Golf Thread

A friend played Trump's new course at Newburgh (Aberdeenshire) recently. He pronounced it very good and that it will look even better in a few years once the trees have grown a bit. He also said that a round costs £450  if you're not a member. He also said that both Trump's Scottish clubs are now profitable.

I had to give golf up. Over time my swing was getting shorter and shorter. My drives were getting shorter. I noticed I was having to go up 2 irons to get the same distances. And I was in so much pain for about 3 or 4 days after a round. I couldn't walk a whole round so had to hire buggies which worked out too expensive. Shame but it is what it is.
Sorry to hear that mate, must be difficult to have to hang the clubs up :(

Strange round today.

Lost a ball at the 1st and put one in the water at the 2nd....

After that played fairly well.

Pair of 2's on the par 3 14th and par 3 17th made the card look ok for a gross 77/net 70 and 35 points.

That's birdies 61 and 62 for the year.

Probably last time clubs will be out before Spain trip on Friday - can't wait - 5 days golf in spain.... buzzing.

A mixed 76 today

5 over par front 9 with a bogey, bogey, double bogeys start and then a triple bogey on 9 after putting my tee shot OB

Turned that around on the back 9 with a hole out eagle on 16, then another birdie on 17 and almost made another on 18, but shot 1 under par on the back 9

If I had played the front as well as the back, it had the potential for a round under par

Just for laughs we decided to see what the better ball score would be for the round, and between the 4 of us we shot 64(-8)

As majority in here will be more experienced than me.... I get the idea of normal scoring but when i see tournaments with stableford, best ball/better ball, scramble and then made more complicated by talking about % of handicap i get so confused. I get stableford scoring if we were all on scratch but i very much doubt i'd be able to figure it out as we go along! Is the norm just to put the scores down and figure out the stableford scoring at the end in the bar in slow time?
Who works out the % of handicap bit?

Kinda hoping we don't need to figure a lot of this out and the computer does it for if we put scores in?

Lastly i don't know anyone at my club so would you normally just tag on to any spare slot where there's 3 out to make it a 4? Pick a completely empty slot and let others join? Should i be checking handicaps of those in the groups and just picking someone near me? I think a scratch golfer for example would get miffed being paired with a hacker. I suspect i'm overthinking

I'm talking from Scottish Golf and my club's way of doing things so it may differ slightly with you and your club etc.

However, no matter whether it's stableford or medal score etc - I simply input my gross score on the hole into the SGU app as I go around the course... Nothing more complicated than that... The system then works it works it out for me.

Yesterday was a stableford for us, off the yellow tees (front) - I don't need to do anything other than create my scorecard in the app, which the system is already setup to know the tees on the day - and then input my score as I go.

That's it.

Regards joining others - yeah - just stick your name down with people or contact club secretary and ask if there are any groups that play around your normal time etc. Also enter singles comps / scrambles etc - that's how you get to meet people. I wouldn't worry about handicaps too much - Our group is all the way from 5 to 30 handicaps between us all.

After a bit of a highlight on Wednesday it seems to have continued, good times \o/

Played my local yesterday, just a fun 18 holes but put a card in and shot an 87, which is decent around there so good times there.

Today was supposed to be a society day in Shrivenham but as I'm trundling along the M4 I start getting messages that there's no booking so that's rescheduled for next week and I then turned around and drove all the way back to Bristol where my mates were playing and tagged along with them, shot an 84 there so yet more good times :D Actually started terribly too, +7 through 3 holes  then +13 through 18 somehow :p

Similar to Booyaka above you can generally just put in your gross score and it'll be worked out either via an app or at the end, don't worry about it. Also you'll probably pick it up pretty quickly too :)

My club we don't use the MyEG app but they have a computer/terminal thing in the clubhouse so before a comp we 'register' in that and it gives the playing handicap (e.g. the % bit you mention), so I put that on the physical scorecard and then at the end you enter the scores into the terminal again and it works it all out based off gross scores. Now I've been doing it a while I generally do work out stableford as we go for myself and the guy I'm marking but there's no need.

