Winter 2025/2026 - Cold or Mild?

The heating remains off in our household. South West London. I doubt we will get through this weekend without it being fired up. But the October milestone has been reached once more so that's good.

Similarly here in Cheshire. I have also yesterday bought an outsized hoodie (knee length) just in case this winter is going to be particularly cold.

It's been warm and looks to continue being mild for the foreseeable. Doubt the heating will be on here anytime soon.

Considering how wet most of September was, we won the lottery with our four nights at Longleat Center Parcs, back to summery weather until light drizzle on our way home today.

Wind warning for tomorrow in Hampshire at least, gists around 50mph.

I've got a long battery heated top to wear if it gets too cold. Heating going on will be an absolute last resort. I intend to channel my inner Scrooge this winter.

Tbh It's not unusual here, it's probably a good deal milder than most places in the UK.

I've been ice skating on Petersfield lake when we lived there in the sixties. I do remember some bitter winters on the motorbike. However it may be milder today.

Global warming?
The earth's warmth comes from the rays bouncing back from the surface...
The news stating longer summers due to global warming.
The only way the summer season could be extended is if the cycle and rotation had changed.

This isn’t true. The reason the Earth is warming is that greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide trap some of the heat that would normally escape into space. They re-radiate it back towards the Earth, which slows the rate of cooling and leads to overall warming.

The seasons have shifted to a bit later in the year, so the summer isn't longer, but is later.

We are sandwiched between Portsdown hill and the isle of white on the coast. Bit of a microclimate. It certainly gets colder inland.

I've got storage heaters whereby I don't have the option to just click it on for a bit of heat, has to be charging over night. Had one on most nights this week, as being out in the sticks and slightly higher up, it's been rather chilly

Yeah I'm on the other side of the hill, up in the downs, and it's often 5 or so degrees colder here than Southsea in winter, and same amount hotter in Summer.

My friend in Southsea never believes me. I have to photo my Thermapen reading outside sometimes, he won't accept that being near the sea moderates temperature extremes.

After going out in autumn cycling kit yesterday afternoon with arms and legs completely covered, it's looking like a summer kit day again in Hampshire, blue skies and 18C maximum forecast!
