BMW and M Power Owners

Which year did BMW start putting in Carplay into their 1 series?

Musing about changing to a M135i but not sure if it's in that model or have to wait a bit more before going into the M140i but not before it changed shape to the new 2L one, want the old 3L RWD one.

Not too sure, my 68 plate M140 didn't have it from factory, but was easy to add with a wifi antenna and coding.

It's less about the specific car model/year, and more about the headunit/iDrive version.

As an aside it's been covered in the thread that it's a doddle to add this with a roadtop box. I really wouldn't go choosing a car based on it.

They’re stock on the facelift M340 cars

Which that car is not :D

It's sad they put them on the facelift, they look awful and seem be the modification of choice these days. The grey mirror caps were much nicer.

IIRC if it's an iDrive 5 or 6 NBT Evo unit, it can probably have CarPlay activated (though probably only unofficially for earlier cars - you wouldn't be able to get BMW to do it)

Did you scan it afterwards to make sure it still worked?

:D JK! It looks nice though dude!

:p i will still be hearing this joke in 2 years time :D

and cheers :) yeh im happy with it, I love the colour, and its stella when its polished and waxed.

Mate, it'll be on your OCUK tombstone

You're welcome, it's a beautiful colour mate. Yeah, it doesn't take much to make it pop does it ;) Very nice indeed :)

Just make sure you take as much time enjoying it, as you do scanning it ;)

But seriously, though, then you'll really get a kick out of it the lesser you worry...

FWIW, I maintain classic stuff, and that is like holding a grenade inside a closed fist whenever you drive them in general, let alone wring their necks, but I still just roll with it, and love every minute, and when the car lets me know that I or IT has broken something (a bit of both TBF lol), then you just fix it and take it for what it is.

TLDR: You've a nice car, don't let it stress you out, be the boss of it, not the boss of you, think of it as a posh toy :)

Can you tell by looking at it in a photo of the ad ?

I guess you need the one with the biggest screen at least?

The larger screen is what you want, that’s means the car has pro nav. BUT people can retro fit the larger screen without doing much else… so something to be cautious of.

I think for CarPlay it’s idrive 5/6 on the larger screen pronav. The smaller screen is idrive 4 which doesn’t support idrive.

Just enabled carplay on my 2017 M140i. Bought a chinese antenna from Amazon for £7 and paid £28 to someone on ebay who sends you a file you run on a laptop whilst it's connected to the OBD on the car. Enables immediately. Also included the BMW 2025 map update for free too.

And here's me paying £200 getting it through BMW Connected Services
When I ordered my car I didn't spec Enhanced Bluetooth which means even if I wanted to get extorted by BMW I couldn't as without Enhanced BT it's not an option you can add as you're missing the aerial.

This sounds like what I need on my 2019 M240i. Can you project google maps to the screen ok? I was under the impression you had to buy a whole new 3rd party screen for this.

If you have pro nav you should be OK - I can PM you link I used - it shows you how to check the NBT version to check if you can enable car play. Being a 2019 it should be fine. You can use google maps but I've been using Waze.

Mine is pretty basic spec so would be surprised if it does. I'll have a look thanks.
