Competitor apparently going bump

Yeah I used Watford Electronics before.

Man Amazon have a lot to answer for, people dont realise how much damage they have done, "its convenient though bruv"

yeyeyeyye.................

Trouble is as Amazon is such a massive company and making so much money they are able to undercut people like OCuk on certain products, 2 items I just brough off Amazon I checked the price on OCuk and it worked out £15 cheaper to buy them from Amazon, same day delivery and they make it easy for returns, sorry OCuk but in this day and age every penny counts.

It's faster shipping, better support, and cheaper. Shops need to offer something more to compete.

Yea I get it, I really do.

But I can say with honesty I'd still try OCUK, if it were a like for like id at least go to OCUK first show them the link to see if they can match.

For most other things I use eBay or go to websites like B&Q ir Argos or whatever, and even if it does work out a tiny bit more, I'll use them instead.

I'm not gonna lie, I still do buy things from Amazon now and then but very little, I'll spend less than £200 a year there.

Dont get me wrong, im not going to abandon OCuk, I just brought a Power Colour 9070 for my Mrs and a Power Colour 9070XT for myself from them, I buy all my expensive goods from them, I use them for all my water cooling parts, I dont even shop around for things like that, their biggest competitor in water cooling UK parts (hint) are the slowest shippers in the world and extremely over priced for shipping, I cant remember the last time I brought anything from that company, I do spend a lot at amazon, but they do also sell a lot of Chinese junk too and a lot of fake goods too especially in the SD card, USB stick field, so you do have to be mindful, as an example ive just been through 6 sets of wireless earbuds from them before I finally got a pair that speak english too me and I can use as a hands free kit and actually hear what the other person is saying without either being way too quite or sounding like they are speaking through an empty tin of beans.

The CPU coolers I'm looking at currently seem cheaper on OCUK, seems to be one of those things - some items are cheaper here, some are cheaper there - for those buying the bits to build a PC... they may pay a bit extra for one item but find another item is cheaper - so in the long run it levels itself out and that's probably why they don't copy each-others prices with every time I guess.

Holy crap! I did not know they went bust until I read the news on widget 1 hour ago.

Absolutely shocked to discovered UK second largest PC retailer went in administration, I ordered Xbox and Playstation 5 wireless controllers for my PC back from it back in January 2025. I cant log in my account, guessed I was customer with them for 24 years.

I googled why they went in administration found out their turnover in end 2023 was £136.5M which was huge declined compared to £241M in 2021, they owed creditors £33M included £324,000 property rent. The property owner issued winding up petition against the company that saw the end of UK second largest PC retailer.

Overclockers UK now took former competitor place to became UK second largest PC retailer so there are only just 2 largest PC retailers left to compete each other in UK today. :)

There isn’t really just 2 big PC retailers.

Most people buy a prebuilt from an SI and the biggest retailer is likely the place which sells everything and not the two dedicated custom PC stores.

Eek. Just catching up on this I did use frequently over the years. But agree, more competition is a positive for the consumer.

Tbf dabs were absolutely great in the 90s. Used to get a lot of stuff from them. Watford Electronics as well.
Ah I had lots of stuff from dabs too. What a massive shame, wished dabs never sold company to dumb BT in 2006 who ruined it decided to changed name to BT Shop in 2016 but unfortunately business went downhill lost lots of dabs customers and BT decided to changed name again to EE Shop in 2023 still failed to achieved same success as dabs did.

I had a few things from Watford Electronics since 90s, it was sad they went bust in 2007 with £3.5M debts then a company acquired assets decided to change the brand to Savastore then later Saverstore. What a dumb name, they should used Watford Electronics brand name so it was a shame they went bust in 2017 owed unpaid property rents.

I am not talk about multi-national or high street or out of town retailers like Amazon, Argos, Currys etc.

I am talk about UK independence PC retailers! Overclockers UK and the other largest competitor are the only 2 retailers selling full range of graphics cards, CPUs etc.

I rememebered all UK independence PC retailers names over the last 30 years. 14 Overclockers UK competitors went bust over the last 8 years so there are not many left only just a few left now. I checked endole found 3 Overclockers UK competitors has low cash in bank and high debt ratio 65%, 70% and 71%, they could go bust in the next few years likely unpaid property debts.

There are other large retailers, some are only B2B though and ship very high volumes of brands like HP, Dell, Cisco etc.
I think I know who you talk about but there are no other large retailers. I had lots of stuffs like CPU, power supply, graphics cards, tablet from that company until 2005.

I checked endole and I was really very surprised the company turnover in 2023 was £486.53M, I checked their website found out they no longer selling PC components and they are no longer an independence UK PC retailer but became IT/Solutions Integrator/technology provider/specialists.
