Vince's Repair Thread - (Console Repairs & Mods)

Hi Vince I have an old Linux tablet thing that has the kind of textured plastic that gets sticky as it ages and it's now quite old. Is there any way to get rid of the stickiness? Hoping you've come across this in your usual experience! Pink Stuff didn't work lol

Fairly sure isopropyl alcohol and lots of elbow grease is the way. You basically need to remove all the sticky residue, and something like isopropyl should dissolve it.

Is it the rubber coating thats went sticky ?
I had a similar problem with a bit of gear and used Methylated spirits which worked well.

I mind this video was helpfull -

Just bought an original XBox off of eBay and i'm wondering if anyone her could help.

I've been told to change capacitors but when looking online there seem to be different kinds. I've yet to receive this console so i'm not sure what revision this is - could anyone help with where to look?

Doesn't show all capacitors being replaced, but just the clock capacitor, and there is also a link in the description to confirm the revision.
**Edit**

Don't cheap out on capacitors, not least from Asia. They're readily available here and aren't expensive, don't even buy the cheapest UK ones TBH.

It's ok if you go through a few orders to buy a load for multiple jobs but if doing a single long term repair, I'd order the right bits directly from somewhere reliable.

@Vince looking at getting my boy a 3ds to play while in queues at theme parks (smaller and more robust than a switch or his tablet)

The consoles are getting on a bit now, so just wondering if there is anything I should look out for or recommend a decent place to get it from? I've seen some jap imports that seem to be better condition than most UK ones, but will I run into issues running games?

Spilt a whole glass of squash over my Switch 2 Pro COntroller (did a bit before but didn't do any harm after a little ipa clean around shoulder button).

The Switch then defaulted audio to the controller (thinks headphone plugged in) and there were random inputs going on everywhere. So I took a punt on disassembling it all and giving an IPA bath for about 20m, left it about 6h to dry. Reassembled and it's all working and more importantly, the buttons all feel the same! A rare success for me lol. Was a very annoying process.
Probably should have removed the analogue sticks as IPA isn't great for rubber but figured what’s the worst that can happen as I had no confidence in my ability to fix it anyway, saved £75 :)

@Vince Hey pal, forgot to reach back out to you as I've got a lot of stuff going on this year but I was wondering if you'd be able to sort my elite series 2 pad out? It's been quite a while since I used it as it developed buttons needing a double press register. I believe it was the should buttons now. Any other improvements that could be done would be great, would be more than happy to pay for your time.

I have 3 official Xbox controllers suffering from drift, as well as a 3rd party one. I also have two Venom charging stations that no longer work... Any chance you'd be able to have a look at these for me please?

I've also got two DS4s that I no longer need (feel free to keep them). I don't think they have drift, but they may have charging issues (I genuinely don't remember).

My junior at work has just messaged saying he wants to swap his disc drive in a fat PS2. He's going to order a part and bring it to work this week, love to see it :)

I think there are a couple of recommends in the thread.
As with all tools buy the best one you can afford. Temperature controlled is a good idea, as is easy to get hold of tip replacements.
