PC Upgrade £1500-£2000

Thanks pastymuncher.

I have just checked the Noctua site and my cooler is not compatible with the Aorus and and needs to be mounted to offset on the Eagle board. Any other cooler you all recommend? Been happy with my Noctua so should I get a compatible model?

The Eagle is nothing special, I'd go for any B850/X870/B650E board that meets your needs in terms of M.2 slots, WIFI/LAN and USB ports.

ASRock is a bit dodgy at the moment with reported issues running X3D CPUs, but other than that, I don't know of any to avoid.

Perfect, I’ll go with your recommendation then. No issues with fitting the Aorus board with the ram you chose that you know of, or blocking any card slots? Thanks for your help!!

With DDR5, you don't really want to be filling all the memory slots unless you can help it. The peerless assassin can have the fan lifted up a bit if necessary, to clear taller RAM.

In terms of other compatibility issues with the motherboard heatsinks or the graphics slot, I don't know I'm afraid.

No problem, thanks Tetras. Do you know what OCUK are like to deal with if there's a spacing clash with the components once purchased/ opened?
I think they usually advise you prior to the build if there's incompatibility with what you chose, but that's just going by what posters have said on here.

If you are doing the build yourself, I don't know.

From what I can see on the website terms, you need to get the return done within 2 weeks if opened and they reserve the right to charge you, if they think handling was unreasonable or has harmed the value of the product.

I'd say a fair number of coolers and motherboard boxes are not sealed anymore, but many coolers do come with pre-installed paste rather than a tube.

I guess what I'm saying is, you'd be better off just doing a quick test run of the fit, without breaking any seals/labels if possible.

Instead of the Peerless Assassin you could get the Thermalright Royal Knight SE120 which is just £23 at the moment (available elsewhere). It has a thinner front fan (15mm) and front tower and both towers are offset so that the cooler does not interfere with ram of any size. Due to the thinner front fan and tower I would expect performance to be slighty worse than the Peerless Assassin but still very good.

I use a arctic freezer 36 on my 9800x3d...again, smaller(single tower) and doesn't reach the ram slots...works fine (it can keep a 14900k cool so having no issue with the 9800x3d)...arctic put their prices up at mo though. £30 for non rgb, £37 with...used to be £23 and £30 so not such good value as before..the way the fans attach to the cooler though makes it nice and easy

Thanks all, think I’ll order the peerless assassin and swap it out for one of the others mentioned if it doesn’t fit. Just need to pick a mobo now. Any problems going with the x870 Aorus over the others mentioned ? Hopefully going to order on the weekend. TIA

If you go for the Peerless Assassin you will have to raise the front fan so it sit's over the memory, I know this because I have one and had to do that but it does not affect the performance. As I said earlier, the Thermalright Royal Knight SE120 has no problems with memory and is cheaper with free delivery elsewhere.

Thanks PM. Any knowledge on the motherboards, is the 870 worth the upgrade over the 850? I’d like the setup to last a while so don’t mind stretching if I need to. Thanks.

Also, what ram are you using in the board. I’ll check the measurements to see if the ram I’m ordering is a lower profile.

It's in my siggy and standard size with no RGB so it's about as low as DDR5 gets. Before that it was Teamgroup DDR4 3600 mhz C14 8 Pack Edition which was also pretty low profile. The PA120 overhangs memory slots 1, 2 and 3. Here you can see how I had to raise the front fan to clear the memory (DDR4 build):-

I could have removed the extra bit's on top of the heat spreaders but I would have still had to raise the fan so I didn't see much point.
