Classic car exemption removal

Anyone seen the vids and articles about this where cars over 40 will be no longer tax exempt?
Looks like this could impact those who consider keeping old cars on the road to sort or scrap them.
 
where are they getting the £107mil from?! that would mean there are 400k plus 40yr old cars on the road all year round assuming they have a duty of £250 (number plucked from the sky) a year?! if this did happen i suspect most would simply pay duty for the few months they are used. the gains really would be minimal.

edit - just read the article above, claiming 340k owners, thats rather ambitious assuming all those owners will tax all year round...

Says a lot when they are hunting down the back of the sofa for spare change, that said the only way out of the current situation really is broadly raising taxes and/or new taxes across the board but I'd have to be convinced the money was actually being used constructively and not disappearing into a black hole of vanity projects and varying degrees of corruption with nothing changing. And especially not spent on things like OSA and digital IDs, etc. when there is so much else that is pressingly needing that cash and attention.

Reeves just isn't qualified for the job. But big tax hikes are always a Labour thing. Always have to weather it until they inevitably get voted out and then stay out for a further decade+

An MOT on very old cars would be a nightmare, but there should be a check for basic things which are actually dangerous.

I get my tax exempt classic's MOT every two years just so another set of eyes has passed over the car for safety reasons.
They have no catalyst, are modified and will make you cry on a cold start, they pass emissions test just fine as the MOT criteria emissions wise for older cars is different. :)

I don't agree with tax, owners who keep a classic running should be awarded with free tax, it is all too easy to let it be scrapped causing more pollution and to then buy a newer vehicle causing yet more pollution, but cannot complain too much as UK does get a real easy ride when it comes to car taxation and what we generally pay compared to other countries.

A lot of owners with classic cars keep them running mechanically spot on, as said owners tend to do all work themselves as most garages will not look at them or don't have a clue.

People enjoy seeing classics on the road, I certainly do, makes people smile, such a move would certainly see them on the roads less and it really is penny pinching by labour.

My dad as a couple of classic vehicles, he'll just choose which one he wants to drive for a bit and SORN the rest, i'd imagine very little actual revenue will be generated as everyone will just tax them for a couple of months in the summer then SORN them again. Surely the administration overhead of people doing that will offset some of the little tax they'll actually be gaining..

And yeah just a terrible woman, i've got some apples growing on some trees in the garden, im sure she'll be coming round to tax them soon :mad:

I think the argument is that they're used far far less than a normal car, most will probably be luck to do more than a thousand miles or so a year.

Plus it's an incentive to keep our heritage alive and working and not scrapped or sat in a shed somewhere no one can see it.

Tbh, if could swap the dross I MOT every day for 40 year old cars I’d be more than happy.
