General Filament Chat

So, after a great run of Sunlu PLA+2.0 being absolutely amazing I have had nothing but trouble with the lest 4 or so rolls. Some are different colours which historically can be a factor. However I noticed some differences. which tells me it is due to stock and batches. Some were on the old v2 spools, some the new v3 spools. I also noticed that some spools the filament was on the cardboard tube with the spool over it whereas some were not and just terminated into the spool, I assume this is a newer one. By the time I noticed I can discern for sure the pattern but I suspect the stuff I bought direct to be the better one and the later Amazon purchases to be older/mixed batches. Shame its put me right off sunlu for a moment. Will wait until it settles down post sale and try another roll direct

Have been using their PETG. They're not moving to cardboard spools are they?!
The plastic ones are reusable.... or would be if they sold refills for them. Worst case they recycle. The cardboard ones are just a pain in an AMS.

If you struggle with cardboard spools, have you seen the rings that go around the outside, they can help, but some spools are different sizes so don't always fit and cane make them too tall to sit in the AMS

That's exactly the problem - it often makes them either too wide or too tall. I've got one spool at the moment that I thought it'd be a genious idea to break off the cardboard and put it on a reusable spool. Genius idea it may have been...had I bothered to check the core dimension and the width first! *facepalm*

Apologies, no they are on plastic spools. Thew newer V3 is larger and bambu roll and ams compatible. The V2 less so without an adaptor. I noticed though inside the spool some filament was on a cardboard tube in the plastic spool whereas newer ones were not and terminated into the spool, likely so it plays nice with the ams

Just got a spool of Sunlu PETG and it's still plastic but has a cardboard core. Printing nicely from an AMS so not an issue...well almost not an issue. I'd intended it to continue from a spool of grey Sunlu PETG that's only got 250-300g left and needs 400 for the print. Trouble is, this one is grey PETG...and the original is high-speed matt PETG. What really add insult to injury though is that the Rapid variety is a quid cheaper too. *facepalm* I think I've hit a critical mass of stupid mistakes and should just stop doing anything for a while

I know the feeling. I've bulk bought a load of bambu for the moment as Sunlu went out of stock, add in the issues and the bambu worked out more or less the same price

You could try Tinmorry - had a spool and it was definitely red. Fairly well behaved if not wet. There's Jayo which is cheap currently - no idea how good or what shade...but it's cheap! :D Reviews are quite good too.

I would like to dedicate the next scream to "The Filament" "ReFill PLA".
I thought I was doing my part buying a refill.
except it doesn't fit the standard refill spools. doesn't fit the one the supplier suggests and doesn't bloody stick to the bed!

There is a sale at a popular retailer for Creality filament dryers. The Dryer Box Pro is £41 and the Space Pi dryer is £53. Grabbed the former as that is what I use at work. It'll be coming tomorrow.

Also I see Bambu have a flash sale on the 19th for certain items due to their new printer coming out. Looks like the PLA Beginners pack will be £50 for 4x 1kg spools so I'll probably grab that even though I've just taken delivery of 4x spools from them today!

I'll keep an eye on that and see if there is a sale, I've got plenty of filament atm but more never hurts...

Does anyone find Jayo a bit 'gunky'. My poop shoot has blocked up a couple of times because the poops are all melting together and the only think I can think of is I've recently started using come Jayo?

I’ve been using Jayo PETG and it’s been perfectly fine. The only issue for me is that the colours are a bit weak ie red turns out more orange than red

Thanks, suppose it could be the heat in general as it's been warm and the room the printer is in (my office) can be a bit stuffy during this weather.

Mines isn't cranked as much as I'd like as my cat is an idiot and may jump out.

Also slightly worried about humidity but not sure if that's over thinking.
Ditto on the cat! When it’s as warm as this I don’t think humidity is an issue. It does help that I have an AMS which has sachets of silica gel inside. According to the internal readings, humidity is only 22% which no doubt helps. Having said that when using my old non AMS printer, I often had the window wide open while in the room and all was well
