EV general discussion

I actually prefer the look of the Hypervolt at the moment, though I hope you can turn off / down that dodgy light on the front

You can :) it’s the model I’m going for as well and that was definitely on my to research list before going for it.

My nickname is monkey so this is very on brand

It's the Hypervolt 3 that I'm getting installed on Monday, all being well.

Remember to seek out at any grants that you can get for installation, I got £400 which lessens the £1,500 installation cost. Yes, that's is high but it's a tricky install with a garage consumer unit required and more cable than normal.

I still have my 'lights' on my Hypervolt, it's subtle enough.. just the default colour = mode/status which is static...

I did bring the tone of the neighbourhood down when good old Queen Lizzy popped her clogs and had that on the In Memorium mode for 2 weeks..

I still rate the Hypervolt, works well and still a good mix of size/cable hiding.. My neighbour has a Zappi, it looks massive by comparison and starting to look a bit dated..

As for the GLO.. why oh why did they make such little space available for the cable? surely they could have made it retain a 5-10M cable like the Hypervolt does and not make you loop it under the unit as per the promotional shots.. It certainly will not look 'neat' :(

I had my Hypervolt 3 installed a couple of weeks ago, cost £1200 in total using a local electrician. My install was tricky also as the consumer unit was a good distance from the front of the property. Standard installers wouldnt touch it but luckily
a local electrician would and did a good job of routing the cable.
Just waiting for the Born VZ to be delivered next week. I wasnt really looking at changing my vehicle but £10k off list price and 7000 free charging miles tempted me!.

Just been quoted £1000 to fit and install a hypervolt 3 charger. We wanted a white one as our house is white and didn't want a thing to stick out too much.

Plus it seems to be the only one where the cable neatly wraps around it. All the others just dangle about

Good price you got then!

I've requested a 6 way garage consumer unit in the garage (for future garage rewiring) and then the supply cable for the charger run in white conduit as the black cable would really stick out along the run of the house. Hopefully it'll look alright.

Where are such grants available? I've had a look on my local council website but to no avail

Right, last question (hopefully for the forseeable future)

WWOCUKD?

Either:
(A) £1.3k for zappi with my original solar PV installer, or
(B) £1k for wallbox pulsar max installed by eon

Pros of (A):
- compatible with octopus and eon
- my solar PV + battery is insulated and not connected to the charger, so I can export the solar and battery won't discharge to charge the car
Cons of (A):
- expensive
- zappi charging box is massive

Pros of (B):
- cheaper
- pulsar max is small
-compatible with octopus and eon
Cons of (B):
- unit is not blind to my existing solar setup

£300 at 7p/kwh is ~4300kwh, which is A LOT of miles on an EV, but is it worth the £300 just for the peace of mind that the charging circuit is done properly?
(properly = insulated from the PV circuit)

Which grant did you get?

I wasn't aware of any for home chargers for regular people anymore?

Zappi

Or hypervolt.

Why wouldn’t B be blind to your battery setup but A would be? That determined by the physical wiring than the charger itself unless you have a libi battery.

B doesn’t have integrated cable management so it will look messier than the Zappi.

Edit: don’t forget export rates could change in the future so it might make sense to charge your car from solar again so it would be handy to have that feature.

It was from the Energy Savings Trust and it appears it's for those owning or leasing an EV in rural or remote parts of Scotland. Sorry for getting anyone's hopes up.

There is a grant available in England for those with on-street parking - provides EV drivers support towards the costs of the purchase and installation of EV chargepoints at residential properties when also installing a cross-pavement charging solution. Source. Doesn't look like it will help much though.

Ah, fair enough - don't worry :)

Probably won't apply to me as I have a driveway.

Zappi
Or hypervolt.
Hypervolt hope 3 pro is £1049 from octopus
is it a better charger (fwiw lol) compared to the zappi?

I'm guessing because it's installed by eon (or octopus if i opt for the hypervolt) that they won't do the isolation/ct clamping/whatever needed to isolate the EV from the PV batteries

B doesn’t have integrated cable management so it will look messier than the Zappi.

ah good points

i've just been reading up on the battery-sparing features on the hypervolt and zappi and seems both can be configured to sense export and "battery-safe" settings.
seems like i'm making a mountain out of a molehill lol

guess i'd just go with octopus, even though i'd prefer to support small business, £250 saving can't be sniffed at :/
