CPU fan header error after installing new GPU

Arggghh there's always something! Help needed.

I'm currently facing a CPU fan header error when switching on my PC... if I go into the bios the temperature goes up to 88 so I guess the pump isn't working?

I have checked all the connections and I can't see any issues. The frustrating thing is this is only now happening after installing a new GPU.

Here's what happened (my system is in my sig):

  • Installed GPU
  • Connected everything back up and booted into windows normally.
  • Noticed 1 of the system fans wasn't spinning - made a mental note and moved on.
  • Did the usual with DDU and reinstalled Nvidia drivers.
  • Checked the refresh rate and it had defaulted to 60hz so I changed it to 144hz and screen went black. The TV wouldn't even respond to the remote control. Weird!
  • Turned everything off at the wall and decided to fix the fan not spinning before turning everything back on again.
  • Opened the back of the case and in 5 seconds I could see the fan cable dangling - I'd accidently pulled it out of the commander core - plugged it back in.
  • Booted up the PC.
  • Everything had power and then suddenly bam - red flashing lights and a scary symbol on the pump display - CPU fan header error, please check fan header connection etc.
  • I checked all the cables and nothing looks out of place. All fans are spinning and all lights are working.

So that's it. I'm now stuck without knowing what to do next. Could the pump have gone bad? Help :(

Been thinking about this and I'm wondering if the aio pump may have trapped air or something. Reason I suspect it is I did put the case on its side back and forth a few times whilst tinkering. Could trapped air cause a complete pump failure?

The other issues I noticed are unrelated I reckon.

Also sorry if this is a stupid question but if the LCD display is working does that mean the pump is getting power?

So after some more digging it seems the pump is definitely not working.

From the Corsair website describing the symbol on the LCD display:

The spinning impeller symbol means the Commander CORE isn't receiving tachometer output from the pump.
A red triangle warning indicates a general fault or a pump failure.

I've double checked for any loose cables and I didn't damage anything physically so at a loss as to how just by me laying the case on its side I could have caused a pump failure through air bubbles??? Anyone have any similar experience like this? The only option I have now is to RMA the aio.

You should first go over all the fan connectors on the motherboard and the commander core, unplug/plug them all back in one at a time. Perhaps you plugged that dangling cable back into the wrong port?

I’m not sure what cooler, hub you’re specifically using, but before jumping to the conclusion the pump is broken, triple check the correct cables are in the correct locations.

Triple checked all the connections. Tried different sata cable for the pump. Seems pump is dead. RMA initiated.

I’ve had 2 Corsair AIO pumps fail showing that symbol, I haven’t bought another.
Yeah I think it's common. I won't be buying from them in future. This is also my second failed aio from Corsair although the first one was less severe as was related to the LCD screen.

Have decided I'm going back to air cooled. Don't want the stress of having to rip out an aio unit every couple of years due to stupid failures like this. Need more reliability. Will flog the replacement when it comes.

Just ordered a Noctua NH-D15 - going for the industrial look now.
