Numerous supermarkets now have a cctv at the self checkout. But When I look at the monitor in front of the checkout it only shows the face.
What about the hands, which are used to steal items; that is not visible on the monitor.
Furthermore, is a thief really going to use the self checkout?

Some view from above as well for the product checking, you don't get to see that.
Also yes people will use them to steal.

It's mainly a deterrent (like the cardboard policemen) and if you do a runner without paying they'll have your face on camera.

So, do they have Face Recognition installed, that can identify the person? I assumed only the police had this device.

Morrisons use them to see if you've paid and then the automatic gates at the exit of the self checkout will open using their cameras.

Not bought anything and cutting through the self checkouts to leave? The gate won't open and the staff member uses a button to open it.

Pay for a few goods and the camera on the checkout sees you? You can walk right out.

A think a thief is just going to put on a balaclava and take what they want these days. Security guards aren't allowed to touch them, police don't really care or respond quick enough to do anything.

I watched a youtube short earlier where a guy just walked into a shop, picked something up from a chiiled section, opened it and started eating it as he walked out. When challenged he just said 'I do what I want' and off he went.
I'm not sure there's much hope.

they probably have cams in the ceiling.

At morrisons I use the checkout nearly always says "camera active" even when the shops almost dead and the security guard has seen me like 100 times and knows I don't steal..

It's age verification.

At my local Tesco express, the video is displayed at the manned till where the cashier is alerted and age manually verified. In other supermarkets, there is no camera and someone walks over, looks you up and down then enters a code in the terminal.

On a few occasions I've had to wait for serval minutes and abandoned my shopping. The self-serve tills are supposed to make your shopping quicker.
