whats wrong with passport or driving license that's photo ID
Neither is mandatory for people in the UK. In fact, I think you can still keep a valid paper license (the green paper one), which has no bioetrics or photo.

All ID cards I have seen (mainly physical) have photos that need renewing every 10 years and some biometric data (mine has fingerprints I think).

Driving licenses got updated something like ~15 years ago, to include a photo card.

Can't we simply do something similar with National Insurance cards?

The only way this works is if it's mandatory, which I don't support. Otherwise, it's pointless.

The dark economy still exists, they won't care. The issue with food delivery is once they have an account, any driver can turn up using the account. It's not going to change anything.

That would make more sense (just linking a Photo to NI) and would have less backlash by branding it as "National Insurance+" or something

It's the sort of policy that if Reform announced it, would be welcomed by their supporters

Because Labour have done it there's a petition not to go ahead with it.

I think there's a good chance a lot of the opposition Reform are whipping up for this is rooted in a fear that it might actually do something to start tackling 'the immigration problem' and if people start to believe that problem is being solved, their support will collapse because the rest of their policies are vacuous nonsense.

True, then they will have to find another 'other' to blame for everyone's issues.

It's the millionaire with his cookies analogy, over and over

It won't solve the probelm of people working illegally in this country.

Some in Reform are idiots, but they aren't that stupid.

To release the latest attempt with the guise of reducing illegal immigration is just desperately sad.
I genuinely feel bad for Labour that that's the fake route they took. It is much better to just say its a step to unifying and simplifying the system.
Now he should launch electoral reform and reform the British tax system too.... that would be an ultra courageous step to do before being annihilated in the next election, before WW3. :P

What are they trying to solve with this initiative?

If it's do to with illegal immigration etc, then why not try to address the root cause?

Even though I am just about with the idea, I also can see the points people are making..

I tell you from my perspective, the issue with Starmer is he literally instructed the judicial system to remove certain rights from people he openly deemed 'far right', specifically he addressed the nation and said they'd not be allowed bail and put instantly on remand, this is precisely what happened to Lucy Connolly and precisely why she ended up pleading guilty. The consensus of legal advice now is had she have gone to trial she'd have won.

On top of that we have politicians openly calling their rivals 'fascists' and a continued assault from politicians on the public and their rivals with smears of 'far right' and 'fascist' and all manner of illegitimate slurs..

So it's fairly obvious to see why people specifically should not trust Starmer, based on his actions..

Not forgetting that Labour also amended the OSA to suddenly include harmful content to Adults and smeared anyone against it as supporting child abuse..

The direction of travel of labour in terms of free speech / government overreach is pretty appalling, people have every right to be wary..

Even the reason they are now pushing for digital ID is infantile.. we already have mandatory requirements for all employers to ensure all employees have a legal right to work in the UK, this is obviously circumvented by some illegal migrants in ways that a Digital ID would not stop..

Starmer says he'd smash the gangs and it was laughably futile.. now we are to believe Digital ID would in anyway work?

The majority of Illegal (boat) migrants already get food, spending money, phones and healthcare.. so again.. who is this aimed at?

I still see that potentially Digital IDs could be very useful and convenient and in many ways I support them, but to pretend all is rosy and in no way are our rights already been demonstrably eroded is quite frankly delusional..

I would now go and put my bacofoil hat on, but the supermarket shelves have just been emptied..
