Golf Thread

I'm off on a two-day golf trip on Sunday/Monday and we've all been asked to bring a small prize so most holes will have a prize of some form, £10-15 but not sure what to get? A bunch will likely be alcohol but I don't drink so generally prefer something else but a sleeve of balls just seems so boring...

Any thoughts? Most of the people are regular golfers so a lot of the 'golf gift' packs will be utterly useless so really not sure what to get...

County golf have a bunch of under armor polo's on sale tonight for £11 each?

Code Warehouse55

Thanks for the ideas guys, think I'll avoid clothing as I'm that big guy that it wouldn't fit :p Gonna try and get one of those brushes and maybe look at what ball markers/branded stuff they've got at the courses I'm playing before then (got 6 days straight!) for something a bit different...

Titleist fitting tonight... Could be a warm one!!

Told the wife it's a just "long" lesson I'm going for...

She can't understand why it takes 2 hours but seems none the wiser!

So fun to play with some new toys tonight.

Went all the way through the Titleist range from T100/150/250.... Played around with shafts etc

They are beautiful clubs - really quality feel and look about them

Looking at a combo set potentially.

6-pw in the T150's AMT Black shaft and 4/5 iron in the T250 AMT Black shaft. Need to play around with the lofts a little to blend the set.

7 iron T150 -hit 8 solid shots, spin deviated by only 252rpm across those shots, distance spread was only 3.5 yards front to back and ball speed incredibly stable only 1.5mph spread across all the shots

0.75" longer - A1 Upright setting on the demo clubs which I think is 3 degrees upright.

Also a 3 iron but he's going to see if he can fit a similar shaft to my driver/3w (Tensei blue) so I can use it as a driving iron/utility iron in the T250 range.

Not sure it will be a nice price across the board but will see what we come up with and go from there....

^ Very nice, what irons did they have available to hit within each range? Presumably more than just a 7i and what was the ball?

Pro v1 RCT balls for the trackman.

at the moment only the 7 iron in the fitting kits - until full launch later this month (August 20th I think) - fitters have loads of shaft options but only a 7 iron in the T100/150/250/350 heads.

Like he said - if every product provider gave out even 3/5/7/9 in every head option - there would be just far to many to stock/hold etc

Unless you go to a full proper Titleist fitting place (Premier fitter I think they call them or a full titleist demo day) - most will be limited....(and you'll pay a fair bit for them)

He did have 2/3 irons in the t250u and u505 as well which I hit.

I don't mind to be honest - I done enough fittings and geeky enough to know what works/doesn't work for me.

AMT Black shaft was great but couldn't hit the AMT silver for toffee.

Also weirdly the T100's which felt amazing - couldn't keep the spin down even with shaft changes etc... Lovely feel but far to spinny for me and loss of distance due to the increased spin.

Where did you do your fitting @booyaka? Might go for a Titleist FW fitting but did not rate the experience at Golf it! at all

one of my local pro's i know at his place in Prestwick.

Keep your eyes peeled for events popping up when offically launched (20th this month) - Depends who you get Golf it (if it's the proper Titleist guy he's great - Roddy Spence) - I've done 3w fitting and wedge fitting with him in the past.

Demo days will appear but you need to be fast

Pairs strokeplay comp this weekend over Sat/Sun. Best net score between you on each hole counts. Leaders after round one came in with 58 nett (playing off 20 & 15)

My partner and I didn't play great so sitting 12 shots back. Next best scores are a pair of 62's.

Blew the final comp of the year on the last 3 holes as per usual. Capped at 20 so no bandit scores today to worry about, should have been net 65 but I fudged the last OB

Been playing lots of golf recently as usual, today was 4th day in a row and got 2 more days to go!

Wednesday was the networking meeting at Cumberwell Park, played decently and got 37 points, happy with that.
Thursday another networking meeting this time at Whitchurch GC in Cardiff, interesting course but being Wales it obviously rained even though we're in the middle of a heatwave :p I do struggle in the rain a bit but 33 points on a course I've never played with, I'm not unhappy with it.
Friday was another NCG Top 100 tour day at Frilford Heath (Blue course), nice course but didn't play great, actually pretty terrible on the front 9 but solid on the back (7 over gross). Was really hot though, drank so much water and still felt pretty done by the end, but even with that I par'd the last so maybe a bit of dehydration is what I need :p
Today was the 'Ryder Cup' at my local club, Red team led by the Mens vice-captain and Blue team led by the Ladies vice-captain. I've given shots before in matchplay but today was 11 shots which is the most I've had so far, it was a struggle. Did ok on the front nine but always felt like I was just struggling to stay afloat then a few errors on the back 9 and it was all over for me. Overall though the red team, which I was on, won 7.5 vs 5.5 \o/

Next two days are scramble rounds at the Vale of Glamorgan, should be a good laugh but gonna be pretty broken by the end, 6 days walking in a row, and with this heat, is a lot :p

Managed to equal my lowest ever score today, 90. Decided early on to use a lower tee peg than usual even though the wind was just a whisper, resulting in a straighter ball flight. Fairway woods and irons behaved better too, my weakness was my putting, scoring 6 x 3 putts. Also, I shot 15 over the 3 par 3’s.
Overall I am happy with my game today, but I know I could easily have done better.
Yet again and after 2 horrendous rounds I have equalled my lowest score i.e. 90 today.

