Mountain Biking

It's where the speed magnet is placed that's the issue. If it's on the brake disc that's fine but if it's on the wheel then they've not made one for that (yet)
mines on the rotor, but I thought smart system used multiple ways to detect how fast your going etc, and eventually the limp mode will kick in at some point.
On the EMTB forums some was trying some custom magnet modification that affected how the reader pulses or some such.

on the 30 page thread over on emtbforums people are still talking about speedbox and stuff, I don't see anyone talking about the rotor mod.

I know what your talking about, it has some kind of gearing inside that moves the magnet or whatever so it only gets read half the time?

I tried a speedbox on my eeb and the motor failed not long after.

I also found i only ever really needed to go over 15mph with assistance on tarmac. Which is not that often.

im generally using mavity to go over that speed most of the time.

when i had a new motor i sold the speedbox and havent worried about the limit since.

still have bosch diagnostic installed btw
no idea what I can do with it without a login though.
kinda scared to change it to english and connect my bike, since theres probably no point.

probably wasn't anything to do with the speed box though, unless it changes how the watts output is calculated and it goes over limit when its not supposed to.

probably but im still nervous about it.

Done 500 miles on the new motor and the battery life is so much better. Again not sure if thats down to the new motor being more efficient or at higher speeds it draining the battery quicker.

Either way dont feel like im missing the speed.

motors are designed for 80-90 cadence anything below or above that is sub optimal for Miles per watt and likely bad for the motors lifespan.

I think updates improved battery usage over time too though, I used to get around 50-60miles on a flat ground range test when I first got the bike about 2 years ago(eco mode), now it seems like the battery draws a fair bit slower, (probably not now I have a 20mph limit though)
any sustained low cadence like 60 is likely a motor killer due to what happens to electric motors when they are under strain and high power draw. (if you have an old blender stick something inside it struggles with and listen to the bzzzzzzz, smell the burning and watch the smoke :)

Ah yeah I used to use that forum. The guy went OTT with his idea.
The Speedi works so well because it is simplified, no electronics at all. Just a small gear that allows the magnet to go round slower than the wheel by a set ratio, the bike thinks you're going 50% slower than you really are.
Quite a lot have it on the cube stereo hybrid fb group, don't think I've seen a single issue... I've had it myself a year and no problems.

Garmin finally giving us a DH move that only records descents and at 5hz.
Plus a time gate function.

I have the Edge MTB

Used it in downhill mode @dyfi bike park on the weekend. Mounted it on my toptube on the analogue bike and i have a stem mounted holder on my eeb. Seems to work very well. I mainly use it to record ride and upload to strava atm so i dont have to carry my phone.

A Video of me doing Racetrack in interesting conditions. I felt really good about this run, I still need to work out how to do the bigger jumps and some features at the start i had to go round as the guys Infront of me did. but I was confident enough to go as fast as a I could.

Some mild swearing in the video where I'm close to soiling myself. Last run of the day punctured my rear tyre so happy I was pushing myself.

Very impressive! If you want to push even further, look at getting some coaching/guiding at DYFI. Can highly recommend Becci Skelton - worth every penny you'll spend and them some.

Skelly will not let you down and she'll push you as hard as you want to be pushed and you'll come away with a new-found appreciation of both the trails and your riding skills.

So the mode works well and ignores all the uplift stuff.

Hoping to get to Dyfi one Thursday this month, fingers crossed the weather is better in a couple of weeks.

If you know how to use it.

I didnt know how to use downhill mode so i recorded everything as one run. I needed to tell it when im starting a run but i haven't set it up/worked out how to do that yet.

this is the first time i used downhill mode thinking it would do it all for me. It doesnt. Strava still picked up all the correct segments but garmin connect just shows 2 long rides.

I'm a bit of a noob with it and need to read the manual i think. But it does auto record descents in 5ghz.

There video suggests you just record the whole thing and it does the rest.
If you need to press any buttons that's pointless as that's what I've been doing up until now.

Maybe I’m doing something wrong.

On the map all of my activity is classified as “lift”. None of it as “run”.

So I must have done something wrong.

Was reading the review https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2025/06/garmins-new-edge-mtb-cycling-gps-review-hows-it-different.html

You need to tell it by a toggle when you are heading downhill and 5Ghz will appear top left, 1050 is also going to get it in a software update.

Edit Scrap that, the toggle is when in Enduro mode, got to the end and it mentions the automatic DH mode for when you are getting a uplift/chairlift does say it should work if you cycle back up aswell. Doesn't look like he tested that function

My 1050 has had it for a few weeks now. Just need to try it out.

I wonder if you should start it at the top.
I thought I had.

My day was split into 3 rides for some reason so i must have pressed something wrong.

First run down recorded ok. The rest did not.

Im annoyed as i was at dirt farm last week and intended to try it out there before the Dyfi trip. But I forgot to take it in my hurry to get there for the evening uplift start.

ahh well, will get used to it.
