That potential already exists though.
What if suddenly government decided you needed your passport to get on a train? Absurd, but how much more absurd than what you're asserting?

No, not in the same way. A DIGITAL ID, with enough data points (over time things will be added, why wouldn't they?), can be used to collect, track and predict behaviour. It can then be used to only give access to services to those that meet requirements that are currently unknown. It's the potential - how the data is used by the state, how the data will be used when it's stolen (it will), how will it be used to coerce behaviour etc.

Yes, you are right that suddenly the government could do anything it wants currently (see covid), but your example of a passport, all the data you are giving in that example is your citizenship, identity, age, sex, where you've been in the past. It then does not collated that ditigally with all other data points in a centralised way. Security and privacy through fragmentation.

It is already illegal to employ people in this country. This is not needed.

You could just call it a National Insurance card, rather than the proposed cringeworthy "BritCard."

The driving license didn't change its name when modernised.
At least the driving license actually says what it's for...
National Insurance doesn't. It doesn't cover my car insurance, my household insurance, my medical insurance... it's actually a tax identifier.
ID card should be ID card. I agree, silly names like BritCard are just nuts.

It's going to blast past a million today. I was happy to give Labour a chance this time, after the disaster of the Tories. But never again.

They don't give a crap about these petitions. They do what they want no matter what we vote for.

A National Insurance number covers your national insurance, not your personal insurance.

Lets face it, all you're doing is presenting the slippery slope argument and you dont like being called on it.

Well it is, there's no safeguards being presented to show it won't be. Do you REALLY trust the state to this level? If you do, then there isn't much I can say to convince you that this is a bad idea.

Whatever they say now, I have no doubt mission creep will set in and whatever this ID is will just become all consuming over time.

Tin foil hat concepts don’t really seem ridiculous as they used to seem 20yr ago.

all of a sudden this is the only solution to immigration ? Like really how convenient this is the answer. Amazing.

Why does immigration need a solution?
Skills coming into the country are a good thing.

When they merge NI with Income tax you wont need an NI card any more. Then the digital ID can take over the purpose of ID for tax purposes, and all other purposes. If you want a more realistic use of these IDs rather than the 'OMG they want to restrict your life!!!!'

Anyone who thinks this is being implemented to tackle illegal immigration is a moron. It is about total control and censorship. The countries that have this system in place are authoritarian with the exception of South Korea and maybe Bosnia (China, Afghanistan, Singapore etc.).

The only way this would help solve the illegal workers problem is if we were a no cash society. This will be the next step however and they will try their best to get rid of cash so as to gain even further control.

Look at the record of this government so far. People’s wealth is being stolen through every single tax mechanism they can think of. Despite campaigning not to do it, winter fuel payments stopped for OAPs who have likely paid tax and NI most of their lives whilst at the same time paying for a constant stream illegal immigrants to be housed in hotels up and down the country (with heating I assume….). We have more arrests and imprisonments for social media posts than pretty much anywhere in the world. We have someone like Lucy Connolly getting hard time for a single social media post whilst the labour councillor shouting to kill all the ‘right wing’ protestors got a slap on the wrist and the Muslim guy who came out on film attacking someone with a knife because they burnt a Koran also gets a slap on the wrist. Assault with an offensive weapon is fine… angry words on twitter bad.

There is a reason why Reform has the largest following of any party now and it isn’t because ‘they are all racist idiots.’ People have absolutely had enough of nonsense like what I have mentioned above. This government cannot be trusted. I would say the most untrustworthy government I have seen in my life time and they are now looking to gain further control with digital IDs...
