Still no Heretic 2 on digital platforms though.

I'm half tempted to give this a go. I remember trying out Hexen back in the day and after about 10 minutes, having absolutely no clue of where I needed to go.

I had a play on the new chapters last night and rather enjoyed it!
The odd enemy seems a bit spongy, but I guess that could be said about a number of other games.

Great to see Nightdive and co working on these older titles.

I'm very tempted to play this as I have never played the original but I'm sure the original or a Doom mod is available to play on VR - doom is so good on VR!

I played through the first episode of Heretic. Nightdive have done a great job with the remaster, but the game itself just doesn't hold up. I don't think there's one big thing that makes it feel so much weaker than Doom, rather a combination of little things: the weedy visuals and sounds for the weapons; the enemies that lack the charisma of Doom's (and the distinctive sounds), the more utilitarian UI, the overly-fussy map design.

It did emphasise to me just what a miraculous convergence of design and technology Doom and Doom 2 were, so I went back and played through the back end of Nightdive's Doom 2 remaster, which I started but didn't finish last year.

Well I'm happy they've done this, what a nice surprise.

I remember playing the demo for one of these on the PS1 way back when (I can't remember which one it was) and I quite enjoyed it.

Yeah. Remember spending weeks playing the n64 version and would spedn hours at a time aimlessly wandering around but at least you get help in the remaster
They've added massive markets on the automap for keys, even if they're outside the area you've already explored. That helps a little. It's still often highly obtuse, though. It makes me realise how good the level design in Doom and Doom 2 was at subtly signposting things for the player. There's only really one level there (Doom 2 mission 19: "The Citadel") which is Heretic-levels of obscure.

Also on GOG.

Free if you already own the originals.
I am almost certain I used to own heretic and hexen back in the day (I certainly completed them.... superb games that I enjoyed far more than doom). IF I could dig out the old install disks how do you use them to get the remasters ?
