For the people who remember 3DFX

I was a tech journalist at the time and managed to get two Voodoo 2 12MB in SLI for free way back then! Went to Digital Image Design in Warrington to Interview them about F22 Air Dominance fighter (their new game) and they wheeled out gameplay showing a demo of Wargasm playing on a projector 10 feet square. Loads of tanks, infantry and APCs with attack helicopters speeding in, I was utterly dumbfounded, speechless. Obviously first priority was a rig that could play it. A week later I was playing Wargasm on my Pentium 2 350Mhz with those two Voodoo 2 bad boys and was seeing the future of tech in my Bedroom! Two years of getting whatever was the next month's new GPU for free was the gateway drug that led me here.

I had a Voodoo1 then a Voodoo2. Never had two for SLI though.
I was totally amazed when I first saw Tomb Raider and Quake running on the Voodoo1, smooth 'high res' graphics with coloured lighting, 16 bit colour. It was so much better than the pixelated, limited colour software rendered games.
SLI was something to behold I have very fond memories of those days.

my first pc back in the late 90s either 98 or 99 i had a 3dfx voodoo
not sure which model but i remember it was a voodoo and i had a p3-450 i think it was might have been the 550 but i think it was the 450
was in a desktop instead of a tower as well lol
i wasnt into computers back then i got it to download guitar tabs mostly but we never actually got the internet at home before i moved out a year or so later so kinda a bit of a mark being dumb thing really
but yeah il always have a softspot for the voodoo for this reason i think

amusingly only got into computers properly about a year or two ago with the 4770k i was using for music stuff lol and here i am on am4 with rdna 4 weird how quickly things get out o f hand with me lol
edit to add somewhere in between the big gap from the old voodoo p3 pc and the 4770k i had up until december i did have a phenom based pc briefly in 2009 no idea what gpu was in that though
bit late to the suddenly getting into it
shame i cant have a modern voodoo though lol

I can still remember when I bought a Voodoo 1, fired up Quake 2 and there was a room with a transparent screen enabled by the card, and I must have spent hours just admiring it! :p

Followed by two Voodoo 2's in SLI, good times.

My first GPU purchase was the Voodoo 3 3000 which i had to return as i discovered my PC didn’t have an AGP port, so i exchanged it for the 2000.

Quake 2 and HL never looked so good. Oh and i still have the card :D

I remember buying my first 3DFX card

I may still have mine somewhere. A 6 MB 'Pure 3D' clone of the Voodoo 1 IIRC. I had Voodoo 2000 and Voodoo 3000 AGP cards and still have - somewhere - a V5 5500. I had the opportunity to buy an 8 core professional (Obsidian?) version at some point but company ethics prevented me.

I had a rubbish ATI 2MB card in my machine and I added a 3DFX Voodoo 3 16 MB PCI add-in card and the difference was massive and has never been as big since then

Very similar to me, it was some type of ati rage integrated graphics chip with i think 4mb of ram. Upgraded to a voodoo 3 2000 pci and it was a massive difference. Just a shame the company was sunk by their management wanting stopgap products taking resources away from the rampage project constantly. :(

This was my first ever graphics card and it was amazing i can remeber some of my friends seen it and were amazed, extreme assault.mind blowing at the time formula 1 with ninja mode ..

I think that is the way a lot of us went back then - I had an ATI Rage II+ 3D or something like that with 2MB VRAM and stuck a Obsidian Voodoo 1 in and the difference was massive.

I had the original Voodoo paired a Matrox Mystique. After seeing Quake running on it, I ran out and bought one.

I also had the Voodoo 2, 3 (wasnt great if I remember rightly) and I think a 5.

S3 virge 1mb paired with a 4mb voodoo 1 was first major pc graphics setup me and my dad bought in our early days of pc building. Ridiculous graphics and ultimate race pro was mind bendingly pretty!

Have a voodoo 2 in my P1 setup, still love these cards! NFS2 special edition :D

Kudos to anyone who can keep this brands legacy alive :)

i heard about the brand it was mentioned in readme files on some games i played as a kid, i dont know the hardware i was using back then though
the brand names were: banshee, voodoo and some mention of matrox or something

The 3DFX brand had numerous manufacturers creating / selling the boards in the same way that gigabyte, Sapphire etc do now. even Creative had their shoe in with the "3DBlaster" product lines
