EV general discussion

Just got back from a neighbour who has the same car, same Zappi and same iGo but his car hasn't charged up two nights on the trot.
Anyway, it took a three reboots and head scratching before I saw his iGo App was set to 40% charge :)
He swears he hasn't touched it and his wife wouldn't know how to.
Worth remembering for the future.

All set to move on from my RAV4 plug in hybrid to full electric. What a bad start.. Polestar where excellent sorting out a test drive of a P2 until they gave me single not dual motor. At the start I insisted I needed to know about getting a Towbar fitted to a used P2 for my bike rack. I explained this would be a deal breaker if not possible. Salesman said he didn’t know (despite the website indicating it can be ordered) but I needed to be certain. He agreed to call Volvo while I was on the test drive.

On my return he said Volvo will call him back and he will call me. Nothing! I called Volvo yesterday and was told they would call me back with an answer yesterday. Nothing!

Went into VW to look at and test drive an ID7 and ask same question. I was told someone would be with me and I waited 30 min despite asking reception. I loitered in the middle of the showroom in between to desk with salespeople and nothing again.

I used to enjoy the car buying process but not so far.

Have any of you P2 owners had a towbar fitted?

A friend of mine has a towbar fitted to his dual motor version.

CoPilot says:

Yes, a towbar can be fitted to a Polestar 2 (P2), including retrofit options. Both factory-installed and aftermarket solutions are available, with towing capacities up to 1,500 kg braked and 750 kg unbraked.

Towbar Options for Polestar 2

  • Factory Towbar: Available as a retractable or semi-electric option. Fully concealed when not in use and deploys easily.
  • Aftermarket Installations:
    • Detachable Swan Neck: Offered by Telford Towbars with dedicated 13-pin electrics.
    • Invisible Vertical Detachable: Premium option from eTowbars, completely hidden when removed.
    • Retrofit Experience: Users report smooth installs at Volvo dealerships, with results matching factory specs.

Specs to Know

FeatureValue
Max Towing Capacity (Braked)1,500 kg
Max Towing Capacity (Unbraked)750 kg
Max Tow Ball Pressure90 kg
Tow Ball Diameter50 mm
Electrical Connection13-pin dedicated wiring
Software Update RequiredYes, for retrofits

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Software Update: Retrofitting a towbar requires a software update to enable towing functions—usually done by a Volvo dealer.
  • Bike Racks: Towbar-mounted racks are supported, but follow Polestar’s load and usage guidelines.
  • Aesthetic Impact: Most systems are designed to preserve the sleek look of the Polestar 2 when not in use.

If you're planning to tow or mount gear for gigs or logistics, I can help benchmark the best towbar setups or locate installers near Stoke-on-Trent. Want help comparing retractable vs detachable systems for your workflow?

:) :) I like how it knows I play in a band and live in Stoke.

lol thanks. A few years ago I bought a BMW that the dealer, Google etc said would take a Towbar. I bought the car and it wasn’t possible on an M235 GC. Hence I’m wanting more assurances. I appreciate the effort!

:) I understand but what I'd do is contact the companies mentioned in it.

like with recent bike rack discussion - there is the practical yes it can be done + type correct Q - but if it is costing £1K+ would you do it. (labour/looms/bumper ..)

Well considering fitting a tow bar option from the factory in general is about £800 to over £1000 on pretty much most modern cars, then yes.

Even the cheapest aftermarket types on most modern cars will be easily £600 plus.

Im almost certain the previous owner told me they had the towbar retrofitted on my P2.

You can purchase the towbar via the Polestar shop on their website, that includes installation:

There are aftermarket tow bar kits for the Cupra Born, even though it has zero towing capacity. They are for tow bar bike racks etc and cost £450 before fitting.

Along with cheapest fitting it was £800 and that was before I even bought a bike rack. I don’t like cycling that much and only did it very rarely with my son in Summer. I can live without the memories at that cost.

The Jaecoo 5 is getting some positive feedback in price to what you get. Apparently they are knocking them out at under £300 per month (amortized) which seems very competitive.
Also didn't realize they now have 80+ dealers in the UK, they must be buying 1 or 2 per week to have those sorts of numbers.
