Higher Hz screen causing GPU temp increase?

Hey guys,

Just finished setting up a new smaller monitor as I was having an issue with my widescreen, so went for a 27" 1440p 300Hz monitor.

My GPU usage while doing the basic stuff, is a few degrees higher (nothing major) than the 144Hz widescreen I had previously, can the jump up in monitor Hz cause the GPU to work a little harder or is it placebo for me?

Higher resolution and or refresh rates can result in the GPU staying at a higher power state yes - 300Hz probably means it can't enter the lowest power state and still drive the monitor.

Thanks mate! It’s sitting around 35-37c doing the basics, so, not too bad!

worth asking this
is this just one monitor?
a few people [myself very much included] have noticed some gpus when you have 2 monitors with different refresh rates it seems to pin the vram to almost max speed which obviously causes the vram to get rather warm lol
probably not whats happening to yours but worth mentioning nontheless

That doesn't sound ideal :P I wasn't even aware that this was a thing, but TBF, I only use a single monitor, because I'm a peasant :D

mine is mostly because although all 3 monitors are practicaly identical matches my gpu has 2 hdmi and 2 dp and my screens have completely different refresh rates available on hdmi and display port
although tbf i only eventually caught onto it when a couple of posts i read kinda clicked and when i was messing about with fan curves etc i noticed and when i had only read some comments about the differing refresh rates like a day or two before the penny kinda dropped
some of this might be alleviated by me buying better cables but i decided buy a 6500xt instead and run the seperat sometimes used 3rd screen off of that lol
the multiple monitor thing is kinda a it works for some not for others i know people who do the same things on their computer and they would far prefer one slightly nicer screen and work a different way
for some reason i prefer having seperate screens for different parts of a song im working on and i like one in portrait its usefull for certain things
this is mostly a non issue was just worth asking out of interest lol
its not a big issue on mine i kinda just used it as an excuse to buy another gpu, then a few days later i found out about the lossless scaling dual gpu thing and noticed that id actually bought the ideal candidate lol
wow that essay i just wrote could easily have been a sentence or two at most if i wasnt so useless at putting sentences together lol

It is very common unfortunately, for some cards that happens even when they have the same refresh rate, or just any monitor above 60 Hz. AMD's RX 7000 was notorious for it on release (clicky), could use 80+ watts at idle in multimonitor mode.

The moral of this story, is to not have a goon cave ;) Or just watch 1 video at a time, you sicko ;) :P

Is it a Tie-Fighter setup, if not you best amend it to be :D

Ah sound production, now you're talking! Nice!
Your GPU sounds like it loves you :P

Indeed, but look on the brightside, think of the lack of paragraphs - that alone has increased your return key's lifespan ;) :D

Crazy! Well I've learnt something new at least :)

yeah mine with the 2 completely matching screens both on display port my gpu [this is at idle well idle ive got a yt video on one and im browsing this forum on the other and a few other tabs open but not doing anything to ask the gpu to do much]
shes using 20-25 ish watts
then if i turn the other screen on [on hdmi] it shoots up to upper 60s sometimes touching 70 watts
ok not a huge issue as such in of itselfBUT still not ideal and the gpu im going to be using to get around this issue allegedly using single digits to do what il be doing and apparantly up to about 60w when id be using it for the lossless scaling dual gpu experiments
so in other words actually using a second gpu for that 3rd monitor is going to use less power than using hte one gpu with the vram pinned lol
obviousyl i mean purely when im just browsing or not doing much that asks the 2 gpus to do much that would up the power consumption
you know what i mean lol itl actually use less power when im not doing a lot weirdly lol
saying that im guessing 16gb of vram being run hard uses more than the other gpu at idle i guess that does make sense the other gpu im going to use is practically a laptop part lol

Nice, oh, not nice, lol. But I get your point, in an idle world, you'd want them to go up in similiar increments, not a pike like that.

Yeah, i get you mate :) that's pretty mad when you think about it versus the single monitor, under minor load use cases.
Haha, it's a loose loose whichever way you look at it I spose! :D :P

Crazy! Well I've learnt something new at least :)
i go through keyboards like its going out of fashion mostly due to stupid accidents mostly involving spilt drinks or dropping other things on them
so a few months back i bought a box of ten matching keyboards with the joke that i could keep a spare hanging on a hook on the side of my desk and when i break a keyboard throw it over my shoulder lean over and reload [ie plug the new one in] almost like its a quick swap thing
well it was meant to be a joke
this was i think february time
i have the last one on my desk and its now 2 days in lol
i did most of them in in one week i seem to be fine on a keyboard for a few months then il somehow knock energy drink on 3 in the course of a few days
this time it was the dogs fault but i had 3 left this time last week LOL!
ive got my screens as well ive got a pair of ultra wide i think the term is 3440x1440 they are just 34" curved and hte third one is the not widescreen 27" version of the same screen samsung g5 oddysey i think the model is
i did have a second matching 27 also in portrait on the other side so like a head with two flappy ears
that 4th one lasted a few days before i somehow managed to stand on it when changing over to my nice new music production desk completely forgot the 4th screen was on the floor walked in and damn lol
literally had it a few days not even sure if i even powerewd it up before i killed it
yeah im accident prone and so it seems is anyone who ever seems to go near my rig lol
entirely my own stupidity this

i literally only use the 3rd one ocassionally mostly when someone sends me a picture they have taken of somethign theyv been working on and its in portrat or a friend is writting a graphic novel so when he sends me his latest bit hes added i find hte portrait monitor for reading stuff like that
i could live without it tbf lol
yeah im a bit stupid really lol

also massive appologies to the op i have dragged this a bit off topic lol sorry
i should shut up until we at least get your problem sorted then i can derail the thread not before mark

Haha RIP!

