This will be fine for a while (I've done this with the Quest Pro) but eventually you will have to enable updates as more recent games and game updates will require the latest firmware to run.

I've never had an update mishap, bits have fell off my Quest 3 (but only after I dropped it 
) I don't know how it's still going tbh, I have hammered it almost daily for over 18 months now. Meta have some good and bad points but on the whole I think they're a good force for VR and MR (imo).

The Google restrictions only apply to Android developers on phones that use Google Play Services.
Meta use an open source fork of Android and don't use that api/services. Of course that doesn't prevent Meta from implementing their own sideloading restrictions.
Meta already make it not that easy to non-techy folks to sideload apps. On my Play For Dream MR I don't need to do any of the shenanigans to sideload apps that I need to do on my Quest, such as setting up a dev account etc, and having to use 3rd party apps like Sidequest running on PC which in itself is several hoops to jump through to install, and you don't have a computer then no bueno. On my PFD I just download the apk, click install and that's it.

Count is as a blessing. If you disable them, you reduce VRAM usage by circa 2GB for PCVR.

Ah, the badge thing died when they downgraded the forum to a khorus supplied software package. The forum is almost unnavigable now. And you thought it was only headsets they could bork.

well not bad right! its only taken 5 years for me to receive the email!
The copy/paste support bots are all high-fiving themselves and smoking large celebratory cigars on a job well done. Pay rises all round.
They did have to find and deliver messages to a Lost Corpse. That's hard to do especially considering said Lost Corpse doesn't know where it is half the time!!
