Car competitions anyone won?

But you said in your post you dont know why anyone bothers but it clear (as I posted a winner above) some people are winning cars etc?

Sure the owner are making money like you say but I dont care tbh aslong as I go in for a competition and its legit chance of winning.

Out of interest how do they actually get hold of these cars as there not cheap Mclaren and Porsche etc.
I'm not a gambler. Even if people win, I don't know why they bother. Gambling is only good at making other people rich. It's exploitative and destroys far more financial lives than it provides joy to a small few.

Owners sell their cars through the "competition" - I know this because I've been solicited a few times. They don't buy the car from you.

Fair one I feel you on the gambling, its probably better odds then the Lottery though to be fair especially there cash prizes.

Like others I have seen a few anecdotes of people winning these competitions multiple times...I have to wonder how much they are spending on entering them in order to do so though...must be in the £thousands?

I won 3 Rolex's xmas eve and the Mrs won a G wagon beginning of June. Cash alt was 90k WBAC just transferred £107k this afternoon for it.
The reason most have a low cash alt is because they want you to take the prize.. Its no good for social media content if you take the cash.
So thats about £180k in 12 months. Vs about £4k from the lottery in 30 years..

Elite Comps

Don't know anyone who has won a car that I recall, but a couple of people who've won the secondary prizes like £1K or whatever it was on BOTB.

I've spent more since winning thats for sure. Probably only spent a few hundred in the 6 months before winning, But I bet its a couple of thousand since winning. However I usually load up when elite do a 100% back on store credit, So whatever you pay you essentially get your money back in credit. The Mrs winning the G63 was good.. It was a draw for the house with a monthly free car draw. So £40 on tickets for the house and a free entry to win the car...So a free G63

What competition did you do on Elite comps the live draws or the Instawin?

I just looked on one competition site, picked a random ticket list and a random name off the first page. That particular individual bought 170 tickets so about £65 in that instance on one competition.

I'd be a hypocrite to criticise people for gambling on these things as I did the National Lottery for about 10 years straight but some people go in heavy on these competitions.

I guess it's fine if you can afford it and don't go chasing losses.

Unrelated but I remember being behind a guy in a US petrol station. He didn't look particularly well off so I was pretty surprised when he dropped $370 on scratch cards. Seems that is a fairly common occurrence

I keep being tempted to enter revcomps when they have a car i like, usually a defender or porsche. It would probably make more sense just doing it once a year but with more tickets, giving me much better odds than the odd couple each time. Still, better odds than lottery though.

Guy at our work won an E36 M3 from one and he took cash alternative. When he told me I was like should have took car and I’d have given you an extra grand on the cash alternative.

Guy on here I believe has won twice @GhostWKD I think and took the cars.

I’ve won nothing it’s a cheeky gamble but I only enter competitions for cars I’d keep if I won. :)

I live on the same road as the owner of one of these competition sites.... Let's just say the phrase "the house always wins" clearly applies to these online competitions as well.
Pretty straightforward business model and I don’t see any issue with it.

Buy car for £20k
Sell £25k worth of tickets
One winner gets £20k car
Raffle company pockets £5k

It would be a pretty stupid business if they were losing money.

Vastly better odds of actually winning anything than the lottery.

Had one of these the other day at our local Tesco, dude blew £120 on scratch cards in one shot. And I don't think it was for an event or anything either as he stood there literally choosing each scratch card one by one, much to the frustration of everyone behind him. When I walked out he was sat in an old Citroen Berlingo scratching them off.

Usually not. Often there are no other prizes but the jackpot. On the lottery you're much more likely to get your money back or a small prize.

Lottery is the only gambling I'd ever consider. I say consider. As it's still house always wins. Because all these omaze/car ones are just a tax on the desperate

DCGs app free entry ticket comp today is to win max entries to win a Porsche GT3. Free, sure I will take a punt.

I have won £1500 cash, a steam deck, some mouse mats and NVME drives on a different site, not a car one. I enter a few quid a week and set limits on both sites so I can never get silly with it. Car ones I usually enter for somehting that will fit down my drive (not any top end cars sadly) or campervans as that is my dream to win one of them and drive around in it with the kids.

I’ve done it a few times, but never won!

The odds on some are high but at least worth a raffle you have a ticket in the draw.

The cash alt is always appealing

I didn't say there was an issue with it and as you say, it is pretty much business 101 - buy product, ensure you get more for the product that you paid for it.

Some (maybe all, I haven't checked) are also incredibly open about the details of the draw with every ticket listed out to view after the event so you can even calculate how much they made (gross) on that particular prize.

The point I was making is that you are funding the lavish lifestyle of some dude behind a flashy website and the vast majority of people will get Jack in return.

EDIT - lets also be clear on the numbers, these guys aren't getting out of bed for £5k profit on a £20k prize. I just looked up the entry list on a £2500 cash prize, the ticket income was pennies short of £4k. £25k cash prize = £36k of tickets. I'd expect the gross margins on the cars to be higher due to the additional costs involved with an actual prize rather than a bank transfer.

EDIT 2 - I've taken a small sample size but about 60% gross seems to be the margin on the cars (third edit because I can't do maths :o ).

Never won, have had a dabble here and there but we are talking a few pound at a time.

I typically go for cars I'd be able to afford to own which are your older Skylines, M3s etc. Cars I've lusted after for years but always been behind the curve on buying.

You've seen Gibbo's garage right? :P

I don't see what the issue is personally, you could start passing all sorts of judgement on any business and whether their margins represents value or not.

Why don't people just do the lottery?
Is it because lottery is just a number and these competitions are something real and there's some psychology behind it?

Your chances of winning something significant are vastly better on these raffles versus the lottery.
