I remember reading the judges summing up of this case, and it honestly made my blood run cold, one of the worst crimes I’d ever read about.

I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it because he does, but I'll never get how people conclude that a quick death is somehow more justice than spending decades rotting in a prison (preferably until their expire of old age).

I can sort of understand if his life was a living hell in an American Supermax, but here, no.
So, I'm glad he's dead, I hope it wasn't too quick, and I really really hope it hurt.

I thought this too but he was going to be given parole after 20 years. He had already served 13 so knowing our system he could have gotten early parole.

At least he served some time and came to a horrible end.

Indeed, he would have been eligible for parole now I think if they deemed he wasn't still a risk.

Wouldn't he need to serve 2/3 of his prison term before being eligible?

Watkins was sentenced to 29 years in prison with a further six years on licence, but he will be eligible for parole after serving two thirds of the prison term.

Makes sense, and to be fair, that quote I posted was from a 2013 BBC news article anyway, so wouldn't be surprised if it's changed since then.

IIRC it only applies to relatively minor crimes, not sexual assault especially against children.

Looking at the sentencing remarks in this case it looks like the Judge had already applied the 40% discount for an early/pre trial guilty plea, and the total after that was 35 years as the judge did some of the sentencing as consecutive rather than the more normal concurrent ones.

I suspect because of what he did and having read some of the judges remarks that Watkins would possibly have never got normal parole, or at least it wouldn't have been until around 2034 that he may have been eligible under the 60 rule for parole if they thought he was not a threat any more (but given the remarks and the pysch reports, I doubt they'd have considered him no longer a threat then).
