iRacing

It's been quite an enjoyable journey so far.

Formula - Licence D. Mainly on the 1600. Started the F4 and had a few decent races and then realised it's absolute carnage. I've been advised by a friend to jump it for F3. Currently sat on SR of 3+.

Sports car - Licence D. I'm now going to jump back on this and aim to get it to SR 3+. In formula because of the limited car choices - that pathway is clearer. 1600 -> F4 -> F3 .

I'm not so sure on a step-wise pathway through this division. Any advice with cars and leagues? There's quite a choice. What would you advise to be the natural step up from a M2? Any tracks or specific events to avoid?

I've been mainly focusing on improving my race craft. Watching replays to see what went wrong esp when receiving incident points.

@Buddy

There is so many different approaches, it ultimately comes down I think to what you enjoy. It is possible to turn iRacing into a bit of a chore.

I personally feel the best approach is to focus on one sports car (MX5/GT4) and one open wheel car (FF1600/F4) with a main series for each. You can then do the odd event in another series/special event that uses one of those.

Budget is a major factor too.

F4 is carnage for sure, but it can help with Racecraft/Learning how to Survive.

Hello.
I've been at sim racing/ iracing for a number of months now. Very much a beginner driver in the mx5. I'm still battling in AI races as I'm learning trail braking etc. It quite a lonely game, I presume until I get into racing with real people. Are there any groups that make things a bit more social?

Try a few discord groups they are generally quite friendly places to interact in

Check out the MX5 Deep Dive discord, good community, lots of information, setups, guides and discussion specifically on the MX5. Probably the best place to learn how to drive it properly.

You'll probably need to paste that link into discord via 'add new server' as clicking on it in a browser doesn't seem to work for me.

Here is a good gudie on the MX5 as well

Momentum is king, the number one reason for people being slow in Mx5 is braking too heavily and scrubbing off all momentum.

Thanks for the suggestions, taken onboard. Did my first iracing race recently and enjoyed it; quite different to racing AI. I'm understanding what you mean about momentum. Its struggle to not slow too much through initial braking and then trail braking, without dribbling around a corner.

Got the year subscription when it went on sale. Yet to boot it up as going through a rig rebuild.
What seats are everyone using?
Got a good deal on a second hand NLR track frame but the Ford fusion seat I’ve been using might not be compatible
Hoping to keep it around £200-250 if possible.

Cobra Imola GT. Comfy and a good fit for me. The material is also good for my sweaty body as well. It was on sale when I got it but was quite an extravagant purchase. Buy once, cry once and all that.

I'm pretty happy that I'm up to 10 wins in 2025 so far, better than 2024 already. My iRating is slowly creeping up again since I got my rig. I definitely feel more confident and consistent compared to being at my desk. Hoping to push to 2k iRating in both Sports and Formula in the next 6 months, that's my goal.

Appreciate the recommendation guys. Not sure how I feel spending more money on the seat itself compared to the wheelbase + rig combined :D
Will see if I can source any used local ones

As long as you can finish a lap, just hop into a race. There's tons of low rating people, there'll be some carnage once in a while, but it's so fun, and racing against other people will give you a feeling that the A.I can't match. A competitive satisfaction that is so, so hard to get recreationally as an adult. The voice chat is incredibly easy to use, just press your keybind and talk. I race in a quest 3 and didn't even know it had a mic until I tried talking into it

It's very easy, just join a fixed setting miata/ff1600/vee race. It'll give you a bit of practice time, then 2 qualifying laps, then a 15? 20? minute race? I can't quite remember.

Or just join practice sessions, and you can voice chat with people as you do laps, and see how your times match up, see what you need.

Other than people with spanish names who think they're aryton senna reborn, people generally race clean and realistically, nobody wants to lose safety rating or take a (temp) ban.

Signing up for a race without knowing there was a new UI in VR was a big mistake. Settings are all over the shop.

Have had to uninstall OpenXR to get it working with the Reverb G2. Can't seem to get foveated rendering working correctly.
