I can see why, the amount of cheap Temu/AliExpress battery packs out there which do run the risk of going up in a stinky cloud of lithium smoke!

But certainly annoying when you have a Steam Deck and want reliable power for a long haul flight :(

Virtually all long haul flights have USB sockets on each seat anyway, so I dont really see the need for a power bank
 
Good, terrifying all these cheap batteries on a plane.
Recently a friend of mine was _that guy_ on a flight. His battery pack started smoking and then flames started shooting out. It was a flight to Vancouver, and they were over the turndra, so zero chance of landing anywhere. The attendents got their special kit out and asked the passengers for any bottled water they had to help quell the flames while it ran it's course.
It wasn't a cheap pack, but he said it was fairly old and had started keeping noticably less of a charge.

Any decently made li-ion based power bank/pack shouldn't really ignite even from age unless damaged, though a small chance it was produced with some damage. Some of the cheaper ones though don't have sufficient protection from over charging or discharging which can cause a fire risk.
 
As long as it can go in my suitcase I'm not bothered.
I bought mine off @subbytna so I'd be upset if it caught fire :)

Never been allowed.

Quite annoying, I travel a lot for work and they are very handy to have in the bag.

Though im not sure how they are going to police this? Are they going to check everyone's bags? Without all airlines banning them and security removing them at the scanners.

hmm.. will airlines like Ryanair be making any changes? Recently went to a festival and took 3 powerbanks in my cabin baggage. Didn't use them on the plane though.

It would be good if airlines would place USB C sockets by the seats

all the flights i have been on in the last 2 years (flights could range from 2 hours, 2 and half hours 3 hours, 3 and a half hours) with British airways and SAS (scandic) flights, who generally use Airbus a320s and the newer neo models

still only have USB type A connectors

Flew with them in July and their current rules are under 100Wh and the power bank must stay with you when in use - no charging from it in a bag in the overhead lockers.
 
Been on a couple of long haul planes recently (very modern ones) where it was announced that the onboard USB sockets were for media use only and not to be used for charging

Same in trains. Limited power with USB-A, though does stop an iPhone from discharging or at best very very slowly charges it. I can’t imagine something like a handheld console through, I doubt that help much.

Not the trains i usually go on

First great western have 3 Pin UK sockets under the seats and also USB sockets (although i cant remember what type of USB they have, as usually i just plug my UK plug in) . Although granted you wouldnt be able to get that on airlines.


Its annoying as on aircraft they "assume" that the one end of the cable that usually plugs in to your 3 pin plug is type USB-A and the other end which goes in to your device is the spepcific type (be it iphone type or USB C)

However on my charger the end that goes in to my UK plug and the end that goes in to my device is USB-C at both ends.

Its not just external battery packs. That is why most laptops have an internal <100Wh battery otherwise they cannot be shipped via air. When they are shipped via air from the far east, unless they are fully built, come with the battery disconnected.
 
Many flights I've been on USB ports don't work, they are USB A or the charge is slow. Only maintaining the battery at its same level.

I always keep my battery pack with me for these reasons.

This is true also

out of the 5-6 flights iv been on in the last 2 years, about 30% of those flights either the USB port i was usng, or the person next to me used, did not work
