if it has been abused.
I have plenty computer peripherals. still sealed in boxes, which I like to sell but I don't trust eBay etc.

Most of my PCs have been a combination of new and used.

Actually, all of them now I come to think of it.

The question is when the 14700 rusts to death what do you do if CEX have no replacement? I literally wouldn’t touch the 13/14 gen intel parts with a barge pole. You’d have to pay me to take it off your hands and supply a free motherboard.

I suppose most people buy new for simplicity, peace of mind and like for like replacements.

I fished a first gen i5 out of CEX the other year for a replacement for a couple of quid, it's going to be a long time before it's impossible to find a mainstream cpu on the second hand market.

The failure rates on those Intel parts is very high. So high, Intel has been offering cultra parts as replacements.

I built a new server with used parts. Based around a very cheap intel 9500. The hardest part was finding a decent, compatible, with no bios upgraded needed for CPU, motherboard. Ended up spending about new prices for one of the few I could find for sale.

Probably I was being too picky, but I did wonder about new when trying to find something. Although the £30 CPU reminded me to continue!
