Relocation to Spain Experience

Just discovered this thread - Can i ask if anyone has done the family of an EU resident over in Spain? We submitted the original form (Ive got my residency now so did the other half's) - Then we found out they wanted proof that we were actually living and breathing in the area???. Sent that proof off via the post office but that was weeks ago? - Problem is the 3 month date they gave my wife is coming up to technically leave??
The issue i have with that is my wife has freedom of movement piggy backing off me, so she isnt bound by the 90 day rule - you just have to register if staying for longer than 3 months?
Anyone else had experience with this? Even more annoyed as she wouldve had a job she kinda wanted if she had her TIE card - but cant do jack till they come back to say yes???
Spanish dont hurry do they :D.....
i have my appointment soon, it took over a month to get a date. If you both have residency then you can go anytime, just email them and ask.

Genuine question. Do you think this life changing event - it's quite a big deal, ask me how I know - will change your views or behaviour or, well, approach to life? Or will you just be you but in a different country?

Sorry. Also missed this. I’m only here as part of my wife’s EU citizenship.

As far as I know. As long as the application is in process the 90 day rule is put on hold. I had a lot of issues and was well over 90 days in the end including having an application closed and opening a new one but I never had issues.

I’d say it takes a few things to weigh up.

IF you buy new then I’d sell and replace here. If you prefer to buy used then I’d transport it. Second hand goods here just don’t seem worthwhile for the most part.
As an example I was looking at bikes and people were selling 2yr old bikes for €500 when you could get the equivalent bike brand new for €600. It doesn’t make sense.

Big stuff I agree with but I sold a lot of tools in the UK for peanuts that’s cost a lot to replace like for like.
Going to buy new when i am over there. Not going to get 2nds. I was thinking just get rid of everything but only keep clothes. I put aside € 8000 for bike, laptop PC, washing machine, fridge, dishwasher, tV and the kitchen stuff.

Same person. Different place.

Anyone moving and thinking they’ll chance is deluded in my opinion. We create fantasies of these other lives and how different life will be but ultimately you’re still the same. Just in another place.

Should be fine. New stuff is generally comparable to the UK. Only complaint is you usually end up with most things around RRP whereas the UK discounts a lot more (in general. There will always be exceptions)

depends where you move, age, and what your interests are ...
If you have learn a new language and can also massively improve quality of leisure time, you work life balance changes ... as I mentioned before a red pill .
NZ wasn't changing for you then ?

I think bit of everything, I personallly I had enough of the UK and really starting to dislike the country. The last few years the changes have been huge and not in the right direction, I also thought why suffer the daily crap.
I have lived in other countries and always thought I'd leave the UK one day. The last 5 years I have been thinking of moving and I think now is the time.
I understand that it will not be paradise, yes there will be issues.

I think your attitude towards things change when you move. I am a oudoors person love the beach etc... and Spain offers me this, plus I do like their way of living, always have.
Plus the economy is growing fast and in the right direction, this gives me the opportunity to progess.

I think you’d be surprised. The economy may be growing but if I was benchmarked to Spanish salaries I’d be around on around 30% less and the cost of living isn’t really low enough to compensate. Luckily I kept my UK salary but it’d be tough if I ever find myself needing a job again I think.

I’m pretty outdoorsy too although more mountainous but I don’t think I do that much more than in the UK. You just swap running in the rain for running in the heat. Sometimes it’s nicer sometimes it’s less so.

It depends on the industry, wages in my area equal, we can remote work.

No, it was huge which was my point. I think - and bear with me here as this gets a little bit whimsical more than practical - I think it goes both ways. You bring something to the country and the country hopefully brings something to, or out of, you. The idea of moving and staying the same person feels odd to me. Odd and selfish. Moving abroad should feel life changing because it is and it should change your life for the better but you have to be able to or want to change too.

I guess it also depends on motivation for moving. If you’re happy with your life and just want to relocate then in my head I don’t see moving to NZ as that much different to moving from London to Newcastle.
Might as well be the same thing. You’re moving to a completely different area you don’t know and where you don’t know anyone.

My brain is probably a bit broken in keeping things neutral but it doesn’t feel like that big of a deal.
There’s an adjustment period the same as moving anywhere but I’m not sure why it’s change you. Maybe also depends on age when moving too.

OK we agree - thought you were sarcastic about the magnitude of changes moving introduced;

it is a jump into the dark, and didn't work out for some of my colleagues;
NZ, from the UK is obviously also a different dimension in terms of keeping contact with any UK friends/relatives versus europe (not a w/e eayjet flight),
I had considered Japan which was a relocation option when I moved, but I think it was the distance that put me off.

Chase them up. Email them. Call them. Basically irritate them to the point they just want shot of you. It's works a treat, trust me. I've been on both sides of that fence many, many times.
Lol this is spain not the UK. Manana. It'll be done when its done and not before. Everything is at a much slower pace of life the UK seems ridiculously frantic when you come back everything is noisy, crowded, busy. Busy, busy, busy. And expensive. Boy is it expensive you can live comfortably on a state pension there where here you'll be eating out of baked bean tins shivering because you can't afford the heating.

It's a strange thing, manana is definitely a thing but there's then a weird attitude shift where if you get angry they generally just do something straight away to avoid the hassle. I think politeness/patience is definitely taken advantage of here and that's hit me a few times as that's generally my personality.

Surely moving countries and not changing is why you end up with hordes of expat/immigrant Brits living in Spain but still wanting their fish and chips and pubs...

They want the best of both worlds? I hardly ever go to the chip shop, last was over a year ago.

i was hoping to transfer one of my pensions to my target country. Worried about labour and the constant tax raid.

I worked in Spain in 1979, breakfast was usually bocadillo con anchoa or a cold Spanish omelette served with terrific coffee. Lunch was a salad dressed with olive oil and wine vinegar followed by an egg dish then a meat dish with watered wine. Then a short siesta. Dinner was very late around ten pm and similar to lunch. Spanish food is very good and not all English are peasants. ;)
