GP Letter for new job - Stressing me out

Hi all,

In Feb, I unexpectedly lost my job. I am not one for being out of work, and in the past have only been out of work for a few weeks due to transitioning to a new job.

It has taken me over 5 months to get offered a new position, which I was thrilled about.

Here is where the drama starts. I finally receive the conditional written offer, went through the usual onboarding stuff on their new starter portal, however, a passed medical was one of the conditions on the offer (with the normal references and other checks).

I attended the medical, which was undertaken by a third party. I passed everything, from drugs/alcohol/hearing/eye sight/fitness/balance and all sorts. As I mentioned I was on anti depressant tablets for 6 months last year due to the loss of my father, she only put the medical as a temporary 2 month pass. She gave me a GP request letter and told me I needed to get my GP to confirm the tablets, even though I no longer take them. She said this would not impact my ability to start straight away.

I called the GP, was told they can do it for £20. Attended the surgery gave them the letter and was told by a staff member that this will actually be free. So handed them the letter. I chased this a week later and they couldnt even find it!! I went down and they then told me I had to pay £40 for it to be done. I paid and walked out a bit angry.

Now my new employer have stalled my start date, as all this seems to have created a grey area for them apparently. They said they can't start me on a temporary passed medical, because what if the GP comes back to say the information I provided is false for example. Also, they said there is a safety course I need to attend during my induction. But I can only be accepted onto this with a fully passed medical.

They have now told me I can not start without the medical provider confirming the GP letter and changing my medical to a full pass. My start date has now been pushed back until September 1st, to allow my GP time to sort this letter.

I am so stressed out, I am in a financial mess, more waiting now and very stressed that the GP won't send this letter in time and my offer will end up getting retracted and I lose this job. I have called the GP countless times and all they say is they can't guarantee the timeframe of the GP letter, so I am totally at their mercy right now.

Has anyone else been in a situation like this, is there anything else I can try? Maybe if I actually booked an appointment with the GP for stress and explain it to them, maybe they can use our appointment time to write the darn letter there and then!!

Not been in the same mess as you have right now, but have dealt with companies who undertake these medical checks before/ongoing during employment.
Sorry it is causing so much stress right now.

But yeah you're only option is to keep on going back at your GP, may be it is worth trying to get an appointment to force a hand and get it done there and then. They are the reason stopping you from going/returning to work right now.

Update - I finally had the GP call and send the note off. I got a copy from NHS app and called the medical provider myself who confirmed it's been amended to a full pass and has been sent back to my new employer.

Can finally relax a bit now.

Just waiting on them to finally confirm Sept 1st start date, hurray!

If you are still stressed financially, might be seeing if new employer do a salary advance after you start.

Most good / bigger employers will be able to

In the interview why ask them why don't they have the facilities to manage in house medical tests, or is it pawning off responsibility and having to some actual work?
To be honest, I've been in FM for most of my career and never had to go through a medical like this. My last job in healthcare (hospice) I had a medical but it was a 10 min phone call and certain jabs from an infection prevention POV. I've never come across anyone who does medicals in house.

Why would a head office management job require a medical?

Because of the dangerous environment I would be around. I do understand why they do it, but how it's impacted the whole process has been poor.

Then I'd bring up the issues you've had and suggest they provide in house medical tests.

To pawn it off to new applicants, to go to their own doctors (at their expensive) doesn't sound professional.

Several companies now are expecting applicants to provide their own DBS check. LOL

My partner had to provide and pay for her own DBS, really poor!
