JDM Import guide/walk through

Should be £360 yeah, one of the benefits of imports most of the time
Only downside is it goes up every year!

Anyway not sure the Volvo would be worth it, the imports seem to be around £12k and UK prices are around £6k, better to take the hit on the VED in this instance!

Not that many at that age.

Got one sold, grade 4.5 which is excellent. About 40k miles. Coming in at 880000yen.

That's about £4.5k
Plus shipping, fees etc, maybe another £2k
Then Vat and duty, so another £2k

Just ballpark, but about £8.5k

I guess Volvo is not Japanese as such so slightly higher price anyway. I wasn't looking for an import specifically, but I've even seen BMWs etc that have been imported. I guess some sellers or importers sometimes find a niche in the market

Maybe it's been mentioned before but the following is good to get a ballpark figure etc

Goonet is great for info, specs etc

Basically Japanese autotrader.co.uk. It's of course much more expensive than auctions though

Yeah, you see quite a lot of VW's, Mercedes, BMW etc imports. Sometimes better spec or condition but not always

Just a short update. MOT in hand so I can now do the paperwork. This was probably the most daunting part for me at the start but now its just so simple, usual story when you get used to something.

So, you print off the V55/5 and it has a PDF guide document that looks lengthy but 90% doesn't apply to vehicles over 10 years old.

I'll complete the V55/5 along with providing the following:

1. Copy of driving license, both sides
2. Copy of a utility bill within the last 3 months
3. Original Export Certificate
4. Translated version of the above
5. Cheque with Tax plus the application fee of £55
6. Copy of the MOT

One thing to note is, and I fell for this, is to be cautious when applying during the changeover in tax charges in April. DVLA are usually slow to release costs and even if £1 out, will decline the application. No issue here as we're well into the year so its £55 + £360 for a full year. If under 1549cc then tax would be £220 for the year.

You dont need insurance, thats only for NI. I always add more than I need, so in this case I will also send a copy of my passport and an additional utility bill. I find this to be a safer process to follow and have not had any issues in 20 odd years other than the tax crossover mentioned above. I also throw in a copy of the NOVA letter proving it was paid, although Im pretty sure all they do is check the chassis number on their systems.

So to be clear, what I send is:

1. Copy of driving license, both sides
2. 2 Copies of a utility bill within the last 3 months
3. Original Export Certificate
4. Translated version of the above
5. Cheque with Tax plus the application fee of £55 (£415)
6. Copy of the MOT
7. NOVA letter showing fees paid
8. Copy of my passport

Just print these all off along with the V55/5 and send it recorded to the usual DVLA address. I do have the exact department details but thats not normal process to follow. I sometimes send a nice covering letter if I'm in the mood but it shouldnt matter as your phone number and email is added to the V55/5 anyway.

Just to give an idea of the form, its easy to see online but its two pages covering about 80 boxes to fill along with the usual names and addresses.

However, on doing the form, only 20 to 25 of the boxes are needed for cars over 10 years old, so not much to it. Takes me about 10 minutes to do the form now.
