Discord security breach

I'm going to show my naivety now but why does Discord ask for age verification? I only use it on WoW raid night - what am I missing out on?

Because of the OSA. If you want to access servers/channels marked NSFW or you want to show (instead of block/blur) "mature sexual media" or "graphic media" whether that's in a server channel or a dm, you need to verify. Of course what counts as sexual media or graphic media is somehow determined by Discord (so AI I guess), so stuff can randomly get blocked. If you want to play built in games like Poker with your friends, you need to verify as well.

Not shocked it's happened, MPs were told of concerns, dismissed them all, GDPR would save us and if you were against it, you're on the side of Jimmy Savile.

TS, Vent, Mumble etc all still exist and can be set up and ran by users.

I ran my own TS server for years when I was more into online gaming, will happily go back to doing the same.

I’ve still got a TeamSpeak container running, just my mates prefer Discord.

Voice quality is far better on TS, and you don’t have to worry about them recording stuff and trawling through your data (or mismanaging it).

Alas, I was outvoted. :(

Link them the article and point out it wont be a one off, not just with Discord but I can guarantee we'll see the same happening on other sites/services.

Seems like most of the "mainstream" press haven't even picked up on this yet. Or are just choosing to ignore it (maybe at the government's request lol)

May already have happened. Not all companies report breaches, even when they are supposed to or they may not have even noticed that data has been siphoned off. Local laws also may not require it.

Also more obscure cases like an employee dipping in to data to gather information on someone may not get noticed either.

That's what happens when these regulations are made by people who still listen to the "Wireless" and are thinking of upgrading to colour TV.
