Golf Thread

Went out for a casual round with my usual muppets, 8 and 12 handicap respectively. Not had a great year this year been fighting the lefts. Hurt my right shoulder at Volleyball training on Thursday so wasn't expecting sod all. Ended up firing an 82 today with 20-30 mph winds. 8 over through the front 4 over on the back. Hate this game!

Well my swing decided not to show up today and we lost our match on the 17th

The worse my swing got, the more I tried to just keep it in play as it was alternate shot so I didn't want to put my wife in too much trouble

We were giving 4 shots to our opponents and we got to the point of being 4 down with 6 to play. Somehow we fought back to 1 down with 2 to play, but giving a shot on 17 turned out to be the nail in our coffin as we couldn't match their score in that hole

Guess we need to wait until next year to try again

Some freakish scores in the last few weeks. Today, guy with a net 60 (11 under nett). Guy's handicap is 10. Impressive stuff!

For me -1 net in the medal today, bit of a mixed bag but some brilliant scrambling. Nice 2 as well on the par 3 10th, 6 iron to 3 inches

Spider ZT has been a game changer for me. My putting has been catastrophic this season until I picked it up, will need to crunch some numbers properly but I can't remember an equipment change that led to such an immediate improvement.

So he shot -1 scratch playing off 10....

These scores always seem insane to me. I'm 6 handicap and best ever round is +3 off the medal tees....Never wrapped my head round people in double digits shooting scratch under par.... Just seems unreal.

Yep and I checked later and there was a second net 60 from one of the later starters, guy was -2 scratch (69) playing off 9. Bonkers

The ground in the summer was like concrete. I shot a net 10 under by just hitting every fairway and seeing my 250 drives go 300+.. Left me mostly 7/8/9s in rather than a 4 or 5 that are going to end up being much wider dispersion.. If it's a good putting day, whilst not easily done, it happens.

Frustrating but it is what it is. Stupidly as I said before, the Stroke index's are so badly wrong at our place - So on holes SI 2 and SI 3 - he makes easy birdies, both for net eagles. They are both par 5's at around 500 yards.
SI 2 on our course is the easiest of the par 5's (hole 14 - 500y). There is a shorter par 5 at the 12th but you need to carry water for your second/third shot unless you nudge one around the corner of the lake. The 14th plays downhill and has no bunkers or water, the only risk is OB down the left but you need a really wild shot to end up in there.

Yeah - Council changed ours suddenly last year - no warning - just issued new cards with new SI's

I requested the information on how they came up with the new SI's etc - 2 FOI requests were made and they responded with a load of nonsense about not holding the data.... So I asked how if they don't hold the data can they then change the SI's etc - Another nonsense response was received....

It's a joke - Our 14th is 200 yard par 3 from the back tees - Miss right and your chipping from 20/25ft below the green level, miss left - deep rough, miss short - again chipping from 20/25ft below the green..... Reclassified from SI 3 to SI 17

Shortest iron you'll hit even downwind is probably 6i.... Most of the time it's hybrids/3 iron/4 iron..... Absolutely buzzing with a 3....

Yet - 15th is par 5, 500 yards mostly down wind, couple of bunkers and nothing else of danger. SI 3..... Joke.

Also - Ladies have complained - SI's for our course are the same for male and female.... How can that possibly be the case....

Had a lesson yesterday, focus was to have a much more vertical takeaway with a steeper shaft which then naturally moves the club shallow on the way down. Works quite well but it's the polar opposite to my normal inside takeaway over the top move; seeing good progress at the range trying to get rid of it, hand path is now consistently slightly above plane rather than looping massively over the top but the shaft is a lot shallower, if that makes sense? Gives me a nice little baby fade which seems to be my natural shape

Well the Scotty Cameron Studio Style Newport 2 Putter arrived today, I was a little disappointed with the packaging for such an expensive club it literally came in a plastic bag!

It is a lovely piece of metal very well machined and a huge advancement in putter from my Odyssey White Hot XG #1, which I hadn't realised I have had for nearly two decades.

Hopefully I will get out tomorrow to have a round with it.

Golf is a silly game. :p

Played over the weekend as usual and it was mostly pretty terrible.

Friday, 18 hole stableford at my local, 99 gross, 23 points.
Saturday, 18 holes fun at my local, only took 6 clubs (1i, 6i, 8i, PW, 56 degree and putter), 90 gross, 9 better than using a full set the day before cause why not.
Sunday, Society game at Shrivenham, 93 gross, ~25 points iirc.

Basically all of it was striking the ball 'ok' but poor decisions/bad bounces/duffed chips racking up way too many excess shots.

Then today I played Cumberwell Park for the networking meeting and shot 87 gross, 14 over, 40 points stableford for the win. Craziest bit looking at the Garmin stats is that my putting was kinda bad, 39 putts total, but just hitting a bunch of greens in reg.

No idea what changed though, makes no sense. Nice to put a good round together though, feels like it's been a while...

That is absolutely insane, the chance of a 10 handicap shooting under par is about 1 in every 2200 rounds. The fact that 2 of them have done it is not impossible, but that just screams sandbagger or bandit to me. I play off 9 and my best ever round is 76!!(par 71)

I wasn't planning on it, but playing tomorrow morning in a medal comp at my club. Regardless of my score, my handicap will be changing as it is a counting round that will be dropping off

Got a couple days off whilst my wife is away with a couple other ladies from the club, so I am off to play a couple courses with my usual playing partner

We are heading to Slaley Hall to play the Huntings course on Tuesday, not sure on Wednesday yet as he has got taxi duties in the morning, possibly Hartlepool or just our home course, then we are heading to Brancepeth Castle on Thursday as we haven't played there for quite a while

I played the hunting last Thursday in the Mizuno golf pairs. It's in pretty good nick, was 8 yards away from £10k for a hole in one. Ended up with a sleeve of balls instead, what a contrast  back there's 12th October for a 4 ball scramble.

The hunting is playing really well at the moment, have a good one!

What do you think of the mid size? Do you feel like it's got enough room? Is it the Stadry one?

Yeah, looking forward to it as long as the weather holds up

Today was a disappointing 82 (39/43) with a bad run of bogeys from 9 through to 12. Just couldn't get a putt to drop, but lost my head slightly on the last and finished with a double

My quick maths looks like my index will go up 0.1 to 6.6

Off to play Conway, Aberdovey and Royal St Davids this weekend on the West coast of Wales. The weather means it should be a true links golf experience! Just ordered some HLINK golf waterproofs as my 15yr old Galvin Green set seem to have shrunk in the wash over the years! :D Off out golf trolley shopping today, looking at Powakaddy CT6 EBS, don't need anything fancy as I've already got GPS and it fits the bill for folding down quite small.
