Meta news

Not great news but I'm not overly concerned tbh, I think we all knew that VR/MR wasn't making them money at the moment, and afaik there are job losses going on throughout Meta, not just in Reality Labs. Every year they cull the "underperformers" as they call them.

The whole gaming industry is undergoing a massive contraction. Many companies over-hired during covid when people were stuck home and couldn't do much except play games and watch netflix, and now the market isn't big enough to support all those staff unfortunately.

As VR is more niche and less profitable you'll see lots of this in VR too unfortunately.

On the plus there's quite a few headsets getting traction e.g bigscreen2.

Outside gaming, I'd love a headset that is a little like the xreal but with a little more grunt and the interactivity of the quest with hand gestures for productivity.

I'm regularly on the move at work and when at a stationary workstation often have 2 screens. I'd love the ability to be able to open my laptop anywhere - connect/plug instantly with my glasses and have multiple screens.

Hell have the Bluetooth capability with your phone.

Honestly imagine if this could be offered for sub £200. It would sell easily to businesses alone. Build up a baseline of income here. Generate an r&d department of the back of this and offer more premium options / venturing into gaming.

Yep this affects me directly, some users of my app use Mobile VR Station to install it as they don't have a PC, soon they'll no longer be able to do so. There are quite a lot of Quest users with no access to a PC. No way, especially now, am I putting my app on the Meta Store, I'm going off Meta rather quickly :(

i saw that news and didnt know if it would effect you Tykey,i guess the question is, is there a way you can include a self updater?
api call to get secret user/pw/download link program downloads update?

but agree meta are rapidly loosing confidence from the devs and user base.
it could be why devs are migrating apps to pc store maybe a bit more?

Lashing of new features in V81 PTC. How many of these will kill the headset?

Version 81.0 Public Test Channel (PTC) week of August 25, 2025

These features and enhancements will become available starting the week of August 25, 2025 and will be pushed to people who are enrolled in the Public Test Channel.

New updates to Immersive Home

With the v81 release, we're excited to introduce new updates to the way you experience home in Meta Horizon. Immersive Home gets a visual refresh with new scenery that’s easily accessible by pressing the left menu button. However, with this update, you will no longer have access to their previous home environments due to incompatibility with the enhanced functionality of v81, specifically, the larger Immersive Home footprint with more areas you can navigate, interact with, and customize.

New Horizon Central

The new Horizon Central brings a completely new experience. It offers higher concurrency, faster travel, and a larger, more detailed environment. Additionally, Horizon Central now features a store where you can discover and try-on clothing from our top creators , as well as a new Arena to enjoy concerts, comedy shows, and NBA games.

A new Arena

A new immersive and realistic events space, where you’ll get the best seat in the house, whether you're joining from across the street or across the globe. The Horizon Arena brings you closer to the action and your favorite artists, comedians and sports team for truly personal and unforgettable events.

New updates to Passthrough

We’re introducing new features for the Passthrough Home experience. One key feature is App Pinning, which lets you pin your favorite windowed apps directly in Passthrough. Simply open the app while in Passthrough, position it where it’s most convenient, and select the “Pin” option on the app’s control bar. Additionally, for the first time, you can place objects in Passthrough which are accessible from the menu button on the left controller. We’re starting with the Avatar Mirror to check your look and the portal to Horizon Central for easy access.

Navigator update

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve the experience, starting with v81, we’re making the Universal Menu the default navigation for most people to keep things simple and familiar. While we continue to experiment and improve Navigator, it’s still available! You can turn it on anytime in the advanced settings.

Improved Meta AI Logic

We’ve updated how Meta AI navigates within Horizon OS so that it is more accurate and is better able to guess what you want it to do. For example, when you say “It’s too loud”, Meta AI will turn down the volume, and you can ask it to “go back” if you prefer the previous volume. Meta AI is also better at constructing browser URLs, so you can ask it to open specific pages on websites, like “search for AA batteries on Amazon”, or “open the imdb page for Chris Hemsworth”. You can enable Meta AI by going to Settings > Advanced and turning on Meta AI to try out these improvements.

This marks the broader evolution of Horizon OS, with many more exciting developments planned for the future.
