Firstly I've resisted all things vr, not even had a go of my wife's quest 2, however, few things have come up lately and I'm thinking of diving in.

Initially I was going to go PS4, then figured why not go the steam route instead.

I know nothing, literally nothing, re the hardware, but it's time to have a dabble.

Budget? I don't have one.

I don't want to throw money away, but want something that won't completely put me off.

I have little issue with pre-owned - what's good value?

I would say for PCVR either a quest 3 if new or a hp reverb G2 if 2nd hand

but why would you not try the quest 2 1st? whilst both of the above are better than the quest 2, the q2 is good enough to give you a genuine taste.

if you want standalone then imo a quest 3 or a quest 3s.

a quest 2 is fine for a dabble but I wouldn't buy one now for stand alone as new stuff won't work on it.

Thanks all, you make a valid point, people are way more sensible with money around here than me :p

So all I need is a decent usbc cable by the looks of it, there recommendations on that front so I'm not messing around for an age?

you have various options with the quest 2/3 you can make it wired or use it wirelss (which is how must people will use it).
you wouldnt need a usb cable for this just the software app : VirtualDesktop.
you can move on to wired options when you know were you stand.
a a beginner Quest 3 is the route to buy, but quest 2 to try. your partner may also want to upgrade at the same time if you get on with it.

suggest sneaking a go when partner isnt around.

are you looking to play games with partner / on your own or a mixed lot?
also what titles / games / expirences are you plannning to play?

Yep as others have mentioned have a go of your wife's Q2 and if you think it's ok a Quest 3 is an ideal 1st headset and probably the best all round headset anyway at any price, the view through a Q3 is significantly nicer than a Q2 because of its lenses. Be aware you may get nauseous being new to VR, if/when u do, immediately take the headset off and rest until you feel 100% again, then try again/repeat (stop ASAP after feeling nauseous), you'll pretty quickly build up your VR legs where you won't feel off at all at anytime.

This is why I've avoided it, can't be good for your noggin!

It's not nice but if u immediately stop using the headset at the 1st signs of feeling iffy its entirely manageable and not too bad and will get less and less over time, the worst thing u can do is think u can power through it. VR itself will do u no harm long term, in fact with u and your wife both having headsets there's a lot of fun to be had for both of u in multiplayer games/apps etc.

a refurbished Quest3 is probably your best bet from there you can upgrade if you want more and sell the Quest3 on for a small loss, you need a decent PC to drive VR just warning you now

Obviously try what you are interested in but also try not to get stuck in specific genres is my advice, the number you see on social media exclusively playing rhythm, fps, VRchat, simulation is frightening try em all

if you play elite (you should it's amazing in VR just don't bother with the on foot stuff in VR)

in the settings you can fix the horizontal view in the SRV. you should do that if you are worried about vr legs.

1st person shooters like half life alyx can be incredible but are also hard on your vr legs. when ever possible do any turning yourself. (play standing up)

walking and strafing is fine on a pad but you are far better turning physically not using a stick (don't use kB / mouse)

if you have to turn with a stick i strongly suggest using snap turn until you get used to it.

of course you do you etc but what I find frustrating (not aimed at anyone here but it happens a lot) are those who say VR is rubbish and will never work ... and yet it turns out they jumped right into an extreme experience and played using a mouse and KB sitting down and ignored the vr sickness warning signs.

don't forget if you get a new quest 3/3s to get a referral on your new headset when you create your quest vr account. Given your wife already has one then it makes sense to use a referral from her.

you will both get a good chunk of store credit to buy some vr stuff..

Another recommendation for the Quest 3. They can be had on Marketplace for around £250. CEX prices are pretty steep for the Quest 3 but they do offer a 5 year warranty though.

Very still do the thing where you get 20% off anything you buy if you get their credit agreement. Wait till they've got the Q3 on sale (happens fairly regularly) then use that deal on top, and it's a very cheap way to get you into a brand new Q3 - probably significantly cheaper than you could buy one second hand.

Then just pay off the credit within the next 6 months, and you'll not pay any interest either.
