Which pixel phone is good at the moment ? new or refurbished?

Hi all,

I currently own a pixel 4xl which is maybe coming to a problematic end, its been a solid phone which has been used by me for a number of years, currently on sim only.



I am looking for maybe another pixel phone, although i need to check out contract vs buying outright,


Which pixels are good and which are not at the moment ?
 
What about a pixel 8 from ebay ? either new unused or refurb ? is it worth the risk of buying from ebay ?

I have purchased refurb laptops from ebay before (last year for example)


shelling out £500 for a new handset at the moment is doable, but i would prefer not as my car needs sorting and i need to go away, its a unfront cost i could have done without at the moment.


I have just tried to do a factory reset on my 4xl and its not helped.

So i have a phone now with nothing on there which is not charging and 21% left on the battery

that's battery degradation, not uncommon with older phones
nothing to do with software, and nothing that a factory reset can solve
it's the battery physically wearing out and only a battery swap can fix it

unless you're buying from an ebay shop, you can't guarantee that the battery hasn't been trashed by the previous owner, at best...or at worst, buying a stolen phone that hasn't (yet) been blacklisted

EE were stating they were giving away

ASUS Chromebook Flip

with the pixel 9's

if they do this, they said that i could sell the ASUS Chromebook Flip to recoup some cost


although i dont know if this was on their contract or if this was a handset only deal with them, assuming that these are £250, i could re-coup some of the cost if i sell the asus chromebook?

the battery has been fine, however, the issue started a week ago, with the battery meter not working, then, today, its not charging at all.

from last week previously, the battery charge was holding very well, wasnt draining fast.



the 9a your referencing in the link above, what the "a" difference compared to a "pro" ?


£323 is a more reasonable price, however, something is telling me the "a" is a more povvy specced one.

I've been using using a 9 pro XL since it was released (it replaced a Samsung 23 ultra). it's my primary phone and it's brilliant: Does everything I want and takes amazing pictures and videos. My son has a pixel 8 pro and they're pretty much the same phone, albeit the 9 Pro XL looks and feels a bit more premium. I see some links above for one for around the £500 mark - this is an absolute steal in my opinion.

if i can find a pixel 9 pro for the £450 mark, then i may snap this up
 
I bought a new Pixel 8a from John Lewis with a 2 year guarantee for £349.00

Last phone was 7 years old :)
 
they dont do pixel 8's anymore


john lewis have a pixel 9a - which is £399.00

However - I am trying to see the main differences between the A and the pro,

i have only ever gone for pixel pro phones.


If there are no huge differences, and things like RAM, CPU, camera, etc are similar between the A and the pro, then i may go for this john lewis Pixel 9a model for £399

More than happy with my 9a, doesn't feel like I'm missing out any features with my usage.

where are you seeing a pixel 9a for £323 ?


that could be a better price, i would have to sacrifice and have 8gb ram, and some of the other bits are lower spec, but its a better price.

yeh that looks like an ok deal, never heard of voxi the vendor before. Assume its just a random retailer online for mobiles.

im just checking out the screen sizes , i have a feeling the screen is significantly smaller than the xl versions im used to.




Looking at the 4xl vs 9a screen specs


is shows the 9a having a diagnonal screen size of 6.3" compared to the same on the 4xl 6.3"



the resolution on the 4xl seels better at 1440 x 3040 vs the 9a which is 1080 x 2424

Voxi is a MVNO (eg giff gaff etc) so they sell phones with a contract.
If you buy through voxi you pay £313 and sign up for the £10/mth contract - you then cancel the contract when you receive the phone, having already paid for the first month, hence why it's £323 rather than £313

So this voxi google pixel 9a is actually with a contract?

i wouldnt want to go on another provider, i would have to use my EE phone SIM in it, so this phone needs to be unlocked

How do you know i would be able to cancel the contract that comes with the phone? and that the phone is an unlocked phone?


the voxi website clearly states that there is a 12, or 24 or 30 month contract accociated with the sale,

im speaking with a voxi chat agent now, they cannot clarify about bailing out of the contract that comes with this handset..

the agent is saying go to a vodafone store to ask about product info

It sounds like this website voxi cannot give me any sales info, which leads me to err on the side of caution of trusting them

I will try and contact vodafone, but it sound like this phone if ordered thorugh voxi or vodafone, you may not get out of the contract, and its likely the phone maybe locked to vodafone, and also come with vodafone branding on the OS possibly


i will try and ring vodafone to find out



Probably better to pay maybe £20-30 more and get it from a different retailer as there doesnt seem to be good reviews from that retailer.

Anyone used metrofone before, just spoke to them on the phone, they seem legit and professional.


also fonehouse have the same £369 deal for the pixel 9a
