The usually plain and boring ride to work this morning was made a bit more painful when not 3 streets away from home someone flung open their door just as i was passing by.
Only thing i could do was try grab the brakes didn't do much slowing down as the door did that for me. Lucky I was not going to quick, few bumps on the bike and a few sore spots for me!
Driver dude was very apologetic, going to be sore tomorrow!

Hope you're back on your bike in no time. Just another thing cyclists need to be wary of around cars. I never ride in the door zone unless I can see a car is empty because it scares the hell out of me. If you're unlucky you will get doored and end up under the wheels of a car.

Worst part it was not even near the main road, was back on the bike and rode slower to work. Been down the same road this morning was right in the middle this time!
checking if parked cars were in fact empty

Sorry to hear. Had similar a few years back but as it was winter I was wearing a few more layers that helped take the impact

People need to get into the habit more of doing over the shoulder checks, even if not the reach, but a lot of people won't take responsibility themselves for things like that unless there is a gun to their head because people are stupid (until after a serious incident happens - oh then they'll be doing it every time aside from a small number of people who are too stupid to even learn from their actions and still blaming anyone else).

Have to say I always remember to do it in car parks, etc. where the risk is lower - for some reason the habit is drummed in there probably because it is where I normally am when parking - but I've found myself about to open the door when parked on the street sometimes before remembering at the last second.

I always do it and it's not actually bikes that are at the front of my mind. If you've had to park on a road with the passenger side against the curb, then you're potentially opening your door and getting out into the road where a car could be going past at 30-40mph. If you're parked with the flow of traffic then you're lucky to just lose the door, if you've parked against the flow of traffic then that door is scissoring your arm or leg, and that's highly likely to be an amputation. All for not looking at what you're stepping into.