Drinks have to be strategically placed, and a risk assessment done before going near anything. I have mine on the opposite side to the PC, and the monitor is wall mounted, so all I can spill it on is the keyboard or carpet :P

Haha, what have you been dropping on your keyboard, bricks, pint glasses, bottles of booze, a casual roast dinner, a box of chicken, a frozen chicken, a leg of lamb, a graphics card, or maybe a monitor? Push the boat out I say!

Jesus, talk about 'be careful what you wish for!'
I like your style though, just chuck it over your shoulder and then later forget that it's on the floor, broken, key caps everywhere, then step on said loose key capss like a shark on a lego and scream the house down!

iu

It sounds like you have enough energy to not need to any cans of it, mate ;) :D

Haha Tie-Fighter FTW!
STAND ON IT? amazing! I did genuinely laugh rather loudly just then :P

Have you seen the movie "Good Luck Chuck"?
It has Jessica Alba in her prime, so of course, you will now watch it for research in your goon cave ;)

Anyway, you sound like her in that film, she's majorly accident prone, it's ******* hilarious, give it a watch!

yeah im incredibly accident prone
which is made worse by having no excuses i dont drink or do sdrugs or anything these days
well caffein and its often energy drink that gets spilled
im super super carefull since i got my new pc case which has no real top to it if i knock the drink over with the headstock of the guitar thats going straight through the open top of the pc case straight into the innards lol
il give that a watch sounds hilarious lol
actually worst part of all this is my machine is in the lounge at my gf place so its in a supposedly safer place than my place but somehow i still manage to do utterly dumb things
the treading on a screen thing was a bit of a howler lol
il get on that film tomorrow i need something less dangerous to do on a sunday
i make even something as basic as setting up a monitor into a dangerous action sport of some kind lol
stabbing stuff accidentaly with the guitar headstock happens rather often im afraid once i put hte pc on the desk im going to put it straight through the glass side lol
anyway i really need to stop derailing stuff like this lol

Aww bless you mate!
Just tell everyone that you do take gear and drink then  Then zero accountability :P

Jesus, that sounds lethal, lol, be careful!

Yeah it's a rather amusing film from years back, some pretty funny parts, I quite liked Dane Cook back then, this was one of the good ones, along with Employee Of The Month, and My Best Friends Girl. MBFG is the best out of the 3 :D
Hopefully you enjoy it :)

:) Does your GF witness you stacking it randomly into stuff when at hers and breaking things
Bless, she probably thinks it's cute :P

Haha, you really need to setup CCTV and put together a compilation of your best fails - I'd watch that ;)

It's a Saturday night, I'm sure @Zeebedy will forgive us, or you at least, based on your hilarious recollections :)

yeah shes well and truely use to my endless epic failathon
weve been joking for years i should have a camera on me at all times i could make a tv show out of just me trying to do really simple normal everyday things and you can garantee it will be a catalogue of epic utter total fails
i did use to get wasted constantly i guess thats how i learnt to fail so hard now i got so good at it i dont need the drink ive learnt to do it without assistance
i could literally write books about how incredibly stupid i am at times
another classic epic fail many years ago

fixing a now ex's sink
took the u bend off put a bowl underneath
all good
finished fixing it
emptied the bowl down the sink
just as i did it i realised i hadnt replaced the u bend
this after about an hour of amazingly carefully not spilling a drop of water
and then just emptying the whole lot onto me legs and hte floor lol
ive fallen over the bollard in the carpark at hers [in full view of the cctv] on several occasions im going to ask for a complilation video of me tripping over that thing lol

Ha, she sounds like a keeper mate, and gets you to a T! Fair play to you both :)
I'd definitely pay to watch that fail footage though :D

 Well on the plus side, think of the money you're now saving not having to pay to get wrecked to do such antics :P

LOL, at least you had a go though, and realised eventually what the problem was
Jesus, you must be lethal when there's ice/snow etc, or in the wind/rain :D

I love that you don't let it get to you though, I'm kinda of a similiar mindset, but when it comes to bad luck. You just have to own it and have a laugh, best way to be!

yeah my luck is also terrible
i have no real choice but to laugh at it i use to get down about it but now ahhhh well im still alive
theres a lot of people who cant say the same [well they cant say anythign............ ] so yeah what cant kill us can only make us laugh
and cry at the same time lol