And finally with meeting people I generally prefer to only add on to people I know, ask your club as sometimes they have a 'buddy' system and also I found roll-ups really useful if your club does it, met a bunch of members and now feel like I know them well enough to tag along if I see their names on the tee sheet around when I want to play :)

Anybody know if there's an app thats free to track ball distance? Been down the field with the kids and they're hitting it a good few yards but I can't judge it that well, from the Goal line on the football pitch to just over half way line.. I'd love to be able to track it

After the good round yesterday, you know what I am going to say about the one today........

Started with a tap in birdie after hitting a wedge to about a foot, got up and down out of the bunker on 2 for another par and thought it might be a good day again

Oh no, straight back to earth with a bump following losing a ball off the tee on 3 and walking off with a triple. Rallied for the rest of the front 9 and managed a 39, but a few loose shots on the back 9 meant a couple doubles and finished with 41 for a round of 80 and 34 points

One positive to take from the round was my wedges were throwing darts today and they saved me on a few holes with probably half a dozen putts that were no more than about 5ft in combined length

After the eagle , birdie, par finish yesterday, I went bogey, double, par today frustratingly

Where you off to? Tempted to book a golf holiday for next year at some point.

We're (me, girlfriend, and my parents) are away to Fuengirola tomorrow and been tempted to ditch them for a couple of early morning rounds if I can arrange club hire out there! :D

Staying in Benalmadena

Playing Calanova straight off the plane in a scramble. (old men versus the young team)

Then 4 championship days over

La Cala Europa
Rio Real
Torrequbrada
Guadalhorce

Not played Calanova or Rio Real. Enjoyed Europa last year, thought it was the better of the courses at La Cala, Torrequbrada is fun course, looking forward to playing it second time round as I would certainly know it better. Loved Guadalhorce - Just a proper golf course...

Not cheapest options in terms of golf, but that's not really the point of the trip - Don't mind spending some money to enjoy a nice 5 days....

Birdie #29 of the year on Saturday which rather neatly summed up my game at the moment. 15th hole, short par three, hit an 8i to just inside 5ft which ended up bagging me the pin. Missed the putt on the high side :( Next hole short par four, approach is pin high right but just in the fringe. Sink the putt from 10-12ft as it has just enough pace to drop in from the high side of the hole :p

Went out by myself yesterday. Planned to get there in plenty of time so I could spend some time on the putting green, didn't pan out and went to put on a very mixed display. On the plus side it was still light after I'd finished the round so was able to get in the practice I should have done beforehand. Really need to maximize my practice time so I can nail down a consistent tempo.

Another session at the driving range for me and the kids this evening and we're actually really enjoying it so far, we will be having lessons once payday gets here but they've progressed a lot in the couple of weeks they've started... Hitting the ball more often instead of spinning in circles on the spot :p I've managed to start hitting the 7 iron around 110-120 yards, seem to go off to the left often though

Anyone got any golf holiday recommendations..

I would like the unicorn, amazing course, sunny and cheap but I appreciate the impossibility. So maybe something so worth the money that I splash out.

Is the Turkey course a treat worth paying for or are there hidden gems that offer the same for less??

Nipped out for 4 holes after work, 2 pars and a 2 bogeys quite happy with that. Iron striking is quickly becoming more consistent, similar to how it used to be really which is a little low flighted.
Played windermere at the weekend, wasn't taking it too seriously so i 'went for it' a few times when i should have played to my ability. On the upside i submitted the score and my handicap went from 22 to 23 after the round so winner!

Dundonald Links today - cold but no breeze at all - Course in excellent condition for mid October.

Great game with some mates ahead of Spain on Friday - 2 more birdies today for the annual count (63&64)

Get packed up now for early flight out and some warm weather golf - Can't wait.

You can do cheap in Spain - cheaper hotels/apartments, cheaper courses etc but 8 of us going on Friday don't do it cheap - away for 5 days, I want to enjoy it, nice course, buggies, beers, nice food and wine at night and a decent hotel.

All top tier golf course so you can be cheaper for sure but work hard all year - nice to be nice to yourself sometimes....

Turkey used to be cheap and good but it's crept up now and it's basically a full day travel each way to Turkey.

We land in Spain after 2.5 hour flight and minibus straight to the course and play in the afternoon.
