Ok i'll confess i'm super out the loop. Thinking about updating the system since having some kids derailed a lot of time which was going in to building custom case etc... I'm thinking about bumping from my current 5950x to 9800x3d. I'm so out of touch with things but thinking of ordering the following DDR5:

Probable motherboard Strix 870 F.

Opinions please, I've had Team Group before found it to be pretty solid, currently using said kit on my 5950x/Formula VIII. If its of any importance GPU is a 3090, PSU 1200w Thor, primary use daily work, gaming and occasional CAD/Graphic design.

Appreciate any swift links to comparisons or any recommendations.

Cheers,

Cheers,

want to go for CAS30 for AM5 Ryzens tbh

c38 at 8000 is technically less than c30 at 6000

Anything above ddr5-6000 (6400 if lucky) requires running memory controller in 1:2 mode. At 8000 it could be synced with inifinity fabric at 2000.
Meaning ddr5-8000 could be tuned to pretty low latency together with obviously high bandwidth

But should be warned that getting DDR5-8000 to run on AM5 is not guaranteed and will probably need manually setting timings and/or voltages. And needs a good motherboard (which Strix should be)
Alternatively dropping speed, at which point a regular ddr5-6000 is better. Besides 9800X3D is pretty indifferent to memory latency anyway.

I suggest you only go this route if you enjoy fiddling with memory settings. Very low likelyhood it will just work with turning on XMP.

Interesting- thanks for the quick info.

Does anyone enjoy getting memory stable? lol… I’m tempted but actually it occurred to me to check with the latency as you mentioned I’ll do some reading for sure.

With the 9800X3D, you'd get better value buying Crucial's basic 48GB kit for ~£100 and putting the other £100 into the graphics card.

Note that for heavily multithreaded work, this would not really be an upgrade.

£100 is irrelevant for GPU upgrade on a 3090 hehe. I can see some decent kits some CL26 so assuming this is the aim to tighten the timings on 6-6.2k…

Too old for memory stability testing, it's so boring. I went for 2x32GB of 6000/C30, dialled in Buildzoid timings and called it a day.

The cost to benefit of the C28/C26 kits isnt there unless youre chasing benchmarks.

X3D chips really aren't all that sensitive to that sort of thing, you're spending a lot more for little to no gain.

A £80 32gb set would be more than adequate, the much cheaper 48gb set mentioned by Tetras would also be fine.

I might do the same but will have a more detailed look if I can squeeze the timings for a little more cash all good…

I understand it’s a boring task been there done that just fell off the game a little :)

Appreciate the comment need to think about whether I even need 48GB but since I’ll be updating a lot less than previously might be a nice idea

Ordered the goodies :)

In the end opted for this:

Fully aware could have gone a little cheaper but I like the style, bigger heatspreader, nicer timings, theoretical better memory chips. Motherboard in the end:

Back in the annoying memory clocking club lol! Thanks for the swift comments was very helpful encouraged me to try and remember where to look for info :D

just wanted to say thanks for the post, answered some of my questions here which is great.

I almost bought 96gig if CAS40 this morning and watched a few videos and people saying anything above 32gb is pointless for gaming.

Do you agree with this?

i have just ordered a 9800x3d myself.

im still stuck on memory and a motherboard.

Absolutely agree 32GB should be enough for games still even as they advance. Looking through a ton of DDR5 and posts seems as highlighted above 6,000 CL30 is about the spot to be. Plenty of options, I picked a little more expensive than required and what was in stock immediately. What the guys above mentioned is absolutely spot on having looked in to it so thanks also to them… Ultimately memory is a cheap upgrade and sell in future if you needed more.

Not sure your budget but the other Strix seemed a decent buy but went out of stock. There is cashback from ASUS also - worth admitting I’ve ALWAYS had ASUS boards hence my choice but I know many highly rate some Gigabyte and MSI options. Board depends on your requirements also, I’m going to be overclocking and tinkering so went for the higher spec/power board (I really wanted another Apex but it’s £££)

Depends on the game

DCS needs more than one gigabyte of ram to be sufficient

watched many videos this evening. Had an idea this morning ive completely changed that view now.

looking at a for a combine price of £280

GIGABYTE B850 AORUS ELITE and CORSAIR VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL30

Are you looking to run 2 different kits of that RAM? It won’t work well if you are.

DDR5 runs best in 2 DIMM only configs for now.
