EV general discussion

I've been looking at one called Egnio EV cable organiser on Amazon, seems to get good reviews with a metal bracket and plastic charger holder. Would probably be much the same result as just making your own though.
I just use a Mega Max cable holder and fit the rubber plug over the type 2 connector rather than plugging it into some kind of dock. If your cable hasn't got one they are a few quid for one that tethers to the cable.

Better IP rating and doesn't look like my wall has a semi on. Win win.

Ioniq 5 is quite bad now the dashboard is cracking like mad on every small bump it’s infuriating to say the least. Only seems to have done it since it has got colder.

The amount of rattles and creaks this car has is insane. Even my old Vauxhalls were better built than this it’s a shame as love the car otherwise. For not even 3 years old it’s put me off Hyundai again that’s for sure.

Edit - Dash noise fixed with a piece of foam between dash panel and hud surround. Seems the hud unit is catching against the surround. Called Hyundai and they are going to change the hud unit.

Always feels good when you find a rattle and fix it. Lol

Yeah I'm finding the build quality of my Ioniq 38kwh not amazing compared to the Toyota i came from.

I mean it's fine but the feel of quality of things like the door handles and buttons, especially the EPB feel like you could easily damage them if you were ham fisted, i've got a rattle in the back somewhere which i can't quite locate yet too..

Find it very hard to get a good photo of the Polestar 2. Just weird proportions all round. It's a solid bus. Quite boring and time will tell how I gel with it. I may have ordered some stick on tat for it. A spoiler lip! The arse needs it in my opinion. Still a bit confused by the range of it given the WLTP figures. Need to expedite that EV Charger at home now to plug into my GivEnergy AIO with Gateway.

I walked past a polestar 2 for sale on sunday at the local garage. I have always liked the look of them i didnt hang around to look at spec but it looked immaculate from the outside and was "only" £18k.

kind of depressing really, we paid over that just under 2 years ago for a 33kwh bmw i3. I like the i3 dont get me wrong but you get so much more EV for your money these days. doubly annoying really as it was this winter we had planned to upgrade the wifes car to something newer... until her car getting written off forced us to do it 2 years sooner.

Do the polestars come with adaptive cruise control or just the regular cruise?

Could be worse, you could have a Stellantis era Poxhall. I ordered it because it was cheap but damn, Hans and Jürgen must have been hung over when they slapped the thing together. I'm sure the boys at Ellesmere Port would have done a better job.

We have a Corsa E too and tbh it’s far less rattly than the Ioniq although it is only a few months old so there is still time. Lol

My rear rattle was the hatch fixed with a few washers on the boot stays.

Sadly build quality seems to be declining on almost everything :(

Was reading a post online recently, after looking into the poor quality lifespan of stuff like the finish on grills we've seen at work on some recent vehicles, from someone who claims to have worked for Volkswagen group saying they've watched the design changes coming in where it seems intentional they've removed protections preventing water ingress into areas which will results in corrosion so things like wiring harnesses will rot out earlier, sensitive electronics placed near heat sources, fastenings replaced with cheap plastic clips which they know full well will break quite quickly, etc. dunno how much there is to that and/or how much is intentional vs the increasing incompetence which seems to becoming the norm in so many industries but does match up with my experience lately.

Yeah, a part of the pilot pack. It’s actually a really good implementation and accelerates in good time when indicating for an overtake. In other cars they wouldn’t start making progress until the manoeuvre into the next lane is complete.

Pilot pack is required for the adaptive I believe..

Correct. Annoyingly, as it’s just cobbled together from the XC40 parts bin, all models use the same steering wheel which has the ‘distance the car in front’ selector buttons, but if you don’t have adaptive cruise they don’t do anything…

The only way of telling it has the pilot pack are the front fog lights.

I’ve got a 2022 single motor long range model that I bought in August 2023 with 19k miles on it for 32K. The market was only just starting to recover and prices were still silly, so now it’s got 50k miles on it and I’ve got a garage paying 16k for it through Carwow…

Can’t predict the market, but the depreciation has massively outweighed the fuel savings compared to what an ICE from Mercedes would have done :D

I was also, forced to do it because I wrote off the previous car…

it was a rough time for EVs back then but things have settled down a bit now. £32k gets you a lot of car now.
I so lost a .... ton on my car however I plan to ride it out . however buying one today and there are so many bargains to be had .

however a 1 year old Mercedes is also gonna lose a fair chunk of cash over years 2 and ,3 as well esp if the milage has gone up north of 30k

as a general rule I would only buy a car once it hit 3 years old. I broke this rule! (the exception being if I could get one of the sweet tax dodging deals on a new car)

does anyone have any experience of the Mercedes EQV? (the large 7 seater people carrier). I am losing my job at the end of the year and strongly considering getting a private hire licence and setting up an airport and long distance taxi hire company (or trying to work for one)
initially I will use my ipace if I do it but am thinking something a bit larger will likely generate a lot more work. I was surprised at how cheap they are (considering their size and finish ) for one 3 years old with fairly low miles on.

Don't expect to earn a lot of money doing that and it will ruin any car that you use to do it.

In any case, RSEV had one a few years ago so have a look back through their channel.

Obviously not EV but I do wonder how it works out compared to say running a 2017 VW Sharan to death - which seems to be the way many go about it.

Slightly off topic but a Merc sprinter van is what you want for that job. My mate owns a taxi airport run business and they are the default choice for most, reliable and its a Merc so people like it.

Electric cars aren’t ideal for airport runs yet according to him.

It is interesting because the Merc vans have been our most reliable workhorses and been reliable compared to many of the alternatives and I get a similar opinion asking anyone in the industry - but Googling it seems a lot more mixed opinions on that with a lot of people complaining about reliability.

And yeah turning up with a Vito or something does immediately set the tone compared to a lot of other brands from a perception point of view.
