Death of the high street

This is Swindon town centre. It used to have a certain energy, but now it's a wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Yeah, yeah Swindon worst place ever blah blah blaaaah.
I was part of the opening team at the New Oneills in swindon.. Swore Id never go back........ 2001

So many businesses closing around here and we’re in one of the most affluent areas. What on earth have Labour done with our economy.

Liz Truss crashed the economy (and killed Queen Elizabeth II while she was at it), before being out-lasted by a lettuce from ASDA. The lettuce became our next PM, then Kier Stalin took over and continued the rot. It will become even worse when Farage wins in 2029.

I get my hair cut at OAP rates in a traditional barbers, £8 at least three times a year but never between October to March inclusive. Drives my wife mad, the shaggy dog look.

I suppose i don't support their turnover very much but the shop is always full.

I do my own now. Had to buy some clippers in covid. Now it seems wasteful to not carry on using them!

Luckily our town is pretty nice, plenty of open shops, mostly independent - a couple of great butchers, and loads of places to eat. Parking is about 70p for an hour, though there are a few tourist trap parking spots where it's £1.10 for an hour.

It's always busy, and has some nice walks near the river Stour just behind the shops, as well as a load of green space too.

Had the misfortune of going into Swindon last year, when I nipped back to visit relatives; and my goodness, I can see why it appeared on an episode of Turd Towns :D

3 times a year but never over winter? Mate...you a hedge?

Fair comment. It was just your initial one seemed to suggest there was only 1 party to blame for the state of the economy currently, which would be hugely incorrect.
Yep. The high street has been dying for about 15 years or so now, so not just a Covid thing either.

Norwich is usually busy on the weekends, and there is also a fair amount of footfall in the week too.
Marketplace, department stores, multifunctional library. Castle.
Hardware store. Restaurants and cafes. Its not on the way out.

My local high street is currently nice, with free parking and lots of independent cafes, book shops, charity shops, and decent pubs.

There are some Turkish / Kurdish barbers cropping up and I'm sure it's only a matter of time before it's plastered with bookies and they take away the free parking.

Then when it becomes infested with unpleasant people I'll call it quits.

Just been to town on the pedalo, 2 miles to sainsburys for some Bisto frozen stuff, Aldi on the way home for essentials, chicken for tea and milk chocolate magnum look a likes.
Monday is always quiet but we do have some cafe culture going on. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday are our market days which are often packed.

Support local shopping **** amazon.
People buy Magnums or Bisto frozen stuff from Amazon? I don't think I know anyone who buys groceries from Amazon, even if they do have a small selection.

You can get Morrisons deliveries through Amazon now. I've done it twice, my last lot was delivered in a taxi!

I must be about the only person who never uses Amazon. Well, like literally a few times a year. Most of the stuff on it is worse tat than Temu.

To be honest Amazon has the complete range I would not say most stuff is of any given quality bracket - if you are running into a lot of worse tat than Temu on there that is probably somewhat reflective of how you are using it.

They've recent started Amazon Haul which is mostly Temu level tat but some bargains to be had.

I don't use amazon much. It's not super competitive like it was 5 years ago.
Most of my "cheap purchases" have moved to Ali express since amazon. When it changed its prime family share feature so family members stopped getting free delivery I used it even less.

I find same. It's like a marketplace for same tat you find on ally express with a mark up

I live in a small village that has nothing much on its high-street other than a few hairdressers, a dentist, and a couple of restaurants. My nearest main town is Reading and I can count on 1 finger the amount of times I've been there in the last 12 months and the only reason for that was I'd promised my son I would take him to Osaka for sushi if he aced his SATS.
I remember being stung for £6 for parking.

The high streets are dying because less and less people actually need or want to go shopping on high streets. Not some bloody drama reflection of a crumbling society like Reform and co want you to believe.

My village/town has a thriving high street with lots of boutiques, cafes, pubs, restaurants, craft shops etc. It's also a town full of ****s driving around in Range Rover Sports whinging about the state of public services whilst claiming they can't afford a penny more income tax.