Driving was superb, irons were fairly good, but my chipping around the greens and my putting let me down. Really happy with my overall game too, I do try to focus on the positives, but know I could easily have done better.

+1 to the years birdie count (26) which was the only highlight of my play today :( Putting completely inept, it was embarrassing. Somehow despite this my partner played great, shot +1 gross. His putting such a contrast, if it's not holed it's always threatening and his pace control is examplary. It's the same every time I've played with him in the roll up or medal comps. I was a last minute partner this weekend, he deserved far better!

Leaders from yesterday ended up losing by one shot. Winning score being 125 net/-19.

Take a look at this video from around 39 minutes for some putting tips. (whole video is amazing as always from TPI but putting at 39 minutes) - specifically on speed control with putting

I 100% agree with this - I look at the hole WAY more than my setup/line etc - My pace/speed is probably the number 1 biggest asset I have.

As he says - if your throwing a ball to someone - you don't look at your hand/how your holding the ball etc - you look at the person you are throwing to in order to judge the speed you need to throw - you arm/muscles know what to do, but you dictate the speed of the throw.

If your playing basketball and shoot at the hoop - you look at the hoop, not the ball in your hand etc.

In other words - look at the hole more than your setup/looking down at the ball.

Back has been getting a lot better so managed to get out for a few rounds last week and took it easy.

Played pretty well surprisingly considering I hadn't swung a club since before I tore the ligament in my back - ironically the same one mentioned in Happy Gilmore, can also confirm I couldn't hit the ball 500 yards...

Still ****** that I basically missed the whole summer for golf...

Finally a day without golf! :p

Completed 6 consecutive days yesterday as mentioned, definitely feeling it! My achilles is a little sore (get that a bit) but more worrying is my left elbow is sore/has tendonitis which isn't great, if I hadn't already booked/paid for it I probably would've cancelled the last 2 days but hey, hopefully it'll clear up quickly.

The Vale Resort was pretty good, hotel was just 'ok' but food was good and I really enjoyed the golf course, we played the National course which I think is meant to be the lesser of the two courses but it was still really good I thought, some very nice holes imo.

We played a scramble format over the 2 days there, same teams with cumulative score and a whole bunch of small prizes as we all brought something as mentioned. Was/am a bit dubious of the scoring tbh, we played some really solid golf as a 4-ball of mid-high handicappers (min of 18, max of 25) getting 14 shots we scored 52 points both days, -2 gross with 3-4 birdies and a couple of bogeys per round. We lost :p The winners were similar handicaps, same shots, but went -4 and -6 gross over the two rounds. I've played a few scrambles now, and it's not a format I enjoy or even really do well at as I lose interest, I guess it's plausible but seems like we played decent golf and didn't stand a chance :p

Anyway, rest time! Enjoying no golf today, there is a roll-up at my local tomorrow but probably give that a miss to rest the elbow and then see how the weekend feels :)

12 Holes last night - nights certainly starting to draw in.

Hit the ball fantastic off the tee last night - really well. Build up to the big Semi Final clash on Friday against my mate....

Anyway - handicap drifted up after the weekend - had a good scratch 74 drop off so jumped up 0.6 to 6.4.... Hopefully trim that back down into the 5's before the end of the season.

Weird night playing your long time playing partner in a competitive game....

Semi Final of the year long Singles knockout against my normal doubles partner!! ( i was getting one shot)

Anyway - off to a great start with potentially the longest drive I've ever hit up the par 5 1st - Left 7 iron for 2nd shot - solid birdie to start.

Anyway - holed a good putt on 5 to go 3up and then won 7th to go 4 up. He won 8 and we both holed 20ft putts on 9 for a half.

He found a number of bunkers on the night and sadly some poor raking from previous people left him in 3 horrible foot prints in the bunkers.

I made a mess of 12, so back to 2up - I got a shot up 13th but didn't need it.

He then shanked his tee shot on 14th and I hit 7 wood to about 15ft on the 200 yard into breeze par 3.

4up with 4 to play and again he found bunker off the tee and I hit driver, then 3w pin high in 2 and a nice chip to 3 ft sealed the tie 5&3 after he conceded.

Tough to play - someone had to win/loose. All good - solid golf from me with very few mistakes which was nice.

Finals it is... Need to be played before mid September so not sure who I've got yet. Would be nice to have some silverware.

Out this morning....

Played super solid golf - Birdies 49/50 & 51 for the year (50 was the target)

Cruising towards my best ever back tee score.... Bad club choice on 18th tee - too conservative... led to a shocking tee shot and then 3 putted to add insult to injury.... for a triple at the last.

Should be buzzing after 76 scratch but somehow just deflated more

Should still get a decent cut and nice to get the 50 birdies for the year done already.
